    A Comparison of the Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) Module III and Self-Report Measures for the AMPD, and their Relationship with Aggression in a Non-Clinical Sample

    To effectively support individuals with personality disorders, it is essential to determine the most reliable approaches to classification, treatment and diagnosis. This thesis evaluated and compared three instruments designed to assess the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders within a non-clinical sample. It also investigated how these measures were related to aggression. The results revealed inconsistencies across the measures, suggesting that different diagnostic outcomes may arise depending on the measure utilised. The findings also highlighted the importance of personality impairment and maladaptive personality traits, particularly hostility, to the assessment and treatment of aggression.</p

    Quality Education in Peruvian Preschool Institutions: An Exploratory Study of Parental and Teachers’ Perceptions

    This study explored the perceptions of teachers and parents regarding quality preschool education in Arequipa, Peru. Using Bronfenbrenner’s proximal processes, semi-structured interviews, and Leximancer software, the study revealed that participants viewed children as central to education, emphasizing a holistic approach beyond academics. Collaboration between teachers, parents, the community, and government was seen as key to quality education. Participants highlighted the need for adequate infrastructure, resources, and support, particularly in rural areas, and advocated for the implementation of educational quality standards. The study called for including these voices in shaping educational policies in Peru.</p

    This thesis analyses video game narratives that track player choices before providing players with personalised outcomes. It draws a connection between these games and other features of our culture, such as personality tests, online astrology star charts and step trackers. While these systems can reinforce a culture of self-conformity to external metrics, they can also function as a playful form of digital tea leaves. Through a series of case studies, this thesis looks at the various ways that these games can potentially generate forms of community, encourage self-reflection, and challenge or reinforce elements of our surveillance culture. </p

    The spectrum of how much or how little organizational processes should be automated has long been debated. As the world undergoes a digital transformation where contactless and frictionless are promoted as two aspects that should be honored, many academics are questioning both the frenetic deployment of digital transformation in learning and teaching environments (e.g., face-to-face classrooms, library and academic office spaces, and laboratories, virtual/hybrid modalities, etc.) and its corresponding validity to students. Indeed, little consultation seems to have taken place with the necessary stakeholders, such as academics, students, instructional designers and pedagogical experts, during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Rather, discussions and decisions appear to have been reactive regarding which modalities of teaching delivery might be the best in a given context, based on operational scenarios directly linked to financials, such as student recruitment trends, and local legislative changes affecting international students. Furthermore, many academic faculty and a great number of corresponding auxiliary staff have found themselves in the unemployment queue. This paper seeks to present the possibilities that AI-based systems may bring to higher education, but in so doing, point to the harmonization required to offer the most appropriate solutions to the needs of both students and teachers, as well as university administration. Education is not a commodity, although it has been treated as one. We are not advocating for an open market which offers “free education” for all, though we wish for everyone to have adequate access to education. But we are certainly advocating for a future in which students and teachers are central to the learning and teaching environment, not relegated to a passive role nor exploited. This article uses Shiv Ramdas’ short science fiction story, “The Trolley Solution”, to work through the future possibilities of AI in higher education. </p

    Connecting Pathways to Employment with the Work Integration Social Enterprise (WISE) - Ability Model: Final Report

    CSI researchers have been working with Disability Enterprises (previously known as Australian Disability Enterprises or ADEs) to develop an organisational design model to support pathways to mainstream employment for participants. This approach builds on previous work with Work Integration Social Enterprises (WISEs) that identified the organisational design features that best support the health, wellbeing, and employment outcomes of marginalised young people in a social enterprise environment. WISEs have a social purpose to provide transitional pathways to meaningful work for people with experiences of marginalisation, including people with a disability. In this report we: Provide an updated WISE-Ability model and share findings from our research with Disability Enterprise partners; Outline the challenges Disability Enterprises face in carving out employment pathways using NDIS funding. Outline what works to generate employment pathways.</p

    Exploring the Relationship between Higher Education Students’ Prior English Proficiency, Academic English Self-efficacy and Online Engagement

    This study examined the relationship between Malaysian pre-university students’ Prior English Proficiency, Academic English Self-efficacy and their Online Engagement using a mixed-method approach. Quantitative results showed a moderate positive correlation among all variables, but no mediating effects of Prior English Proficiency and Academic English Self-efficacy were found. In addition, qualitative findings indicated that students from different English proficiency levels had similar interaction experiences with peers, instructors and content with minor differences. The results suggest that all students regardless of English proficiency, can benefit from high levels of interaction, providing valuable insights for students, higher education institutions, educators and course designers.</p

    Stability challenges and prospects for the industrial application of non‐noble catalysts for selective catalytic reduction of NOx by CO (CO‐SCR)

    The selective catalytic reduction of NOx by CO (CO-SCR) holds considerable promise as a simple and cost-effective technology capable of concurrently removing CO and NOx from mobile and stationary sources. This is especially pertinent for industry sectors with high CO emissions, such as the iron and steel industry, making CO-SCR an attractive solution with significant industrial applicability. However, despite the promising industrial potential of CO-SCR technology, its widespread adoption is hindered by several factors, most notably the impacts of SO2, H2O, and O2 on catalyst performance and stability. Current research on these limiting factors is not exhaustive, posing challenges for the comprehensive industrial implementation of CO-SCR technology. Therefore, this review paper focuses on the variables impeding the industrial utilization of CO-SCR, summarizing existing bottlenecks and emphasizing the urgent need to address the inhibitory effects of O2 on the CO-SCR reaction, a critical issue in contemporary research. This review aims to clearly articulate the key challenges of CO-SCR technology and provide direction for future research.</p

    Experimental Investigation of Waste Tyre Rubber and Recycled Concrete Aggregate as a Pavement Material

    This study explores sustainable solutions in pavement engineering by incorporating recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) and waste tyre rubber (TR). By employing industrial by-products like ground granulated blast furnace slag (S), the research enhances the binding between TR and RCA, providing an alternative pavement material. The investigations were carried out in three stages: unbound TR+RCA mixes, slag-stabilised mixes, and slag-geopolymer stabilised mixes. Results indicate improved mechanical properties and improved microstructure offering a promising alternative to traditional pavement materials. This innovative approach contributes to environmental conservation, reducing carbon footprints, and minimizing landfill usage, showcasing significant advancements in sustainable infrastructure practices.</p
