    No full text
This study explores the interconnected relationships between sleep quality, anxiety levels, and physical activity, aiming to understand how these factors influence each other and overall well-being. PURPOSE: to investigate sleep, anxiety, and physical activity levels in order determine the relationship between these variables. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Participants completed a survey about their physical activity levels, anxiety, and sleep quality. In addition to these variables, participants also reported their height, weight, and age. RESULTS: There was a negative correlation between physical activity and anxiety (r = -0.10), a positive correlation between anxiety and sleep quality (r = 0.30), and a negative correlation between physical activity and sleep quality (r = -0.36). CONCLUSION: Regular physical activity is weakly correlated with improved sleep quality but not anxiety

Does Cohabitation Corrupt Future Relationships? A study of conflict, personality, and spirituality

    No full text
Cohabitation prior to marriage has become more common recently. Knowing whether cohabitation improves relationships would be helpful to couples considering this arrangement. Given the lack of research on LGBTQ cohabitation post Obergefell v Hodges, there is a need to confirm previous findings on cohabitation (Gatzeva & Paik, 2011) and successful conflict resolution styles and personality traits (Tehrani & Yamini, 2020), and if they apply to LGBTQ couples in the same way. Ninety participants completed the Mini IPIP (Donnellan et al., 2006), The Romantic Partner Conflict Scale (Zachilli et al., 2009), and the Dimensions of Religiosity scale (Joseph & Diduca, 2007), and we expected compatible conflict resolution styles would lead to greater relationship satisfaction. Interactional Reactivity, a negative style, did predict negative relationship outcomes in cohabiters, F (1, 54) = 5.72, p=.02. We are also analyzing differences between heterosexual and LGBTQ relationships, and results will be available before the conference

A New Approach to ESL: Implementing Science of Reading Strategies in Middle School

    No full text
Learning English can present challenges for emergent bilingual (EB) students, who must both master the language and develop literacy skills. Unfortunately, middle school EBs receive less structured literacy support than their elementary counterparts leading to lower reading scores and wider achievement gaps as reflected on state exams. Many ESL programs struggle to provide effective instruction due to underfunding and curricula often not written with EB’s in mind, (Council of the Great City Schools, 2023), leaving these students at a disadvantage academically. This study looks at how incorporating Science of Reading (SoR) strategies into middle school ESL classrooms could potentially improve literacy outcomes for EBs. Research has shown that SoRs focus on phonics, decoding, and phonemic awareness- components overlooked in the secondary grades- help multilingual learners build stronger reading abilities (August & Shanahan, 2006; Ehri, 2020). By combining SoR techniques with content-based language instruction, along with translanguaging theories, this research aims to help close the achievement gap by finding a more effective way to help teach ESL classes so that EBs can reach their full academic potential

Exploring Blackfly Ecology in Texas: Population Trends, Habitat Variation, and Future Research Directions

    No full text
Blackflies (Simuliidae) are blood feeding insects that serve as vectors for various diseases affecting humans and animals. Despite extensive research on other disease vectors, blackflies remain understudied in Texas. This study aimed to characterize the diversity, temporal distribution, and larval environments of blackflies in San Antonio, Texas. We collected larval and adult blackflies from two populations over one year, and found that both populations peaked in winter, contrary to findings in other studies, and that the primary species was Simulium mediovittatum. Water quality testing revealed significant differences in nitrite, nitrate, and sulfate concentrations between the two larval sites; the difference in physiochemical properties between habitats suggests that they could serve as field sites for evaluating the effect of larval habitats on blackfly biology. This and future studies will contribute to our understanding of blackflies and the role the environment may play in disease transmission, vector competency, and in population management

Supporting Preschool Children with Concussions or Traumatic Brain Injuries in Early Childhood Classrooms

    No full text
This manuscript provides information about how to support young children who sustain concussions or traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) in their classrooms. A description of concussion or TBI symptoms, ways of communication with young children, classroom accommodations, and parental support are presented. The concussion signs and symptoms in children are slightly different from those of adults. When talking about these symptoms with preschoolers, it is essential to use simple, straightforward, and gentle language. Three main classroom accommodations are recommended including reducing physical activities, simplifying cognitive tasks, and creating a restful, calm environment. Resources for parent support are also provided to inform parents of what to expect and where to get help when a concussion/TBI occurs. The purpose of this paper is to increase the awareness of concussions and TBIs in young children and to equip teachers with practical knowledge in working with these children and their families, resulting in the teachers’ timely and efficient responses when concussions occur

Why Jerk Bosses Stress Us: Burnout as an Evolved Appeasement Strategy

    No full text
Burnout is a pandemic and costly public health problem. Studies link leadership and peer behavior to burnout, but explanations are constrained to proximate mechanisms. Evolutionary models describe depression as an ancient appeasement response to avert dangerous physical conflict with higher-ranking group members and coalitions. In turn, psychometric research consistently finds high construct overlap between burnout and depression. This shared phenomenology suggests that burnout in response to workplace social stressors reflects appeasement. The purpose of the current study is to test the relationship between rank and competition related variables and burnout

Gender-Based Violence in the Northern Triangle of Central America

    No full text
In recent years, the Northern Triangle of Central America, comprising the countries of El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala, has seen the highest exodus of its population since the Cold War. Although there are many push factors that drive emigration, gender-based violence has emerged as a critical issue in there region with many fleeing to seek refuge in countries that secure their safety. Gender-based violence is defined as “a host of harmful behaviors that are directed at women and girls because of their sex, including wife abuse, sexual assault, murder, rape, forced prostitution, genital mutilation and sexual abuse. Specifically, violence against women includes any act of verbal or physical force, coercion , or life-threatening deprivation. Going beyond physical harm, gender-based violence impacts on migration raises many questions

Future Shaping Factors: Stress, Optimism, and Career Aspirations in Hispanic Serving Institutions

    No full text
Understanding the development of career aspirations is vital, particularly for students in Hispanic Majority Institutions (HMIs). We collected online measures of belonging, stress, optimism, and career aspiration among undergraduates attending an HMI to explore these relationships. Our explanatory framework revealed that acceptance was significantly positively correlated with career aspirations relating to achievement, leadership, and education. In contrast, rejection was negatively associated with lower career aspirations. Serial mediation models confirmed that stress and optimism significantly mediate effects of belongingness on career aspirations, where optimism plays a role in maintaining resilience and motivation to strive for long-term goals. Our study underscores the important role of surrounding students in an inclusive and supportive academic environment to promote student career aspirations at HMIs
