    Monometallic interphasic synergy via nano-hetero-interfacing for hydrogen evolution in alkaline electrolytes

    Electrocatalytic synergy is a functional yet underrated concept in electrocatalysis. Often, it materializes as intermetallic interaction between different metals. We demonstrate interphasic synergy in monometallic structures is as much effective. An interphasic synergy between Ni(OH)2 and Ni-N/Ni-C phases is reported for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction that lowers the energy barriers for hydrogen adsorption-desorption and facilitates that of hydroxyl intermediates. This makes ready-to-serve Ni active sites and allocates a large amount of Ni d-states at Fermi level to promote charge redistribution from Ni(OH)2 to Ni-N/Ni-C and the co-adsorption of Hads and OHads intermediates on Ni-N/Ni-C moieties. As a result, a Ni(OH)2@Ni-N/Ni-C hetero-hierarchical nanostructure is developed, lowering the overpotentials to deliver −10 and −100 mA cm−2 in alkaline media by 102 and 113 mV, respectively, compared to monophasic Ni(OH)2 catalyst.     Children’s digital competence in early childhood education: A comparative analysis of curricula

    Children’s digital competence (DC) is often poorly supported in early childhood education (ECE). Furthermore, common definition of DC is difficult to find. Therefore, the aim of this comparative curriculum study was to better understand how objectives and content of DC are defined in ECE. Australia and Finland curricula were analyzed applying theory-driven content analysis. The results indicated that in both countries theoretical basis of DC was present: objectives and content of DC referred to (1) technical skills and practices, (2) applying digital technologies, (3) evaluate digital technologies critically, and (4) motivation to participate in a digital culture. However, aims, content, and practical guidelines on the curricula were unclear. This study recommends that ECE curricula should better emphasis and make explicit the key elements of DC and how to holistically foster children’s DC in practice.     Policy and Actors: Discourse and Cultural Repertoire in a Resettlement Project

    This thesis uses anthropological lens to explore the interplay between actor and policy. An ethnographic research was conducted based on a local development case study that involves the relocation of native communities in Borneo. Using a combination method of desk study, participant observation and ethnographic interviews, the study revealed how both project developers and beneficiaries showed cultural proficiency in project-related contestation. The main developer showed how it defined and protect its quest for modernity, while the beneficiary communities displayed ingenuity in expressing their interpretation towards the project that affected their livelihoods.</p

    Evaluation of the Payment by Outcomes Trial 3: First Interim Report

    This is the first report of three that documents an independent evaluation of the Australian Department of Social Services (DSS) Payment by Outcomes Trial 3 (PBO3) over the course of its design and implementation. PBO3 is an exciting and innovative trial that is being led by White Box Enterprises (WBE) as the Australian Government’s contracted service provider. WBE co-developed PBO3 with DSS, social enterprises and impact investors as an innovative mechanism to fund the delivery of long-term employment outcomes for jobseekers experiencing significant barriers to employment. This first report spans PBO3 initiation, design, development and implementation in the first year of service delivery (July 2022 – June 2023). The evaluation consists of: (i) an outcome evaluation focused on how effectively PBO3 has brought about change; and (ii) a process evaluation, which documents design, implementation and operationalisation (inputs, activities and outputs).</p

    Effects of Floquet Engineering on the Coherent Exciton Dynamics in Monolayer WS2

    Coherent optical manipulation of electronic bandstructures via Floquet Engineering is a promising means to control quantum systems on an ultrafast time scale. However, the ultrafast switching on/off of the driving field comes with questions regarding the limits of the Floquet formalism (which is defined for an infinite periodic drive) through the switching process and to what extent the transient changes can be driven adiabatically. Experimentally addressing these questions has been difficult, in large part due to the absence of an established technique to measure coherent dynamics through the duration of the pulse. Here, using multidimensional coherent spectroscopy we explicitly excite, control, and probe a coherent superposition of excitons in the K and K′ valleys in monolayer WS2. With a circularly polarized, red-detuned pump pulse, the degeneracy of the K and K′ excitons can be lifted, and the phase of the coherence rotated. We directly measure phase rotations greater than π during the 100 fs driving pulse and show that this can be described by a combination of the AC-Stark shift of excitons in one valley and the Bloch-Siegert shift of excitons in the opposite valley. Despite showing a smooth evolution of the phase that directly follows the intensity envelope of the nonresonant pump pulse, the process is not perfectly adiabatic. By measuring the magnitude of the macroscopic coherence as it evolves before, during, and after the nonresonant pump pulse we show that there is additional decoherence caused by power broadening in the presence of the nonresonant pump. This nonadiabaticity arises as a result of interactions with the otherwise adiabatic Floquet states and may be a problem for many applications, such as manipulating qubits in quantum information processing; however, these measurements also suggest ways such effects can be minimized or eliminated.</p

    An agenda for creative practice in the new mobilities paradigm

    Creative practices have made a standing contribution to mobilities research. We write this article as a collective of 25 scholars and practitioners to make a provocation: to further position creative mobilities research as a fundamental contribution and component in this field. The article explores how creative forms of research—whether in the form of artworks, exhibitions, performances, collaborations, and more—has been a foundational part of shaping the new mobilities paradigm, and continues to influence its methodological, epistemological, and ontological concerns. We tour through the interwoven history of art and mobilities research, outlining five central contributions that creativity brings. Through short vignettes of each author’s creative practice, we discuss how creativity has been key to the evolution and emergence of how mobilities research has expanded to global audiences of scholars, practitioners, and communities. The article concludes by highlighting the potency of the arts for lively and transdisciplinary pathways for future mobilities research in the uncertainties that lay ahead

    Too Grateful to be Unethical? The Role of Employee Gratitude in the Shaping of their Ethical Decision-making

    Drawing on affective events theory and the affect theory of social exchange, this research investigates whether receiving servant leadership behaviours gives rise to employee state gratitude, which then positively impacts their ethical decision-making. The study included psychological entitlement and perspective taking as moderators. While highlighting the role servant leaders play in nurturing employee gratitude, this research found boundary conditions impinge on the relationship between employee state gratitude and their ethical decision-making. The findings challenge the notion that grateful people are less selfish and offers that as a moral emotion gratitude may not always play a leading role in ethical decision-making.</p

    In our first event for 2023, we explore the theme of Leadership for Social Impact. Leaders within the social impact ecosystem are facing increasingly challenging and complex operating environments, including factors such as economic uncertainty; increased demand for services; workforce management; issues of access and equity; diversity and inclusion; navigating the regulatory landscape; a declining volunteer workforce; and the COVID-19 pandemic. In this event, we will hear from expert speakers from academia and industry whose work speaks directly to some of these challenges and provides insight into the experiences and strategies of leaders as they attempt to maximise the positive social impact of their organisations in widely varied and innovative ways.</p

    The Interplay Between Islamic Work Ethic, Unethical Pro Behaviors, and Moral Identity Internalization: The Moderating Role of Religiosity

    Drawing on the emerging research on Islamic work ethic (IWE) and informed by the social cognitive theory (SCT), this study seeks to examine how IWE influences employees’ behaviors through employees’ moral identity internalization, with religiosity moderating the IWE-moral identity Internalization nexus. To examine this moderated mediation model, we collected time-lagged data (N = 427) from employees working in two public organisations in a Muslim majority country in the Middle East, e.g., Jordan. We used a partial least squares structural equation modelling to examine our hypotheses. Our findings suggest that IWE encourages employees’ moral identity internalization, which subsequently prompts refraining from unethical pro-organisational behaviors (UPOB) and unethical pro-family behaviors (UPFB). The findings also show that employee religiosity plays an important role in the relationship between IWE and employees’ moral identity suggesting that IWE is more prone to influence employee disengagement in UPOB and UPFB through moral identity internalization when employee religiosity is higher. At the end, implications for theory and practice are offered as well as suggestions for future research.</p

    Advanced energy management system for community microgrids with energy sharing capabilities

    An end-to-end community microgrid emulation framework with advanced energy management algorithms; accurate demand and generation forecasting techniques; modelling and simulation of an energy market model capable of peer-to-peer energy sharing capabilities, along with hardware in the loop emulation system is presented in this thesis. Firstly, a robust and dynamic behavioural modelling tool was developed. Secondly, advanced generation and demand forecasting algorithms are used by energy management algorithms for the dynamic orchestration of flexible loads within the microgrids. Finally, a multi-agent-based game-theoretic energy management algorithm for collaborative energy management, enabling energy sharing and energy market transactions is presented.</p
