    Re-configuring the jigsaw puzzle: Balancing time, pace, place and space of work in the Covid-19 era

    Drawing on the principles of Conservation of Resources (COR) theory and the Work–Home Resources (W-HR) model, this research captured the lived experiences of 19 parents from across Scotland during and after the Covid-19 pandemic. The data were derived initially from two digital interviews per participant, with interview content in both cases informed by preceding questionnaires. A third phase of interviews was conducted post the pandemic. Findings revealed that while participants valued increased flexibility gained through enforced home working, this often led to feelings of guilt, working longer hours and perceived work intensification. Work–home conflict emerged as a source of tension, dependent upon social and relational interactions, and physical and shared spaces at home. The authors analyse these issues in the context of job crafting as a means of organising the jigsaw pieces of work–home conflict as participants transitioned to a ‘new normal’. In conclusion they examine the implications and suggest avenues for further research

    Climate theory & managerial decisions on cross-border mergers

    We explore the significance of climate theory concerning managerial decisions in cross-border mergers. We report that temperature offers a good familiarity proxy showing that country pairs that experience little (large) distance in temperature experience relatively more (less) acquisitions. A one-unit decrease in the difference of the temperature in a country pair is linked with an increase in the number of cross-border mergers by 1.09%. We then highlight the significance of relatively warm temperatures on managerial decisions: We find that (i) the relationship is driven by the Summer months; during June-August for country pairs in the Northern hemisphere and December-February for pairs in the Southern hemisphere, (ii) relatively more cross-border mergers occur towards countries with modestly warmer temperatures showing evidence of managerial affinity towards warmer places, and (iii) country pairs with relatively high temperatures exhibit more acquisitions. Overall, this study highlights a new perspective in the field of climate finance

    A blue carbon model for the European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) and its application in environmental restoration

    1. Historically, considerations of the carbon budget of bivalve shellfish have disproportionately focused on the cycling of carbon in shell alone, overlooking respiratory release and the potential role of bivalve shellfish habitats in the stabilization of sediment, and therefore of carbon. 2. Data on carbon cycling are key to providing essential evidence to inform evaluation of management strategies and the business case for restoration of European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) habitats. The purpose of this study was to examine the flat oyster carbon budget at the scale of the individual and to set out a framework to enable future comparisons of carbon budgets between ecosystems. 3. Through the combination of previously established work with measurements of calcification and respiration both in situ and ex situ, a carbon budget at the scale of a single oyster was determined. 4. In consideration of the flat oyster carbon budget, the inclusion of the deposition of sedimentary carbon, as well as carbon stored in shell, balanced with the release of carbon through respiration and calcification suggests that these habitats are unlikely to be significant carbon sinks in the context of global climate change mitigation. However, the recovery of flat oyster beds is likely to facilitate the accretion of substantial carbon stocks that are nevertheless important in conservation management

    The Acceptability of post-stroke cognitive testing through the lens of the theory of acceptability, a qualitative study

    Background Cognitive impairment is common after stroke and screening is recommended. However, there is a lack of evidence on the best way to assess cognition after stroke and a tendency to focus on the clinician rather than stroke survivor. The Theoretical Framework of Acceptability (TFA) was developed to better understand the factors that contribute to the acceptability of healthcare interventions from the patient perspective. We aimed to explore the acceptability of post-stroke cognitive assessment from the stroke survivor perspective, using the TFA as a lens. Methods We analysed interviews conducted with people admitted to hospital after stroke. Inclusion criteria: ≥18 years, able to provide informed consent. Semi-structured interviews were conducted 1–3 weeks after discharge from hospital in the participant's home to explore the experience of cognitive assessment in hospital. Interviews were audio recorded and transcribed verbatim. Data were analysed using framework analysis, with a framework underpinned by the TFA. Results Of the 13 participants interviewed, 8 were male, 6 lived in the most deprived SIMD quintile. Ages were 62–84 years. Five themes were identified that describe the factors that influence acceptability of cognitive screening from the patient perspective: (1) participation motives; (2) trust in health professionals; (3) perceived risks of harm; (4) information provision; (5) burden of testing. Conclusion Clinical teams should be confident that stroke survivors expect cognitive testing and understand its rational. However, the provision of information and results of cognitive testing should be person-centred

    ML applications proliferate across various sectors. Large internet firms employ ML to train intelligent models using vast datasets, including sensitive user information. However, new regulations like GDPR require data removal by businesses. Deleting data from ML models is more complex than databases. Machine Un-learning (MUL), an emerging field, garners academic interest for selectively erasing learned data from ML models. MUL benefits multiple disciplines, enhancing privacy, security, usability, and accuracy. This article reviews MUL’s significance, providing a taxonomy and summarizing key MUL algorithms. We categorize modern MUL models by criteria, including model independence, data driven, and implementation considerations. We explore MUL applications in smart devices and recommendation systems. We also identify open questions and future research areas. This work advances methods for implementing regulations like GDPR and safeguarding user privacy

    Investigation of brain response to acquisition and learning the second languages based on EEG signals and machine learning techniques

    Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) and neurolinguistics have become vital areas of scientific inquiry, focusing on neural mechanisms in language acquisition. While studies have examined brain activity during language learning, there’s a need for validated data on cognitive and functional effects of acquiring new languages, especially Arabic and Hindi. This study addresses this gap by recording and analyzing EEG data related to learning Arabic and Hindi as second languages, comparing linguistic differences during the process. EEG signals were recorded from eight participants (four Indian, four Yemeni) as they learned words in Arabic and Hindi. The data was pre-processed, cleaned, and analyzed to extract language learning-related features. To validate the approach and demonstrate cognitive and functional differences in brain activity during second language acquisition, various machine learning classification models were applied: Random Forest, Support Vector Machine, Decision Tree, Xgboost, and Catboost. The classifiers were trained and tested on the extracted features, achieving the following accuracies: RF 71.62%, SVM 68.41%, DT 64.12%, Xgboost 72.17%, and Catboost 74.56%. These results provide insights into neural mechanisms underlying second language acquisition. By comparing brain activity patterns between Arabic and Hindi, this study contributes to neurolinguistics and offers data that can be used to develop more effective language learning strategies and interventions
