    Monitoring SARS-CoV-2 in Wastewater During New York City\u27s Second Wave of COVID-19: Sewershed-level Trends and Relationships to Publicly Available Clinical Testing Data

    New York City\u27s wastewater monitoring program tracked trends in sewershed-level SARS-CoV-2 loads starting in the fall of 2020, just before the start of the city\u27s second wave of the COVID-19 outbreak. During a five-month study period, from November 8, 2020 to April 11, 2021, viral loads in influent wastewater from each of New York City\u27s 14 wastewater treatment plants were measured and compared to new laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases for the populations in each corresponding sewershed, estimated from publicly available clinical testing data. We found significant positive correlations between viral loads in wastewater and new COVID-19 cases. The strength of the correlations varied depending on the sewershed, with Spearman\u27s rank correlation coefficients ranging between 0.38 and 0.81 (mean = 0.55). Based on a linear regression analysis of a combined data set for New York City, we found that a 1 log10 change in the SARS-CoV-2 viral load in wastewater corresponded to a 0.6 log10 change in the number of new laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases per day in a sewershed. An estimated minimum detectable case rate between 2–8 cases per day/100 000 people was associated with the method limit of detection in wastewater. This work offers a preliminary assessment of the relationship between wastewater monitoring data and clinical testing data in New York City. While routine monitoring and method optimization continue, information on the development of New York City\u27s wastewater monitoring program may provide insights for similar wastewater-based epidemiology efforts in the future

    The teaching of texts in translation has become an increasingly common practice, but so too has the teaching of texts from languages and cultures with which the instructor may have little or no familiarity. The authors in this volume present a variety of pedagogical approaches to promote translation literacy and to address the distinct phenomenology of translated texts. The approaches set forward in this volume address the nature of the translator’s task and how texts travel across linguistic and cultural boundaries in translation, including how they are packaged for new audiences, with the aim of fostering critical reading practices that focus on translations as translations. The organizing principle of the book is the specific pedagogical contexts in which translated texts are being used, such as courses on a single work, survey courses on a single national literature or a single author, and courses on world literature. Examples are provided from the widest possible variety of world languages and literary traditions, as well as modes of writing (prose, poetry, drama, film, and religious and historical texts) with the aim that many of the pedagogical approaches and strategies can be easily adapted for use with other works and traditions. An introductory section by the editors, Brian James Baer and Michelle Woods, sets the theoretical stage for the volume.     Just What the Doctor Ordered: Effects of Humility on Medical Adherence

    Humble people are open to new information, are other-focused, and hold egalitarian beliefs. This project will investigate whether humble people are more likely to be adherent to medical advice. Study 1 will examine trait humility, using the Honest-Humility subscale of the HEXACO and the General Medication Adherence Scale (GMAS). Study 2 will examine whether increasing a person’s state humility affects adherence intentions. Participants will be given a health screening survey and will be told that they have a fictitious disease called thioamine acetlyase (TAA) deficiency. A modified GMAS will measure their adherence intention to treatment of this disease. In Study 1, we expect a positive relationship with higher trait humility correlating with higher adherence. In Study 2, we expect the experimental group to have higher humility scores and higher adherence intentions to pursue treatment. Overall, the findings will provide a better understanding of how people’s humility may affect their health

    Turnover Contagion: Trust and the Compounding Impact of Turnover on Teachers

    Teacher turnover is high in US public schools, and it is growing. Such turnover has academic and financial costs, but little is known about the impact on teachers themselves. How do teachers experience turnover? Using interviews of departed teachers and focus groups of new and veteran teachers, this qualitative multi-site case study examines how teachers at a so-called “no-excuses” Charter Management Organization (CMO) experience and respond to high turnover. Findings reveal that teachers experience considerable strain as a result of high levels of turnover due to increased demand on their expertise and diminished trust.     Rivers As International Borders: A Comparison of How Social-Political Factors Have Impacted Natural Resources in the Usumacinta River Basin and Rio Grande River Basin Within the Context of Climate Change

    Along transboundary river borders in North and Central America social-political factors such as conservation, militarization, and migration impact natural resources leaving the United States, Mexico, and Guatemala at risk of ecological decline due to the changing climate. I present a qualitative case study comparing the social-political factors and their impact on natural resources in the Usumacinta River Basin (URB) and Rio Grande River Basin (RGRB). A comprehensive evaluation of social-political factors is performed starting from the 19th century to the current era. I contribute to the field of environmental sociology by extending Laako and Kauffer’s (2022) work on eco-frontiers of the URB into the RGRB. This sets the stage for comparison of how conservation, militarization, and migration have contributed to impacts on natural resources within both basins. This comparison reveals that impacts on natural resources increases migration rates, leading to increases in border militarization and diminishment of conservation efforts

    Dark Web Analytics : A Comparative Study of Feature Selection and Prediction Algorithms

    The value and size of information exchanged through dark-web pages are remarkable. Recently Many researches showed values and interests in using machine-learning methods to extract security-related useful knowledge from those dark-web pages. In this scope, our goals in this research focus on evaluating best prediction models while analyzing traffic level data coming from the dark web. Results and analysis showed that feature selection played an important role when trying to identify the best models. Sometimes the right combination of features would increase the model’s accuracy. For some feature set and classifier combinations, the Src Port and Dst Port both proved to be important features. When available, they were always selected over most other features. When absent, it resulted in many other features being selected to compensate for the information they provided. The Protocol feature was never selected as a feature, regardless of whether Src Port and Dst Port were available
