Sulforaphane targets multiple pathological processes in Friedreich ataxia patient induced pluripotent stem cells-derived sensory neurons

    No full text
The thesis investigated the therapeutic potential of a broccoli-derived compound, sulforaphane, for the treatment of an inherited and incurable disease called Friedreich ataxia. The death of cells in the spinal cord, known as sensory neurons, are a key cell type affected in early disease. This study established the molecular profile of genetically diverse sensory neurons derived from patient induced stem cells, and compared the efficacy of sulforaphane with that of the only clinically approved drug, Skyclarys. The study revealed that sulforaphane can improve the viability of sensory neurons while targeting multiple disease processes including the genetic cause, an advantage which Skyclarys lacks. This study has advanced the Friedreich ataxia drug discovery pipeline.</p

The use of in-vehicle telematics for measuring and improving the driving performance of young people

    No full text
Globally, young drivers are overrepresented in road traffic collisions and interventions are necessary to address this problem. In-vehicle telematics can provide driving feedback both immediately during a driving trip or after the trip has been completed. This thesis determined the effectiveness of in-vehicle telematics both in measuring driving behaviour and in positively changing driving behaviour to promote safer driving for young drivers. It was found that in-vehicle telematics is a strong driving behaviour data collection tool and that providing feedback to young drivers through in-vehicle telematics can have a positive influence on their driving behaviour.</p

Moderating Role of Corporate Governance in the Relationships Between Tax Avoidance, Earnings Management and Corporate Sustainability Disclosures in Malaysian Listed Firms

    No full text
This study examines how listed firms on the Malaysian stock exchange disclose information about their sustainability efforts, particularly when they may be hiding unexpected financial activities. It finds that companies trying to avoid taxes or engage in earnings often report more about sustainability. However, when boards include more women, independent members, and a dedicated committee for sustainability, these reports become more trustworthy. The research helps establish clearer standards for sustainability reporting and supports more informed decision-making by investors and regulators. It also highlights how diverse leadership can encourage honesty and ethical behaviour in business practices that affect society.</p

Deep Learning Based Intrusion Detection for Internet of Things and Edge Devices

    No full text
Internet of Things and edge devices are increasingly used across industries but are highly vulnerable to cyberattacks due to limited computational power. Deep learning-based Intrusion Detection Systems offer strong protection but are often too resource-intensive for such environments. This research proposes binary neural networks as a lightweight alternative, enabling efficient, real-time IDS on resource-constrained devices. Results demonstrate their potential to provide effective security while maintaining low computational overhead.</p

Inter-Organisational Collaborations Between Aboriginal and Mainstream Organisations in Australia

    No full text
This research examined inter-organisational collaborations between Aboriginal and mainstream organisations in Australia, with a focus on the factors that enable or hinder effective partnerships and how these dynamics evolve over time. Drawing on longitudinal interview data from participants involved in a large-scale community program, the study identified five key factors -- legitimacy, shared understanding, communication, time, and trust -- that underpin successful inter-organisational collaboration. The research presents a practical framework with strategies to support more respectful, inclusive, and effective partnerships. By strengthening collaborative practices, the study supports stakeholders -- both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal -- to build stronger working relationships.</p

Highly sensitive and selective hydrogen gas sensors employing photoactive hybrid nanomaterials

    No full text
This research focused on developing advanced materials for detecting hydrogen gas with high accuracy, fast response, and stability at low temperatures. The study explored how these materials behave under different light and voltage conditions, improving their performance and energy efficiency. The findings contribute to safer use of hydrogen in energy systems by enabling early leak detection. This work supports the global shift toward cleaner energy by enhancing the safety and reliability of hydrogen technologies in everyday applications such as transportation, industry, and portable devices.</p

Data Driven HR Practices and Employee Retention: A Case of Pakistan

    No full text
The advancement of digital technologies and data analytics has reshaped human capital management, encouraging the implementation of Data-Driven Human Resource Practices. Grounded in Institutional Theory, this study examines the impact of Data-Driven Human Resource Practices on Employee Retention, with Employee Digital Literacy as a mediator. Results indicate a significant direct relationship between Data-Driven Human Resource Practices and Employee Retention. However, Leadership Commitment and Digital Technologies did not significantly moderate the relationship of Data-Driven Human Resource Practices and Employee Retention. This research offers valuable insights for HR professionals and policymakers in Pakistan and other developing economies, supporting the development of digitally capable, resilient workforces in a data-driven environment.</p

Developing Technologies for Thermal Spraying Composite Materials

    No full text
This thesis details the technological development of a lightweight, corrosion and wear-resistant marine hydraulic cylinder actuator. A novel multi-layered structure—glass fibre reinforced polymer, titanium sleeve, and tungsten-carbide nickel-chromium thermal spray coating was manufactured using high-velocity oxy-fuel thermal spray with advanced cooling techniques. The prototype was developed from conceptual design to a fully functional device, demonstrating structural integrity, dimensional stability, and excellent surface performance under hydrostatic pressure of 30 mega-pascals and 200,000 load cycles. The composite prototype achieved a 63 per cent weight reduction compared to a conventional Monel K-500 rod, offering an industry-ready solution for demanding marine applications.</p

How can theories of gender and rape culture be reconciled in an integrative, cohesive theory?

    No full text
Through an analysis of academic uses of the terminology rape culture, this thesis contributes to feminist and sociological understandings of rape culture and gender based sexual violence. Employing a critical, intersectional lens, this work examines gendered sexual violence and rape culture in contemporary Australian and analogisable cultures within the Anglosphere. Drawing on foundational feminist works and gender theory, this thesis is a development of an integrative theory of rape culture, heteronormativity and gender.</p

Advancing the Study of Lived Experience, Peer Support, and Recovery: A Critical Mixed-Methods Investigation

    No full text
This thesis explores how recovery-focused approaches and support from people with personal experience of mental health challenges can positively influence identity and emotional wellbeing. Using both statistical and narrative methods, the research shows that peer support can reduce stigma, build confidence, and foster connection. It also highlights the value of safe, inclusive spaces where people feel understood. By critically examining how mental health systems engage with lived experience, the project offers insights for improving services and promoting dignity, belonging, and recovery for people often marginalised in mental health care.</p
