    Improving Privacy and Recommendation Accuracy Advancements for Collaborative Filtering in Diverse Service Environments

    Behavioural chronotherapies, zeitgebers and mood: An investigation of the open circadian system in mental health

    There is renewed interest in the role of chronobiology in human health. Comprising five work packages, this project advanced research into interventions targeting the circadian system (i.e., chronotherapy). Findings offer new insights into the promising role of chronotherapy in the treatment of mood problems in mental health; empirical support for a fundamental hypothesis underpinning chronotherapies and the importance of incorporating lived experience perspectives when developing and/or refining future interventions. Further, a conceptual framework for explaining and intervening mood phenomena in mental health is proposed. Key knowledge gaps are highlighted and a research agenda to propel investigations into chronotherapy is outlined.</p

    Development of novel in situ techniques for material and behavioural investigations into lead-acid batteries

    The research introduces innovative methods for real-time, in situ analysis of lead-acid battery materials, addressing a significant gap in current methodologies. New techniques were developed, including a design for synchrotron X-ray imaging, a non-invasive approach for measuring electrolyte composition using Raman spectroscopy, and a model for understanding flow cell dynamics. These advancements offer significant potential for enhancing battery performance and could be adapted to other electrochemical systems, benefiting a wide range of energy storage technologies.</p

    Informed by the work of environmental philosopher Arran Gare, this Ph.D. thesis situates the emergence of the public good conception of water in its cultural and ecological context, highlighting the role Alfred Deakin’s liberal socialism played in this political project; critically analyses the implications of the commodification of water in the 1980s, specifically in relation to public policy, agricultural production and democratic organisation; and develops an ethical framework synthesising insights from both the natural and human sciences to justify strengthening community and democratic control over water policy, which can transform the trajectory of both Australian federalism and global civilisation.</p

    Development of a Computational Drug Discovery Pipeline for RNA Inhibitors: A Case Study with Targeting microRNA-21

    RNAs, particularly non-coding RNA types are known to be involved in several cancers hijacking several cellular pathways. Drug discovery efforts in finding therapies against these RNA types is cost-ineffective and time-consuming. As an alternative, this work, involved the development of a computational drug discovery pipeline for RNA drug discovery that is cost and time efficient. This pipeline can be applied by the drug discovery community to discover novel and effective RNA-based therapies for several cancers. </p

    The impact of nonvisual effects of daylight on building occupants: Implications on lighting standards and human centric lighting design

    This research tested people's physiological and psychological responses to daylight. Daylight was measured at eye level using the newly developed non-visual light measurement unit. The study found that bright light exposure was associated with calmer heart rate response as well as relationships between heart rate changes and some psychological measures. The findings show that incorporating better daylighting into building design benefits occupants both psychologically and physiologically. Further, lighting design reference measurements should be taken at eye level, as there were significant differences between the current lighting standard's that assess light at the horizontal benchtop and eye level measurements.</p

    In Space There Is No Status Quo: Space Communities as Social Experimentation Regarding Reproduction and Kinship

    Human societies possess various moral and legal codes that rely on precedent; an act can be considered “right” simply by virtue of its having always been done that way before. Cultural norms can be hard to challenge, and laws are often slow to change. Emerging technologies are often cast as a threat to social values, with reproductive technologies representing a particular concern if they challenge traditionally held views of kinship and family structure. Creating a multicultural community of humans in space provides an opportunity to explore alternative reproductive futures and family arrangements without exposing existing human societies to unknown risks or being constrained by precedent. As social norms for such a community have not yet been established, conscious and deliberate consideration of how we might want such a community to form and propagate is possible. As family-making is an essential element of society building, this chapter will consider emerging reproductive technologies in the light of future space exploration and habitation.</p

    The Moderating Role of Technology Readiness and Transformational Leadership in the Relationships between Technostress Creators, Job Burnout, and Work Withdrawal Behaviour

    This study reveals key findings about how frontline service employees (FSEs) cope with technostress through technology readiness (TR) traits and transformational leadership (TFL). It shows that technostress creators directly affect job burnout, leading to work withdrawal behaviour among FSEs. TR discomfort heightens the impact of technostress on work withdrawal via burnout, while surprisingly, TR innovativeness exacerbates these effects. Contrary to expectations, TFL intensifies the relationship between technostress, burnout, and work withdrawal. These results emphasise the need for organisations to consider individual TR traits and the complex role of TFL in managing technostress to enhance employee outcomes.</p

    This research examines economic development in a rural region, specifically how and why local people are supported to start new businesses in the region. I shine a light on the people providing support to entrepreneurs, and concentrate on how these supporters manoeuvre around social, political, environmental and economic tensions to create new economic options locally. This research shows how powerful people elsewhere shape economic outcomes in rural regions, and the strategies used by rural regions to carve out space for their own ideas and values. This research opens up new directions for designing just and sustainable development
