A QUALITATIVE STUDY OF THE IMPACT OF RACIAL SEGREGATION ON THE SCHOOLING OF ONE AFRICAN AMERICAN FAMILY
This qualitative case study examines the impact of social, economic, and racial biases, that Black students experienced in the United States public school system, focusing on the author\u27s three generational journey. The author\u27s experience highlights the challenges of racialized residential segregation stemming from city-wide redlining practices in New Orleans, which kept Black people geographically isolated from employment opportunities and exposed them to risks to their well-being, crime, and violence (Bloom, 2014; Englund, 2022; Platt, 2019; Seicshnaydre et al.,2018). Despite the tremendous progress made by the Civil Rights Movement and federal and state policies aimed at addressing these inequalities, housing segregation and, by extension, de facto segregation in schooling continue to impact the educational opportunities of Black families. This study tells the story of three generations, all from the same family, who attended the New Orleans Public Schools system and how redlining practices shaped their educational journey
Back to the Basics: Reference Guides Every Research Admin Should Know
For research administrators, understanding the key reference guides, federal frameworks, and day-to-day responsibilities tied to these areas is non-negotiable. This list of resources brings you back to basics—not as a refresher, but as a toolbox for mastering compliance, supporting investigators, and fostering a culture of responsible conduct in research
The Road to Licensure of Behavior Analysts in Texas: History and Lessons Learned
In over 30 US states since early this century, behavior analysts have worked for months and years to secure laws to license behavior analysts. At present, very few published accounts exist to document those efforts and to provide models and recommendations for behavior analysts who are interested in advocating for licensure or some form of governmental regulation of behavior analysts. Many are well-prepared in behavior analysis but have little preparation for dealing effectively with the contingencies and procedures involved in making public policies. We provide an account of the extended, complicated efforts by behavior analysts in one state that culminated in establishment of state licensure of behavior analysts. Key activities described here include foundational organizational work by a state behavior analysis organization, preliminary licensure efforts, educating behavior analysts on public policy advocacy, establishing relationships with legislators and their staff as well as government regulatory agency personnel, developing of important alliances with various stakeholders, and review of final successful efforts. Successful efforts and lessons learned are reviewed
Using AI for Video Tracking of Free Flying Honey Bees
A common challenge for studying behavior of organisms in naturalistic settings is tracking and counting individuals in videos of a behavior of interest. For humans, this is a labor intensive task, but recent advances in AI hold new promise for effectively automating data analysis from videos. Honey bees have emerged as an important model in understanding a wide variety of behaviors, including navigation, foraging selection, and learning. Video of free flying bees visiting a target often features many individual bees moving at the same time and bees clustering together making manual counting difficult. For this project, video data of an experiment using free-flying honey bees will be analyzed using newly developed AI software tools to show the feasibility of this new technology for enhancing biological research
Eyes, Nose or Personality? How Different Descriptions Influence Facial Memory and Confidence Levels.
Some eyewitnesses only get a fleeting glance of the perpetrator’s face before describing it to police and identifying that person from a lineup. 120 participants viewed a series of faces, one at a time, and performed a task after each face was removed from the screen. We included one between-participants factor of encoding task (featural description, trait description, or counting) and one within-participants factor of encoding duration (2 vs. 6 s). Then, participants completed a self-paced recognition test by providing a yes/no recognition decision and confidence judgment (1 “not at all confident” to 3 “very confident”) for 48 faces (24 studied, 24 new). Trait descriptions improved accuracy at 2s, whereas featural descriptions improved accuracy at 6s. Confidence ratings varied by task but showed no interaction with duration. Understanding how encoding tasks and durations influence memory can inform best practices for eliciting eyewitness descriptions and designing training protocols for law enforcement
Understanding Seasonal Shifts In The Chemistry of Nueces and Sabinal Rivers
This study examines the characteristics of seasonal changes in surface water parameters for two rivers in south central Texas: the Nueces River and the Sabinal River. In the winter of 2024, the Nueces River exhibited lower temperatures and relatively lower conductivity, whereas the Sabinal River showed slightly higher conductivity despite lower temperatures. In the summer of 2024, the Nueces River showed a temperature rise, lowered pH but higher conductivity levels. In the fall of 2024, the Sabinal River demonstrated a noticeable increase in temperature and conductivity. The observed changes over seasons in surface water systems could indicate increased ion dissolution, potential runoff, possible dilution effects, anthropogenic influence and rock-water interactions
Weapon Focus Effect on a Hispanic/Latinx Population
The effects of misidentification of an innocent person can be catastrophic. Their life can be altered for decades, sending them to prison or being sentenced to death for a crime that they did not commit. The Carlos DeLuna case is an example of this and how system variables (line-up types and foil presentation), and estimator variables (lighting and distance) influence eyewitness memory. Two major estimator variables investigated in the current study include WFE and race-ethnic stereotypes and their effects on line-up task performance and the possible influence of cultural differences. Participants will view a one-minute mock crime with either a Hispanic/Latino or a White non-Hispanic perpetrator, using a weapon or no weapon, wearing stereotype or non-stereotype clothing (partial replication of Pickel et al (2017). We predict that false alarm rates will be greater for white perpetrator conditions, and higher rates of correct rejection and correct identification in Hispanic conditions
Biogeochemical Investigation of Groundwater-Surface Water Interaction in a Karst System: Case of the Edwards Aquifer, South-Central Texas, USA
Groundwater-surface water interactions in karst systems play a critical role in regional water resources, yet their dynamics remain complex and site-specific. This study investigates the biogeochemical characteristics of groundwater and surface water within the Edwards Aquifer, South-Central Texas, to assess connectivity, recharge mechanisms, and geochemical evolution. Major ion chemistry, trace elements, were analyzed to distinguish water sources and mixing processes. Results indicate significant seasonal variations in geochemical parameters, reflecting rapid recharge and dynamic exchange between groundwater and surface water. Anthropogenic influences, such as urbanization and agricultural activities, also impact water quality. These findings enhance the understanding of hydrological processes in karst aquifers and provide critical insights for sustainable water management in the region
Hispanic Vote Share
The presentation I would like to demonstrate explains the importance of the Hispanic vote in The United States for The Republican Party. It illustrates the continuous increase of Hispanic votes for Donald Trump, leaving behind the question, why do Hispanics vote for Donald Trump?. Given the idea that President Trump is enforcing new and stronger immigration policies that can potentially affect their families. The presentation focuses on the increase of Hispanic voting for president Trump from past elections, and why the other parties were not a potential fit. In addition, what rhetoric initiative does Trump use for the Hispanic vote? What effect will the Hispanic vote have on the review process of the Republican Party in the United States? My ultimate goal with my presentation is to have the audience think about the questions I present and understand the awareness of the Hispanic vote for President Donald Trump
