MINA XIII screening catalogue
MINA is the longest-running film festival in the Southern Hemisphere dedicated to mobile and smartphone filmmaking with a focus on moving-image arts, documentary, community-engaged film productions, experimental films and emerging film production forms and formats, such as MoJo, drone videos, AR, Mobile AI and Mobile Cinematic VR.With submissions from every continent, Schleser curated an international screening program for the 13th edition of the MINA Smartphone Film Festival. MINA#2024 featured mobile and smartphone films from Argentinian, Australia, Canada, France, Israel, New Zealand/Aotearoa, Portugal, Spain, United Kingdom and United States of America. As a festival with the merit to capture the innovations in screen storytelling as much as the contemporary Zeitgeist, Schleser included Mobile AI productions as part of the Innovation category.</p
Development and evaluation of simulation models for assessing the impacts of connected and automated vehicles
This research investigates the impacts of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) on traffic efficiency, safety and environmental impacts in the Australian context. A Melbourne-based simulation model was developed to examine how varying mixes of human-driven, autonomous, and connected vehicles impact traffic performance under diverse scenarios, highlighting significant efficiency, safety, and emissions benefits with higher CAV adoption, vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication integration. A public survey was undertaken which revealed hesitations about CAV safety, reliability, and control, but noted support for the technology among people with disabilities. The thesis provides policy recommendations that emphasise public education, infrastructure investment, and incentives to foster trust and adoption, supporting Australia's sustainability goals.</p
Mechanical Properties of 3D Printed Fibre Reinforced Composites subjected to Quasi-static and Dynamic Loadings
The deformation and mechanical properties of 3D printed continuous fibre reinforced composites (CFRCs) have been investigated in this thesis. Fibres involved are carbon, glass or Kevlar fibers. By studying how various printing parameters, material combinations and test conditions affect the performance of the printed CFRCs, the findings contribute to making 3D printing more effective and accessible for fabricating advanced and durable products. This work supports innovation in manufacturing, offering sustainable and cost-efficient ways to produce high-performance materials that benefit industries such as aerospace, automotive, and defense.</p

Not poor enough, not rich enough: older people falling through the housing assistance eligibility gap
This report highlights the urgent housing challenges faced by older Australians. The growing number and proportion of people aged 55 years or older unable to afford homeownership, coupled with an increase in older Australians entering fixed-income retirement, has resulted in a considerable rise in those living in non-ownership housing tenures, particularly privately rented dwellings and/or carrying mortgage to retirement. Additionally, the availability and accessibility of public and community housing has declined, as have income-based, genuinely affordable income-based retirement living options.
The novel contribution of this research lies in the conceptualisation and operationalisation of the Missing Middle group, namely, Australians aged 55 or older who do not qualify for housing assistance yet lack sufficient income or assets for long-term, stable housing. Our research estimates that approximately 508,000 people belong to this group. The findings reveal varying degrees of housing precarity among this cohort</p
Epigenetic and geometrical characterisation of cancer cell populations: A personalised-medicine oriented mathematical study of tumour evolutionary dynamics and therapies
The thesis focuses on oncological mathematics, developing various mathematical models with distinct theoretical approaches to describe the evolution of tumour masses. It considers the epigenetic and geometric characterisation of cancer cell populations, their interaction with the environment, and the application of therapies. Key objectives achieved include the qualitative and quantitative reproduction of clinical observations using biologically consistent models, the utilisation of models for predictive purposes, and the establishment of design strategies for patient-specific protocols. This work introduces novel modelling approaches, contributes to a deeper understanding of tumour dynamics, and supports the advancement of personalised medicine.</p
Dietary Patterns and Glucoregulation: Their Role in Neurocognitive Health and Age-Related Decline
This thesis investigates the relationship between dietary patterns, glucose regulation, and neurocognitive decline in aging populations. It addresses mixed findings in diet-brain health research through a systematic review, develops a reproducible dietary scoring workflow, and examines white matter microstructure using advanced neuroimaging. Two empirical studies explore the impact of healthy dietary patterns on cognitive aging and brain connectivity differences associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus. While age correlated with poorer cognitive function and white matter integrity, dietary adherence showed inconsistent effects. The thesis emphasizes the need for standardized methods and reproducibility in future large-scale studies to better understand the complex interplay between diet, glucoregulation, and brain integrity in aging.</p
Lactic acid bacteria with antagonistic properties towards dairy food microbial contaminants and mastitis pathogens
This research helped to isolate and identify Lactic Acid Bacteria with potent antimicrobial properties exhibiting greater inhibition against different foodborne pathogens. These LAB could be used as a bio-preservatives in many dairy products instead of chemical preservatives, and could protect public health and reduce the incidence of foodborne pathogens and spoilage microorganisms in different food products. Similarly, these LAB could be used as an alternative to antibiotics to treat many diseases due to their beneficial antimicrobial properties and could mitigate the problem of increased antibiotic resistance in bacteria due to overuse or misuse of antibiotics.</p
Sequestration of Cement Industry CO2 Emission in Cement Kiln Dust to Produce Building Material
The cement industry plays a vital role in global development, yet it is known to generate tremendous waste, notably CO2 and cement kiln dust (CKD). This research introduced an innovative CO2 capture process, the potable water-operated Accelerated Weathering of Limestone process, to convert CO2 into a Ca(HCO3)2 solution. Following this, a novel CO2 utilization process was developed to transform CKD and sand, using the Ca(HCO3)2 solution, into sustainable green building materials. The research effectively converts waste into valuable products, offering dual benefits: potential profitability and reduced environmental impact for the cement industry, which propels the world into a greener future.</p
Exploring the knowledge, attitude and practices of healthcare professionals about spinal cord injury in Pakistan
The project explores the knowledge, attitude and practices of healthcare professionals about spinal cord injury in Pakistan. This project would enable the healthcare professionals to understand the issues in accessing appropriate healthcare for this group, the gaps in the awareness and practices have also been addressed. Once this is ascertained the findings can be shared with healthcare professionals to enable them to outline strategies to improve the gaps through targeted interventions. This will also empower healthcare professionals with the necessary skills and knowledge required for optimal spinal cord injury management. At the government level, this could be in the form of policies for interventions at healthcare facility level. Additionally the research can contribute to the ongoing dialogue surrounding contemporary health practices in the context of spinal cord injury, fostering more compassionate and effective healthcare for affected individuals. Furthermore the research benefits healthcare professionals, towards people living with spinal cord injury, carers, policy makers of government and non-government organizations, people living with spinal cord injury and carers.</p
