    Measuring the Contributions of Perceptual and Attentional Processes in the Complete Composite Face Paradigm

    Theories of holistic face processing vary widely with respect to conceptualizations, paradigms, and stimuli. These divergences have left several theoretical questions unresolved. Namely, the role of attention in face perception is understudied. To rectify this gap in the literature, we combined the complete composite face task (allowing for predictions of multiple theoretical conceptualizations and connecting with a large body of research) with a secondary auditory discrimination task at encoding (to avoid a visual perceptual bottleneck). Participants studied upright, intact faces within a continuous recognition paradigm, which intermixes study and test trials at multiple retention intervals. Within subjects, participants studied faces under full or divided attention. Test faces varied with respect to alignment, congruence, and retention intervals. Overall, we observed the predicted beneficial outcomes of holistic processing (e.g., higher discriminability for Congruent, Aligned faces relative to Congruent, Misaligned faces) that persisted across retention intervals and attention. However, we did not observe the predicted detrimental outcomes of holistic processing (e.g., higher discriminability for Incongruent, Misaligned faces relative to Incongruent, Aligned faces). Because the continuous recognition paradigm exerts particularly strong demands on attention, we interpret these findings through the lens of resource dependency and domain specificity

    U2-Net: A Very-Deep Convolutional Neural Network for Detecting Distracted Drivers

    In recent years, the number of deaths and injuries resulting from traffic accidents has been increasing dramatically all over the world due to distracted drivers. Thus, a key element in developing intelligent vehicles and safe roads is monitoring driver behaviors. In this paper, we modify and extend the U-net convolutional neural network so that it provides deep layers to represent image features and yields more precise classification results. It is the basis of a very deep convolution neural network, called U2-net, to detect distracted drivers. The U2-net model has two paths (contracting and expanding) in addition to a fully-connected dense layer. The contracting path is used to extract the context around the objects to provide better object representation while the symmetric expanding path enables precise localization. The motivation behind this model is that it provides precise object features to provide a better object representation and classification. We used two public datasets: MI-AUC and State Farm, to evaluate the U2 model in detecting distracted driving. The accuracy of U2-net on MI-AUC and State Farm is 98.34 % and 99.64%, respectively. These evaluation results show higher accuracy than achieved by many other state-of-the-art methods

    The murders of James Bryd. Jr, Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, and Sandra Bland led to the Black Lives Matter movement. Following these deaths, schools across the country that were named after Confederates and statues of them were taken down, causing backlash against more substantial steps to address white supremacy in the curriculum. This qualitative study investigates how social studies teachers are reacting to laws that restrict the teaching of history and deny Texas students the right to be represented in their education. The findings demonstrate a link between teachers’ understanding of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy and their solidarity with students of color. Through this lack of understanding, teachers in turn have a fear to teach students histories. This has little to do with a law stopping them, and more with a lack of understanding a key methodological approach to helping students gain agency in their learning

    Enhanced Convolutional Neural Network for Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Classification

    Lung cancer is a common type of cancer that causes death if not detectedearly enough. Doctors use computed tomography (CT) images to diagnoselung cancer. The accuracy of the diagnosis relies highly on the doctor\u27sexpertise. Recently, clinical decision support systems based on deep learningvaluable recommendations to doctors in their diagnoses. In this paper, wepresent several deep learning models to detect non-small cell lung cancer inCT images and differentiate its main subtypes namely adenocarcinoma,large cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. We adopted standardconvolutional neural networks (CNN), visual geometry group-16 (VGG16),and VGG19. Besides, we introduce a variant of the CNN that is augmentedwith convolutional block attention modules (CBAM). CBAM aims to extractinformative features by combining cross-channel and spatial information.We also propose variants of VGG16 and VGG19 that utilize a supportvector machine (SVM) at the classification layer instead of SoftMax. Wevalidated all models in this study through extensive experiments on a CTlung cancer dataset. Experimental results show that supplementing CNNwith CBAM leads to consistent improvements over vanilla CNN. Resultsalso show that the VGG variants that use the SVM classifier outperform theoriginal VGGs by a significant margin

    For several decades, Chicanx and Indigenous theatermakers have been repurposing Shakespeare’s plays to reflect the histories and lived realities of the US–Mexico Borderlands and to create space to tell stories of and for La Frontera. Celebrating this rich tradition, The Bard in the Borderlands: An Anthology of Shakespeare Appropriations en La Frontera brings a wide range of Borderlands Shakespeare plays together for the first time in a multi-volume open-access scholarly edition. This anthology celebrates the dynamic, multilingual reworking of canon and place that defines Borderlands Shakespeare, and it situates these geographically and temporally diverse plays within the robust study of Shakespeare’s global afterlives. The editors offer a critical framework for understanding the artistic and political traditions that shape these plays and the place of Shakespeare within the multilayered colonial histories of the region.
