Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) is not detected in the vagina: A prospective study
Objective To determine whether severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is present in the vagina of women diagnosed with coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pneumonia. Study design The study was conducted prospectively in a university affiliated hospital. Forty-one women of reproductive age whose nasopharyngeal PCR test were positive for SARS-CoV-2 and clinically diagnosed with pneumonia were included in the study. Vaginal swabs were obtained for SARS-CoV-2 PCR tests when the patients were admitted to the inpatient service before pneumonia treatment was initiated. Results Vaginal swab samples of 38 patients were analysed with SARS-CoV-2 PCR tests. None of the vaginal swabs were positive for SARS-CoV-2. Conclusions SARS-CoV-2 does not infect the vagina of women diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia.9SEP 301
Effect of Web-Based Training on Complication Control and Quality of Life of Spinal Cord Damaged Individuals: Randomized Controlled Trial
Objective: This study was conducted to determine the effect of web-based training on complication control and quality of life of spinal cord-injured patients. Methods: A pre-test-post-test, experimental study including a control group. A total of 62 men participated from two different physical therapy and rehabilitation hospitals. The training, monitoring, and data collection steps were provided via a webpage (www.omurgahemsirelikegitim. com) and telephone. Results: It was determined that there was a statistically significant difference between the experimental and control groups regarding the complications related to respiration, circulation, gastrointestinal, urinary, and musculoskeletal systems. Regarding the complications related to sexual life, comparing experimental and control groups the pre and post evaluations, detected an increase in difficulty in sexual life after the injury both experimental and control groups. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of quality of life scale subscale scores. Conclusion: These results show that telephone monitoring plus web-based training is effective in controlling disease complications in patients with spinal cord injury. However, to improve the quality of life, it is important to establish interventions involving individuals and families, and physical, social and mental health services.2JUN220-2271

The prevalence and diagnostic criteria of health-care associated infections in neonatal intensive care units in Turkey: A multicenter point- prevalence study
Background: Healthcare-acquired infections (HAIs) in the neonatal period cause substantial morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Our purpose was to determine the prevalence of HAIs, antimicrobial susceptibility of causative agents, and the adaptivity of the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) criteria in neonatal HAI diagnosis. Methods: A HAI point prevalence survey was conducted in the neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) of 31 hospitals from different geographic regions in Turkey. Results: The Point HAI prevalence was 7.6\%. Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) and central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) and late onset sepsis were predominant. The point prevalence of VAP was 2.1\%, and the point prevalence of CLABSI was 1.2\% in our study. The most common causative agents in HAIs were Gram-negative rods (43.0\%), and the most common agent was Klebsiella spp (24.6\%)81.2\% of these species were extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) (\& thorn). Blood culture positivity was seen in 33.3\% of samples taken from the umbilical venous catheter, whereas 0.9\% of samples of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) were positive. In our study, 60\% of patients who had culture positivity in endotracheal aspirate or who had purulent endotracheal secretions did not have any daily FiO2 change (p = 0.67) and also 80\% did not have any increase in positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) (p = 0.7). On the other hand, 18.1\% of patients who had clinical deterioration compatible with VAP did not have endotracheal culture positivity (p = 0.005). Conclusions: Neonatal HAIs are frequent adverse events in district and regional hospitals. This at-risk population should be prioritized for HAI surveillance and prevention programs through improved infection prevention practices, and hand hygiene compliance should be conducted. CDC diagnostic criteria are not sufficient for NICUs. Future studies are warranted for the diagnosis of HAIs in NICUs.2MAR208-2176
Hypothetical molecular interconnection between type 2 diabetes and dyslexia
Background Dyslexia is one of the most common learning disabilities, especially among children. Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disorder that affects a large population globally, with metabolic disorders. There have been several genes that are identified as causes of Dyslexia, and in recent studies, it has been found out that some of those genes are also involved in several metabolic pathways. For several years, it has been known that type 2 diabetes causes several neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. Furthermore, in several studies, it was suggested that type 2 diabetes also has some associations with learning disabilities. This raises the question of whether ``Is there a connection between type 2 diabetes and dyslexia?{''}. In this study, this question is elaborated by linking their developmental processes via bioinformatics analysis about these two diseases individually and collectively. Result The literature review for dyslexia and type two diabetes was completed. As the result of this literature review, the genes that are associated to type 2 diabetes and dyslexia were identified. The biological pathways of dyslexia, and dyslexia associated genes, type 2 diabetes, and type 2 diabetes associated genes were identified. The association of these genes, regarding to their association with pathways were analysed, and using STRING database the gene associations were analysed and identified. Conclusion The findings of this research included the interaction analysis via gene association, co-expression and protein-protein interaction. These findings clarified the interconnection between dyslexia and type 2 diabetes in molecular level and it will be the beginning of an answer regarding to the relationship between T2D and dyslexia. Finally, by improving the understanding this paper aims to open the way for the possible future approach to examine this hypothesis.1OCT 212
Risk Factors Associated with Dysfunction of Permanent Tunneled Cuffed Hemodialysis Catheters; Single Center Experience
ABSTRACT
Purpose: Permanent tunneled cuffed catheters are frequently preferred for hemodialysis in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF), but
the factors associated with the dysfunction of these catheters are not well known. Our goal is to investigate these risk factors.
Materials and Methods: All cases with a diagnosis of CRF and a permanent tunneled cuffed catheter inserted into the central vein
for the first time in our radiology clinic between 2014 and 2019 and who developed catheter dysfunction were included in the study.
Demographic and clinical data of the cases were obtained from file records. The relationship between the causes of catheter dysfunction
and the presence of diabetes and hypertension was investigated.
Results: Of the total 123 cases, 78 (63.4%) were male, 45 (36.6%) were female, the median age was 55 (28-78). Twenty-nine (23.6%)
of the cases had thrombosis, 72 (58.5%) had venous stenosis and 22 (17.9%) had catheter dysfunction due to fibrin sheath. Dysfunction
groups were compared with each other in terms of age, gender, duration of operation of the catheter, CRF etiology, comorbid diseases,
the vein where the catheter was placed and the use of anticoagulants. The most important cause of catheter dysfunction in the early
period was thrombosis (p = 0.003). When the causes of dysfunction were examined, the most common causes of dysfunction were
venous stenosis in patients with hypertension, thrombosis in patients with diabetes as a concomitant disease without diabetes in the
etiology of CRF, and thrombosis in patients with diabetes in CRF etiology (p <0.001). In addition, it was found that catheter dysfunction
due to thrombosis developed less in patients using anticoagulants (p <0.001). There was no statistically significant difference between
the groups in terms of other parameters (p> 0.05).
Conclusion: The use of low-dose anticoagulants plays a protective role against thrombosis. The use of low-dose anticoagulants in
patients without contraindications, especially in diabetic patients, may reduce especially early catheter dysfunction
Personalized Reference Intervals in Laboratory Medicine: A New Model Based on Within-Subject Biological Variation
BACKGROUND: The concept of personalized medicine has received widespread attention in the last decade. However, personalized medicine depends on correct diagnosis and monitoring of patients, for which personalized reference intervals for laboratory tests may be beneficial. In this study, we propose a simple model to generate personalized reference intervals based on historical, previously analyzed results, and data on analytical and within-subject biological variation. METHODS: A model using estimates of analytical and within-subject biological variation and previous test results was developed. We modeled the effect of adding an increasing number of measurement results on the estimation of the personal reference interval. We then used laboratory test results from 784 adult patients (>18 years) considered to be in a steady-state condition to calculate personalized reference intervals for 27 commonly requested clinical chemistry and hematology measurands. RESULTS: Increasing the number of measurements had little impact on the total variation around the true homeostatic set point and using >= 3 previous measurement results delivered robust personalized reference intervals. The personalized reference intervals of the study participants were different from one another and, as expected, located within the common reference interval. However, in general they made up only a small proportion of the population-based reference interval. CONCLUSIONS: Our study shows that, if using results from patients in steady state, only a few previous test results and reliable estimates of within-subject biological variation are required to calculate personalized reference intervals. This may be highly valuable for diagnosing patients as well as for follow-up and treatment.2FEB374-3846

An important source of preanalytical error in medical laboratories: centrifugation
Centrifugation separates particles within the specimen according to their shape, dimensions, and density and basically can be defined as a separation method. The centrifuge is an essential device in medical laboratories to prepare the serum, plasma, and urine samples for analysis. It is basically an electric device composed of the stationary (motor) and the motile (rotor) part. The centrifugation depends on two main variables: relative centrifugal force (RCF) and centrifugation time. The physical impact separating the specimen into its components in the centrifuge known as RCF is expressed as the multiples of gravitational acceleration (xg). RPM, defined as the number of rotations of the centrifuge perminute, shows the speed of the centrifuge. RCF value can be calculated by using RPM, and the centrifuge radius. Because models and sizes of centrifuges vary considerably, the use of gravity (g) forces instead of RPM is suggested. The centrifuges can be classified according to their usage, speed, technical specifications, and rotor type. An accurate and precise centrifugation process is essential to prevent errors in the preanalytical phase. The purpose of this document is to ensure the standardization of a good, precise protocol for the centrifugation process among the medical laboratories.4AUG399-4054
