Waste to Worth: Transforming Lace Clippings for Textile Flocking (MDW & FFE)
This output represents the first iteration of a multi-component creative practice portfolio investigating circular textile innovation. Developed through the EU WORTH Partnership, a competitive peer-reviewed European programme supporting research-led design innovation, it explores the transformation of cotton yarn clippings from Scottish Madras (Scotch Leno) lace production at MYB Textiles into natural cotton flock fibre for textile and surface applications. The research addresses two material challenges: diverting lace production clippings from landfill and producing small-batch natural flock fibre as an alternative to petroleum-based synthetic materials.I co-led and instigated the FLOCC project with Sara Robertson (co-lead), directing design development and research strategy, with core partners Annika Syrjämäki (Maison du Flock, flock prototyping) and MYB Textiles (waste processing and bespoke fabric production). Additional industrial collaborators included Velutex (Spain, electrostatic flock production) and Goonvean Fibres (UK, flock testing). Studio-based experimentation combined iterative prototyping, material testing, and reflective evaluation to refine fibre properties, design approaches, and application methods. Handmade paper produced from cotton clippings was developed with the UK heritage Paper Foundation, with iterations exhibited at both Milan Design Week 2025 and Future Fabrics Expo 2025.Flock fibre and printed fabric prototypes were first showcased at Milan Design Week 2025 via the juried WORTH Partnership platform, then at Future Fabrics Expo 2025, London (curated, peer-reviewed), and subsequently toured through Performance Days (New York, Shanghai, Munich, Portland). These platforms enabled engagement with designers, manufacturers, and academics, generating feedback that informed fibre refinement, design scaling, and presentation. A crowdfunding campaign (May–June 2025), match-funded by Creative Scotland, supported future fibre processing at scale and further design development.Iteration 1 demonstrates the technical and aesthetic potential of natural cotton flock as a circular material, transforming lace production by-products into a versatile design resource while enabling small-batch fibre production previously unavailable to designers and makers
Commercial Airline Pilots’ Stress Across the Travel Cycle: Multi-Level Stressors, Spillover Effects, and the Role of Resources
Commercial airline pilots (CAPs) are a key employee group within the travel industry who are exposed to multi-level institutional and organizational demands that impact their lived experience of stress potentially leading to accidents and incidents. This study explores CAPs’ lived experience of stress and draws on conservation of resources theory and context and travel stage frameworks to investigate unique stressors that CAPs face at different travel stages. Utilizing qualitative data from interviews with 28 CAPs combined with archival data, we surface a range of multi-level factors that impact their lived experience of stress at each travel stage. To cope with stressors, and in the absence of valuable contextual resources, CAPs utilized multiple personal resources. We additionally found evidence of significant spillover across the travel stages. Findings highlight the need to improve contextual resources available to pilots, strengthen their personal resources, and customize support to the requirements of the travel stage
How Does the Digital Economy Affect the Green Transition: The Role of Industrial Intelligence and E-Commerce
As a new economic form, the digital economy (DE) significantly impacts green development. However, the impact of the DE on green total factor productivity (GTFP) remains controversial. A two-way fixed effect model is constructed to explore the impact of DE on green development. It is found that (1) there is a U-shaped relationship rather than a positive relationship between DE and GTFP. (2) Industrial intelligence and e-commerce are essential for DE to affect GTFP. (3) The DE affects GTFP mainly by promoting efficiency progress rather than technological progress. In addition, in regions where government attention to the DE is higher than others, the DE substantially contributes to GTFP. The potential of integrating the DE and the real economy needs to be further tapped. This paper presents pertinent policy suggestions and provides new empirical evidence and valuable reference for promoting green development
Decriminalising terror: for a zemiology of counterterrorism
Over the past two decades, UK counterterrorism efforts have involved contentious legal and social measures aimed at preventing harm and increasing security. Critical scholars argue that these measures narrowly define security, risk, and harm, failing to recognise intervention itself as a potential threat to individuals and communities. Despite significant critical research, the legitimacy of the criminal justice model of counterterrorism persists in criminological scholarship. This article uses zemiology, the study of social harm, to critique contemporary counterterrorism’s impact. It employs UK counterterrorism as its case study, highlighting its ‘security first’ approach and its narrow definition of public interest. Three key arguments are advanced: first, counterterrorism is not an exceptional extension of criminal law but a form of hybrid governance; second, viewing this governance through a crime-centric lens obscures the harms of criminalisation and overlooks non-criminalised politically-motivated violence; third, examining counterterrorism through a social harm lens allows for a focus on social and racial structures, rather than state-defined categories of harm. The social harm perspective challenges the conceptualisation of terrorism as a crisis justifying exceptional measures, highlighting instead counterterrorism’s broader social impact. The zemiological approach highlights the role of law, not just as source of protection, but also as a means of repression and state violence, emphasising state accountability and providing a framework for identifying and preventing social harm. This perspective centres the broader implications of counterterrorism policies on social structures and racial dynamics, allowing for a more comprehensive understanding of security and harm
Mechanical recycling of polyamide 6 and polypropylene for automotive applications
This study investigates the mechanical recycling of polyamide 6 (PA6) from discarded fishing nets and polypropylene (PP) from automotive battery scraps and household waste for automotive applications. The mechanical properties of both materials were evaluated through tensile, impact, and thermal testing, revealing that recycled PA6 (r-PA6) and recycled PP (r-PP) can achieve mechanical performance similar to virgin materials. Recycled PA6 was reinforced with 30% glass fiber (GF), significantly enhancing its tensile strength from 70 to 170 MPa, comparable with virgin PA6's (76 MPa). Furthermore, the tensile modulus of r-PA6 increased from 7720 to 8500 MPa. Recycled PP was compounded with thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) and fillers, such as calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) and talc, improving its impact strength from 5 to 18 KJ/m2 and improving thermal stability, with a heat deflection temperature (HDT) reaching 95°C. The optimized formulations for r-PP, particularly from automotive battery scrap, achieved a melt flow index (MFI) of 12–16 g/10 min, preventing molding defects. This study highlights the importance of controlled thermal treatments, appropriate additive use, and accurate processing conditions in producing high-quality recycled polymer compounds
Design and implementation of a digital medication optimization simulation (SimMed) using healthcare simulation standards of best practiceTM (HSSOBPTM)
BackgroundMedicines optimization requires healthcare professionals to develop and maintain safe medicine management skills and work collaboratively. Early exposure to interprofessional learning is essential for nursing students to develop these competencies. In response, we developed SimMed, an interprofessional digital simulation focused on medication safety. While digital simulation is increasingly recognized as an effective educational approach, its design often lacks consistency and rigor. This paper presents the development and initial implementation of SimMed within a healthcare education setting.MethodThe Healthcare Simulation Standard of Best PracticeTM (HSSOBPTM) and Agile methodology underpinned the development, implementation, and piloting of the SimMed simulation for preregistration nursing students.ResultThe simulation was successfully developed and delivered to 130 students. It was affordable, user-friendly, and interactive. Its flexible design facilitated achieving learning objectives and enhanced student learning. Key insights included the value of using a standard framework, iterative design, and integration of user feedback.ConclusionThe application of HSSOBPTM and Agile principles supported the structured, iterative development and successful implementation of an effective and scalable simulation tool for medicines optimization education
Curated Collection: The Festival City in Event Management Research
This curated collection considers the topic of the Festival City and examines how research on this theme published in the Event Management journal has contributed to extant theory in event management and event studies. Our commentary examines the evolution of the Festival City concept over the last 25 years. Firstly, we introduce the Festival City in theoretical and practical terms. We then explore related concepts, most notably the Eventful City, which is the most prominent theme in the existing research. Our commentary continues by exploring how the research has conceptualised the Festival City; major themes emerging from the research; and contributions to theory development. We reflect upon the limitations of the present research and conclude by suggesting future research directions for the Festival City concept in Event Management
General Sparse Adversarial Attack Method for SAR Images Based on Keypoints
With the continuous development of deep learning in the field of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image processing, it is found that image recognition is vulnerable to interference and the accuracy is greatly reduced. Therefore, if a general adversarial attack method is designed to generate adversarial examples capable of deceiving different types of convolutional neural network models, it can protect target images from being correctly recognized by adversaries and safeguard image privacy information. However, most of the current adversarial attack methods have too large attack scope and interference intensity, and do not have the ability to universally attack different neural network models, resulting in poor concealment, deception, and transfer deception of adversarial attacks. In this article, we propose a general keypoints sparse attack (KPSA) method for SAR images, which achieves excellent deception and transfer deception while controlling the attack range and jamming strength. It is a general and efficient adversarial attack method. KPSA uses the generator to generate intensity interference images and imposes amplitude constraint, uses the keypoints extraction method to generate position interference images to realize sparse attack, uses the difference value loss function to achieve fast convergence of the training model, and achieves transfer deception performance without depending on the type of discriminator. The deception rate and transfer deception rate experiments were conducted on man portable surveillance and target acquisition radar (MSTAR) and automatic target recognition network-surveillance and target acquisition radar (ATRNet-STAR). By comparing with the advanced methods in the field of adversarial attacks, it was verified that the KPSA method is superior to the current advanced methods, and it was confirmed that the KPSA method has application value in various complex practical scenarios
