Impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on audiology service delivery: Observational study of the role of social media in patient communication

    Get PDF
The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted an era in hearing health care that necessitates a comprehensive rethinking of audiology service delivery. There has been a significant increase in the number of individuals with hearing loss who seek information online. An estimated 430 million individuals worldwide suffer from hearing loss, including 11 million in the United Kingdom. The objective of this study was to identify National Health Service (NHS) audiology service social media posts and understand how they were used to communicate service changes within audiology departments at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Facebook and Twitter posts relating to audiology were extracted over a six week period (March 23 to April 30 2020) from the United Kingdom. We manually filtered the posts to remove those not directly linked to NHS audiology service communication. The extracted data was then geospatially mapped, and themes of interest were identified via a manual review. We also calculated interactions (likes, shares, comments) per post to determine the posts’ efficacy. A total of 981 Facebook and 291 Twitter posts were initially mined using our keywords, and following filtration, 174 posts related to NHS audiology change of service were included for analysis. The results were then analysed geographically, along with an assessment of the interactions and sentiment analysis within the included posts. NHS Trusts and Boards should consider incorporating and promoting social media to communicate service changes. Users would be notified of service modifications in real-time, and different modalities could be used (e.g. videos), resulting in a more efficient service

Work readiness of student nurses voluntarily supporting NHS during COVID-19 pandemic: A mixed methods investigation into students' experiences

    Get PDF
Background: Transition from education to the workforce has been recognised as difficult and linked to 'reality shock.' Due to the unprecedented circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, many student nurses opted in for NHS emergency placements and prematurely transitioned to the workplace, which calls for an in-depth investigation of the work readiness and transition experiences of this cohort. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate self-perceived work readiness, the effectiveness of support provided by the universities and the NHS as well as explore the experiences of student nurses who responded to the COVID-19 crisis to understand the impact of this early transition to the clinical workforce. Design: A mixed methods study was conducted. It included two stages: (1) an online survey consisting of a work readiness questionnaire and close- and open-ended questions about received support; and (2) online semi-structured interviews that were thematically analysed. Methods: Participants were nursing students from Scottish universities who took on emergency NHS placements. Thirty-three (30 females and 3 males) participants completed the survey and 8 of them (all female) participated in semi-structured interviews. The Work Readiness Scale for graduate nurses along with questions about the support received were completed in the first stage of the study. Results: Organisational acumen was perceived by participants as higher than social intelligence, work competence and personal work characteristics. Three superordinate themes emerged: (1) participants expressed appreciation of and need for coordination of support from the university and the NHS as a key factor in easing into their role; (2) they indicated the sense of obligation as the key driver for taking up this placement; (3) placement was seen as an opportunity to understand their role and develop their professional identity. Conclusions: The findings found the importance of support from the clinical placement and academic teams to help with the integration and application of theory into practice

    Lateral Torsional Buckling

Lateral torsional instability occurs when a beam’s compression face is not fully restrained against lateral movement and its relative slenderness is high. The beam may fail by deflecting sideways and twisting about its longitudinal axis; this failure mode is called lateral torsional buckling

The Kuril Islands Dispute: A Legal and Historical Analysis as Seen from the Japanese Perspective

    Get PDF
This article presents the Japanese legal and historical perspective on the Kuril Islands dispute. Undoubtedly, the conflict between Japan and Russia about this group of islands north of Hokkaidō is one of the most significant territorial issues in present-day international relations. Despite many attempts to find a middle ground, the dispute has not been resolved in over sixty-eight years. It also affects the diplomatic stalemate, namely the unsettled question of a peace treaty between Tokyo and Moscow. Successive Japanese cabinets have claimed that the southern part of the Kuril Islands (called the “Northern Territory” in Japanese) has been illegally occupied by Russia since the end of the Pacific War. To comprehend this statement and thus understand the Japanese position, it is necessary to analyse the Japanese arguments based on legal acts, historical documents, and research.Since the article only outlines the Japanese perspective on this matter, the geographical terminology used is from Japanese, in order to comprehensively introduce the position of that side

    Eurocode 5: Design Principles

    No full text
The Eurocode System introduced a design philosophy called Limit State Design. Structures are assessed at the service or working load condition, i.e. states beyond which the structure will no longer satisfy performance. Introducing Limit State Design facilitates both everyday design as well as innovative, more complex design scenarios without being too onerous

Gender Balance on State Boards in Ireland: To the Forefront of Progress or Concealing the Status Quo?

    Get PDF
In this article, we examine female appointments to government-owned corporations, called State Sponsored Boards (SSBs), in Ireland over a twenty-eight-year period, to analyze the extent to which gender parity has been achieved using voluntary gender targets. Using data from thirty-four SSBs, we found that overall figures relating to the achievement of gender parity on SSBs are masking the reality of female representation on these boards. We have demonstrated that the high concentration of females on particular boards is increasing the overall average gender representation figures, and as a result, a high proportion of boards are not meeting their gender targets. This research provides evidence of the importance of taking a more nuanced approach to examining gender diversity on boards as a whole

The collaboration dilemma in smart city projects: Time to ask the right questions

    Get PDF
This Connexions article links collaboration in smart city projects, a contemporary and undertheorised social challenge, with theories on assemblage thinking, organisation, and public value creation. Using this multidisciplinary lens, we critically analyse smart city theory and expose the inability of prevailing collaborative models to properly account for the complexities of real-world practices. Building on our observations, we formulate a new and more robust theoretical perspective on smart city collaboration, which helps us trigger new research questions that focus on procedural, relational and diversity factors previously ignored

PointNu-Net: Keypoint-Assisted Convolutional Neural Network for Simultaneous Multi-Tissue Histology Nuclei Segmentation and Classification

    Get PDF
Automatic nuclei segmentation and classification play a vital role in digital pathology. However, previous works are mostly built on data with limited diversity and small sizes, making the results questionable or misleading in actual downstream tasks. In this article, we aim to build a reliable and robust method capable of dealing with data from the ‘the clinical wild’. Specifically, we study and design a new method to simultaneously detect, segment, and classify nuclei from Haematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) stained histopathology data, and evaluate our approach using the recent largest dataset: PanNuke. We address the detection and classification of each nuclei as a novel semantic keypoint estimation problem to determine the center point of each nuclei. Next, the corresponding class-agnostic masks for nuclei center points are obtained using dynamic instance segmentation. Meanwhile, we proposed a novel Joint Pyramid Fusion Module (JPFM) to model the cross-scale dependencies, thus enhancing the local feature for better nuclei detection and classification. By decoupling two simultaneous challenging tasks and taking advantage of JPFM, our method can benefit from class-aware detection and class-agnostic segmentation, thus leading to a significant performance boost. We demonstrate the superior performance of our proposed approach for nuclei segmentation and classification across 19 different tissue types, delivering new benchmark results
