    Investigating the Mechanical Behaviour of Epoxy Adhesives for Safety Performance Analysis in Light Vehicle Collisions Repair

    This research studies the behavior of impact resistant and panel bonding epoxy adhesive joints when subjected to various types of loading configurations. Several mechanical tests and computer simulations were conducted to characterize and study the behavior of the adhesives used. The research found that the adherend (material being bonded) absorbs the large portion of the impact compared to the adhesive. These results can help manufacturers and repairers in the automotive industry to make better informed choices about what kinds of adhesives and adherends should be used in structural applications

    Iron Ore Sinter Mineralogy and Properties

    Iron ore sinter is crucial for iron and steel production in blast furnaces, but its quality is affected by mineralogy and physical properties. Manipulating sinter properties is challenging due to changing iron ore feed materials and the need to reduce CO2 emissions in production. Recent studies challenge conventional wisdom, suggesting that reducibility is more related to porosity than mineralogy. This project aimed to understand the relationship between sinter mineralogy, porosity, and properties like strength and reducibility. Laboratory-scale experiments showed that mineralogy has a greater impact on reducibility than porosity. Lime and silica additives improved strength. Hydrogen showed promise as a substitute for CO in blast furnaces. These findings challenge traditional sinter concepts and offer insights for improving production, particularly for magnetite ores

    Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) represent a major health problem globally and in Pakistan, leading to morbidity, mortality, and stigma. This research investigated a male university student population's local health beliefs around STIs. It found that participants lacked sexual health information and demonstrated a significant amount of internalised stigma, indicating that their higher level of education had little impact on their understanding of STIs. This was found to be a consequence of limited opportunities to develop sexual health literacy. STI stigma was found to hamper the effectiveness of health information systems and appears to come from the misinterpretation of religious doctrine

    Mitigations for Non-IID labels in Federated XGBoost Classification

    Federated learning, a distributed collaborative framework, has become popular because it ensures participants' datasets stay local, which fundamentally alleviates privacy issues. However, unrestricted participants inevitably bring problems of non-independent and identically distributed data. These problems will cause non-convergence and poor generalization in the classification. This thesis provides a selection of the alternative classification matrix and a new objective function to adjust binary class imbalanced classification. It proposed an index for multi-class imbalance and an algorithm for hyperparameters selection. In addition, two sliding algorithms are proposed to improve the accuracy and convergence of the model by combining two objective functions' advantages

The artefact, Nous, is a board game designed for 10 to 12-year-old children to help them understand how the human brain attains, retains and processes sensory information. The exegesis contextualises the design of the game and discusses questions arising from the process of making Nous, from the conceptual emergence of the work as an early desire for children to toy with brain-making, through to children's considerations of playing a classroom game that introduces them to the anatomy of the brain and effective learning behaviours

    Characterization of a Post Processed Titanium Cold Spray Additive Structure

    Cold spray additive manufacturing (CSAM), or metal 3D printing, can be used for making titanium parts. CSAM parts have high porosity and brittleness, which requires further post-treatment to improve the properties of titanium parts. Due to titanium's reactivity to oxygen, it needs costly protective inert gases, and the post-treatments become expensive. This study used an innovative thermo-mechanical treatment patented by CSIRO in post-treating CSAM structures from grade 2 and grade 5 titanium alloys. This successful and economic thermo-mechanical treatment can be best defined as in-situ electro-plastic treatment (ISEPT), which deploys electric current and load simultaneously on titanium strips

    Exploring trauma, psychosocial processes and the impact of them on quality of life in individuals living with inflammatory bowel disease

    Inflammatory bowel disease is a chronic gastrointestinal condition with an unpredictable course and can lead to difficulties for patients, including physical symptoms (e.g., abdominal pain, bloody stools), medication side effects and diagnostic concerns. This research is designed to explore the prevalence of trauma in this cohort and the impact on patient outcomes. The Common Sense Model was extended to assess the impact of trauma on the relationship between disease activity and patient outcomes. The research contributes to IBD psychosocial research by identifying the prevalence of trauma in this cohort, importance of screening and appropriate treatment referral and the subsequent impact on patient outcomes

    The removal of heavy metals from water by adsorption on to a solid surface has been a widely studied area due to its suitability for removal of these toxins from water. Despite this, not all forces in the adsorption process are completely understood. Because of this, predictive empirical models cannot always explain the adsorption behaviour observed experimentally. This research explores both the role of solvation and how altering the background electrolyte can affect the adsorption process, to contribute to the greater understanding of the metal ion adsorption phenomenon

    Modelling of Dynamics in Productivity Measurement

    This research introduces a new model for productivity measurement that can be applied to any type of production environment, including various production environments, such as agriculture, different industries, or banking services. The model is capable of comparing the productivity levels of one production unit with other units and with itself over time. For example, the proposed approach in this thesis can be used to measure productivity changes in the Australian banking system. This will enable us to track how the productivity level of a specific bank changes over time compared to other banks and its own previous performance
