    Machine Learning-Based Inverse Modeling of Manufacturing Processes

    In modern manufacturing, identifying the optimal input process parameters to achieve desired output characteristics is crucial for cost reduction and waste minimization. While artificial neural networks cannot fully solve the inverse modeling problem, this study proposes using machine learning techniques that combine neural networks with evolutionary algorithm-based models, such as particle swarm optimization, to address this challenge. This thesis presents eight publications, including one published in a high-impact journal - IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics, resulting from this research, that aim to tackle and resolve the complex inverse modeling problem in manufacturing using two manufacturing processes as case studies.</p

    Effective Giving: The Nature of Grant Risk in Australian Foundations

    This study explored how grant-makers experience risk in their funding decisions. It found that the ability for grantees to execute their interventions was a key concern for foundations, as well as the foundation's own ability to reliably evaluate the drivers of success for any grant made. To mitigate the impacts of such risks, foundations utilise a number of techniques, including information verification, staged funding and funding flexibility. Herein, the study highlighted key themes of informational deficiencies and an increasing role of foundations in solving society's problems. The study has developed a useful framework that matches foundation characteristics with grant risk management considerations, which can provide grant-makers with tools to lift confidence in their funding decisions.</p

    Towards Sustainability of Training Transfer: Examining the Impact of an Introductory Training Program on Teachers’ Teaching Practices in the Educational Omani Context

    This study aims to investigate the dominant factors influencing the transfer of training (TOT) in the New Omani Teachers' Program (NOT) and understand how these factors influence training transfer after program completion. The research also seeks to identify ways to improve TOT following participation in the NOT program. In the educational Omani context, the lack of a systematic evaluation process for training transfer poses a significant challenge in training transfer evaluation. Employing a sequential explanatory mixed methods design, this study utilized the Learning Transfer System Inventory (LTSI) survey as the initial data collection instrument. Subsequently, in-depth individual interviews were conducted to gain a comprehensive understanding of the factors affecting success or failure of training transfer. The study included participants from the seventh cohort of the New Omani Teachers' Program, totaling 192 individuals who successfully completed the training program. The findings reveal that the work environment emerges as the most dominant factor influencing the training transfer process. To enhance training transfer and its evaluation, specific conditions, collectively referred to as SAFE, need to be incorporated into the work environment. SAFE stands for Support, Adequacy, Feedback and Engagement. This research contributes to the field theoretically, practically and methodologically. </p

    Sport as a political football: understanding the collision of sport and politics

    While the sport-politics nexus is not new, there is little doubt that the collision of sport and politics has become more frequent, more complex, and in many instances, more intense. This paper draws on the theory and historical observations of Johan Huizinga and Norbert Elias to provide a theoretical lens through which we can understand the interplay between sport and politics. Furthermore, the Huizinga-Elias theoretical framework allows us to examine the role of sporting organisations in political and social conflicts, and how we can understand the complexities and nuances of how sporting organisations, and their athletes, have become engaged in political debates. The paper expounds the Huizinga-Elias theory through the case study of Australian Football League Indigenous footballer Adam Goodes who became engulfed in a nationwide social and political discussion about racism after he was racially vilified by a 13-year-old fan during a game in 2013. The theory implies that the interaction between sport and politics is unavoidable, thus highlighting that sporting organisations should embrace this reality by promoting their values, orienting their actions towards a common good, playing an active role advancing society and ultimately fostering and enriching communities.</p

This study explores innovative surface engineering techniques, including the cold spray method, to improve the antimicrobial efficacy of common polymeric biomaterials. Furthermore, the research demonstrate the development of multifunctional biomaterials with controlled interactions with living biological systems. These advancements exhibit enhancements in osteogenic activity, bacterial repellence, bactericidal effectiveness, and host compatibility of biomaterial surfaces through tailored manipulation of the physical and chemical properties. By addressing these critical factors, the study aims to offer a viable solution for reducing medical device-associated infections and ultimately improving patient outcomes.</p

    3D Printing Integration in Engineering Education: A Developing Country Perspectives

    Three-dimensional printing (3DP) has become a disruptive manufacturing technology that benefits the manufacturing and educational sectors. Although developing countries face common barriers, such as qualified trainers, equipment, or lack of resources to integrate 3DP in higher education, no studies have systematically investigated the extent to which these barriers are prevalent and how they are overcome. Using a mixed methods approach, this thesis identifies the barriers and provides recommendations for educators and policymakers to better leverage 3DP technology in engineering education. Based on these findings, a framework is proposed to integrate sustainability through 3DP into the higher education
