    A Modified Gravity Phenomenology in Space and Time

    Einstein's Theory of General Relativity allows us to distinguish between the repulsive pressure of Dark Energy and the apparently-waning gravitational attraction of light and Dark Matter. Dark Energy drives galaxies apart more forcefully than their intergalactic gravity can compete with, whilst Dark Matter constitutes the trellis that supports the large-scale distribution of galaxies. In this thesis, by contrasting the spatial arrangements of galaxies with the behaviour of their light beams across space and time, we investigate the prospects of extending or modifying Einstein’s Theory of Gravity to explain the sudden accelerated cosmic expansion observed by astronomers. We apply our methods to the leading current galaxy datasets, and discuss the farreaching scientific potential of upcoming observational advances.</p

    This thesis investigates the impact of road conditions on traffic safety in Kuching City. By analyzing pavement data and road users' perceptions, the study identifies critical factors influencing crash frequencies, including pavement distresses, geometric design, and roadside environmental conditions. The research highlights significant variations in crash rates based on road quality, with poor conditions accounting for the majority of incidents. This study fills a critical gap by linking technical road assessments with user experiences, providing valuable insights for developing effective road safety strategies and infrastructure improvements, ultimately contributing to safer roads, enhanced public safety, and improved overall road user satisfaction.</p

    Ambient Future investigates how ambient culture was identified and defined as an influence upon music, and how it then spread to a wide range of other social, cultural, and organisational contexts. It defines “ambient practice” as a transferrable set of approaches that have evolved from the mindset inherent in ambient music. Ambient Future surveys the history of ambient music in the twentieth century and identifies key aspects of ambient practice that have parallels in media, marketing and political communications. It establishes how ambient practice has become a subtle influence on almost all aspects of culture, communication, and social organisation.</p

    This exegesis investigates the design and development of parallel interactive narratives in cinematic virtual reality by adopting practice-based research in the form of screen production enquiry and reflective documentation. This research initially utilized an agile research method to examine the software and hardware technology for developing parallel interactive narratives in cinematic virtual reality through the artefact Slices. The inferences from Slices are further developed to produce and exhibit the artefact Table for Two. This research contributes to the development from storytelling towards storyliving in virtual reality experiences, defines best practices for designing and developing parallel interactive narratives in virtual reality and outlines the new production roles and responsibilities for such projects.</p

    LoRa® Based Linear and Near-linear Networks

    In this thesis, we have conducted field trials to investigate the range of LoRa® technology in different terrains including bushland and observe the influence of distance on LoRa® signal strength. We have explored the possible approaches to the implementation of LoRa® as a relay technology in linear and near-linear networks. In particular, we have developed a novel approach to dealing with contention for a shared LoRa® channel by taking advantage LoRa®'s synchronisation mechanism. We also explored low complexity routing in linear and near-linear networks including branch pruning and gossip routing.</p

    Will a drink or two actually make you a better driver? This thesis addressed this enduring debate by diving into decades of drink-driving research. By integrating epidemiological data and experimental investigations, this work adds to the current understanding of how alcohol impairs driving and related neurocognitive functions. A key focus was to determine the prevalence of such behaviour and quantify the consequent impairment. Despite an inability to identify their impairment, drivers under the influence consistently exhibit poorer performance on driving tasks. In shedding light on this contradiction, the findings of this thesis question the unfounded self-assurance of those who consider themselves “good drunk drivers” and contributes to a critical conversation about road safety

    The Sustainable GRC Façade Panel Design using Recycled Polymers

    Glass fiber reinforced concrete (GRC) is a sustainable material for facades, but adding polymer affects sustainability and combustibility. Waste paint can replace commercial polymers in GRC, managing waste effectively. Adding waste paint, up to 1% of cement weight, improves workability; further additions reduce it. Waste paint enhances GRC's hardened properties, significantly boosting flexural and compressive strengths. At smaller percentages, waste paint-modified GRC is non-combustible, meeting Australian standards for building envelopes. Rheological properties decrease with paint addition, making paint-modified GRC suitable for 3D printing. 3D printed waste paint-modified GRC exhibits increased strength in all directions tested
