Linking scholarly articles to SDGs: an automated approach
United Nations (UN) member states adopted the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development in 2015, introducing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Since then, many research articles related to these goals have been published. Universities and research institutes often track their publications related to SDGs by manually tagging them with one or more goals, which is a time-consuming and cost-intensive process. This work proposes an automated approach to tagging publications with a list of related SDGs.
The authors have evaluated their approach with a case study at the Swinburne University of Technology (Melbourne, Australia), using publications already tagged by a domain expert. They used the abstracts or the first paragraph to train two multilabel classifiers, a multilayer perceptron (MLP) and a Dropout Additive Regression Tree (DART). A pre-trained RoBERTa model was used to transform texts into numerical values. The embedding for each paper is the average of all word embeddings. The authors achieved average sensitivity scores across all SDGs of 0.71 for DART and 0.75 for MLP. They intend that their preliminary work will assist in studying trends in research relating to SDGs and in monitoring progress towards achieving SDGs.</p
For the greater good of all? How Australians view the integrity, competence and contribution of federal government
In recent years, as chronicled in countless news stories and reports into trust, public integrity, accountability, transparency and corruption, our institutions of government have become widely seen as places of maladministration and misconduct, more concerned with serving self and vested interests ahead of the public interest. Although these concerns are expressed in relation to all levels of government, they are arguably most pronounced in relation to federal government.
In this report, the Australian Leadership Index takes stock of the current state of federal government leadership for the greater good, as perceived by the Australian public. By examining public perceptions of government integrity, competence and contribution to public value, overall and against national benchmarks, the authors reveal the low esteem in which federal government is held and contextualise the results within Australia’s wider institutional landscape.</p
Implementation of a frailty intervention in the transition from hospital to home: a realist process evaluation protocol for the FORTRESS trial
INTRODUCTION: Frailty in Older people: Rehabilitation, Treatment, Research Examining Separate Settings (the FORTRESS study) is a multisite, hybrid type II, stepped wedge, cluster, randomised trial examining the uptake and outcomes of a frailty intervention. The intervention is based on the 2017 Asia Pacific Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Management of Frailty and begins in the acute hospital setting and transitions to the community. The success of the intervention will require individual and organisational behaviour change within a dynamic health system. This process evaluation will examine the multiple variables at play in the context and mechanism of the frailty intervention to enhance understanding of the outcomes of the FORTRESS study and how the outcomes can be translated from the trial into broader practice. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The FORTRESS intervention will recruit participants from six wards in New South Wales and South Australia, Australia. Participants of the process evaluation will include trial investigators, ward-based clinicians, FORTRESS implementation clinicians, general practitioners and FORTRESS participants. The process evaluation has been designed using realist methodology and will occur in parallel to the FORTRESS trial. A mixed-method approach will be used with qualitative and quantitative data collected from interviews, questionnaires, checklists and outcome assessments. Qualitative and quantitative data will be examined for CMOCs (Context, Mechanism, Outcome Configurations) and programme theories will be developed, tested and refined. This will facilitate development of more generalisable theories to inform translation of frailty intervention within complex healthcare systems. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethical approval for the FORTRESS trial, inclusive of the process evaluation, has been obtained from the Northern Sydney Local Health District Human Research Ethics Committees reference number 2020/ETH01057. This project documents the experiences of Indigenous academics within Australian Universities, the role and place of Indigenous knowledges, and what is needed from the Academy going forward. This research further focuses Indigenous methodologies for academic practice and explores the role of Non-Traditional Research Outputs (NTROs) for the publication of Indigenous research.</p
Effects of Project Management Practices on Project Performance, Moderated by Digital Technologies in Engineering Construction Firms in Pakistan
Project management has been widely applied as a technique for conceptualising, planning, and executing projects worldwide, with mixed success. This study examined the relationship between project management practice and project performance in several projects in the Pakistan construction industry to determine the relationships between these practices, individually and collectively, and their effect on project performance. The study have implications for project managers in the Pakistan construction industry, which could potentially lead to a reduction in project failure and would inform project management methodologies and standards, such as PMBOK, PRINCE 2 and ISO 21500. The research would improve the outcome of the construction projects, thereby, benefiting the society as a whole.</p
Decentralized and Efficient Differential Private Mechanisms in Blockchain-based System
As an emerging technology, blockchain has attracted widespread attention from academia and industry. However, the decentralization and transparency features bring some privacy issues to the users. The adversary can obtain the sensitive chain data via a malicious node or several queries. To address these issues, this thesis proposes decentralized and efficient differential private mechanisms to preserve users' privacy in diverse blockchain-based scenarios. In addition, this thesis analyzes the problems in post-processing and proposes a controllable solution to conduct limited perturbation. The experiment results indicate the proposed solutions provide both a privacy guarantee and better utility than the traditional approaches.</p
Brain Morphological Characteristics of Cognitive Subgroups of Schizophrenia-Spectrum Disorders and Bipolar Disorder: A Systematic Review with Narrative Synthesis
Despite a growing body of research, there is yet to be a cohesive synthesis of studies examining differences in brain morphology according to patterns of cognitive function among both schizophrenia-spectrum disorder (SSD) and bipolar disorder (BD) individuals. We aimed to provide a systematic overview of the morphological differences—inclusive of grey and white matter volume, cortical thickness, and cortical surface area—between cognitive subgroups of these disorders and healthy controls, and between cognitive subgroups themselves. An initial search of PubMed and Scopus databases resulted in 1486 articles of which 20 met inclusion criteria and were reviewed in detail. The findings of this review do not provide strong evidence that cognitive subgroups of SSD or BD map to unique patterns of brain morphology. There is preliminary evidence to suggest that reductions in cortical thickness may be more strongly associated with cognitive impairment, whilst volumetric deficits may be largely tied to the presence of disease
Prediction of Pan Evaporation Rate Using Advanced Artificial Intelligence Techniques
The main objective of this research was to utilise advanced artificial intelligence methods to forecast the rate of evaporation, a crucial component of the water cycle. This doctoral investigation has provided extremely valuable insights into the realm of predicting evaporation, a factor that greatly influences diverse sectors such as agriculture, irrigation, water resource management, and various other areas. Besides that, this study provides hydrologists with actionable insights on how to incorporate soft computing into their analysis of non-stationary and non-linear hydrologic processes.</p
