Deep learning techniques for load forecasting in large commercial buildings by using Data during Pandemic COVID-19
This study tackles the issue of accurately forecasting energy consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through the development of advanced forecasting models for energy usage in buildings, the research aims to establish adaptable frameworks for future crises and similar scenarios. The results emphasize notable decreases in energy consumption during periods of lockdown, especially in the commercial and industrial sectors. With the enhancement in prediction accuracy, the proposed models provide valuable insights for efficient energy management. This research has a scientific contribution by improving the adaptability of power systems to changing demands and ensuring more reliable energy management in crises.</p
Synergistic removal of CO and NO from flue gas based on CO-SCR technology
This research focuses on developing cost-effective and stable catalysts for industrial use in reducing harmful nitrogen oxides (NO) emissions from exhaust gases. A novel catalyst with improved structure and surface properties was created, showing high efficiency in converting NO to less harmful substances at lower temperatures. Additionally, a cheaper catalyst with enhanced resistance to oxygen was developed, maintaining high performance even in challenging conditions. The study provides insights into the catalysts' mechanisms, contributing to cleaner air and environmental protection. Social and Cultural Impacts of Australian Football with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities
This thesis explores the social and cultural impacts of Australian Football (AFL) with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. A decolonised approach to research was embodied by the non-Indigenous researcher to prioritise Indigenous worldviews and knowledges. Ninety-nine program participants and managers from AFL Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander programs were engaged in interviews and yarning circles. Through an integrated Indigenous socio-ecological model, findings highlight the central role of culture in program design and outcomes. This research ultimately presents fundamental design principles for decolonising program design, prioritising Indigenous worldviews and challenging Western approaches to realise self-determined, long-term outcomes.</p
Antimicrobial Coatings with Essential Oils for Biofilm Control
The thesis investigates the development of release-based chitosan antimicrobial coatings with eugenol, an essential oil component, as a main bioactive compound and the characterisation of their chemical, physical, pH-responsive release and antimicrobial properties. Although the chitosan coatings showed some antimicrobial activity against planktonic and sessile adherent bacteria, the incorporation of eugenol was demonstrated to be essential to its optimal antibiofilm and antimicrobial activities. The coating in this work serves as a base for future developments of chitosan-based materials incorporated with other antibiotic alternatives that can be used as an effective strategy to prevent biofilm formation on medical devices.</p
Summary Report. Elements of Successful Evidence Centres: Foundations for a Disability Employment Centre of Excellence
In May 2024, the Australian federal government announced a budget commitment of $23.3 million over four years to establish a Disability Employment Centre of Excellence from 2024-25.Prior to this, and in response to public consultation regarding the purpose and organisational model of a proposed Disability Employment Centre of Excellence in Australia, a private philanthropic foundation commissioned a team of researchers from CSI Swinburne to answer the question:What are the key elements of successful evidence centre models (both national and international) or other practice-focused centres?From the research, five core and overlapping elements of centre design are evident. It provides the evidence base that can inform future decision-making about the model best suited to the proposed aspirations of the Disability Employment Centre of Excellence in the Australian context.This report is a summary of a more detailed report prepared by the Centre for Social Impact (CSI), Swinburne University of Technology, called Elements of Successful Evidence Centres: Foundations for a Disability Employment Centre of Excellence.</p
Interorganisational Networks and Systemic Misconduct in the Australian Financial Services Industry
This study investigates systemic misconduct in the Australian financial services industry. It challenges the common focus on individual accountability in financial misconduct by exploring how disparate entities, without intentional collaboration, exhibit similar misconduct patterns, spreading across the industry through interorganisational networks. Using Exponential Random Graph Models (ERGMs), the study finds statistically significant evidence of systemic misconduct, where entities share ties to misconduct within and across industry sectors. The findings suggest that misconduct is a systemic issue, not just a result of "bad apples," with implications for legislation, supervision, and management both in Australia and globally.</p
Centrifuge modelling and numerical investigation of geotechnical seismic isolation systems for sustainable construction
The study found that the excellent performance of geotechnical seismic isolation systems can significantly reduce structural demand under dynamic loading. The advantages of the geotechnical seismic isolation systems include but not limited to: isolator effects, cost-effective, sustainable development and material resource abundance. The performance of multi-storey building placed on geotechnical seismic isolation system can satisfy the serviceability limit state design in terms of immediate settlement and human comfort.</p
Cocreated value and wellbeing of beneficiaries in community-based tourism destinations
The thesis explores Community-based Tourism (CBT), which involves local communities actively participating in managing tourism businesses to create enriching experiences for tourists and themselves. It investigates collaborative value and wellbeing creation among various actors, drawing on service-dominant logic and social exchange theory. Qualitative research in Phillip Island, Australia, uncovers diverse cocreation activities and outcomes, shedding light on tourists' and locals' evolving value perception over time. Furthermore, it explores how individuals experience wellbeing through connections with themselves, others, and nature. This research enhances understanding of multi-actor value cocreation in CBT destinations, providing insights for sustainable and inclusive tourism practices.</p
Development Of Concurrent Activation And Surface Modification (CAM) Process In Palm Kernel Shell-Derived Activated Carbon Production For Post-Combustion Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Adsorption
Palm kernel shell-derived activated carbon (PKSdAC) have been studied for CO2 capture given their unique structure, easy to modify, and low-cost compared to amine-based absorption. This research studies concurrent activation and surface modification (CAM) process to produce PKSdAC using sulphuric acid and barium chloride as activating and doping agents. Parametric optimization of PKSdAC production condition was performed to enhance its porous structure and surface affinity. The optimum CAM-PKSdAC was investigated for its CO2 adsorption performance and stability using customized lab-scale gas adsorption tower against conventional surface modified-activated PKSdAC.
