Subacute Thyroiditis and Graves' Disease Possibly Associated with Sars-CoV-2 Infection: Presentation of Two Cases and Review of the Current Data
The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 has been identified as the cause of a pandemic of respiratory illness in Wuhan, China. Coronavirus disease 2019 may cause mild disease with nonspecific signs and symptoms such as fever, cough, myalgia, and fatigue or severe pneumonia with respiratory failure and sepsis. It is not clear whether coronavirus disease 2019 has an effect on the thyroid gland. Evidence support that patients with coronavirus disease 2019 who are followed up in the intensive care unit may develop temporary thyroid dysfunction as non-thyroidal illness syndrome. Until now, 22 cases of subacute thyroiditis and 5 Graves' diseases potentially related to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection have been presented in the literature. Herein, we present 2 cases with subacute thyroiditis and Graves'diseases potentially related to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection in the context of the review of the literature. Physicians should be aware of the possible relationship between thyroid dysfunction and coronavirus disease 2019.2JUN158-1622
Effects of peroxisome proliferator activated receptor gamma (PPAR gamma) agonist on fasting model applied neuron cultures
Objectives: Peroxisome proliferator activated receptor gamma (PPAR gamma) agonists used for the treatment of Diabetes Mellitus (DM), has important roles on the regulation of metabolism including ketogenesis in fasting and low glucose states. Recently PPAR gamma was proven to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects on neuronal cells. Methods: In the present study, effects of pioglitazone (PPAR gamma agonist) on cell survival, energy metabolism and mitochondrial functions were investigated in glucose deprived fasting model applied SH-SY5Y (ATCC/CRL 2266) cell lines. Before and after pioglitazone treatmentenergy metabolites (glucose, lactate, ketone (beta OHB), lactate dehydrogenase activity), mitochondrial citrate synthase activity and cell viability were investigated. Results and Conclusions: PPAR gamma agonist addition to glucose deprived, ketone added neurons provided positive improvements in energy metabolites (p<0.01), mitochondrial functions (p<0.001) and survival rates (p<0.01). Changes in mitochondrial citrate synthase activity, lactate and LDH levels of neuronal cells treated with PPAR gamma agonist have not been previously shown. Our results suggest, pioglitazone as an effective alternative for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases especially with the presence of ketone bodies. By clarifying the mechanisms of PPAR gamma agonists, a great contribution will be made to the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.1MAR 841-484
Comparison of effects of energy based devices on quality of life after sutureless thyroidectomy
Objective: In current literature, no studies evaluated effect of energy-based vessel-sealing-devices on quality of life after sutureless total thyroidectomies. This study aimed to identify any potential differences between two energy-based vessel-sealing-devices (Harmonic Focus, Ligasure LF1212) in patients with benign thyroid disorders who underwent sutureless total thyroidectomy. Materials and methods: Differences in quality of life of patients were evaluated using data obtained by Thy-PRO-39-Tr questionnaire prior to and four-week after surgery. Total and domain-based alterations in quality of life were compared between groups according to energy-based vessel-sealing-devices type (Group L, Group H). Additionally, data including demographics, height, weight, body mass index, neck circumference, sternomental distance were collected. Results: Of 1032 patients, 200 were eligible for study, at the end 193 were analysed. There were no differences between groups in terms of age, sex, body mass index, tobacco use. Analysis did not reveal any differences in overall quality of life between groups (P = .42). However, in ``eye symptoms{''} (P < .001) and ``cognitive functions{''} (P = .002) domains, Harmonic provided statistically improved quality of life. Effect on cognitive function was greater in patients of advanced age. Conclusions: Especially in elderly patients with worsening eye conditions and cognitive functions, use of Harmonic may enhance patients' outcome by increasing quality of life in addition to optimizing surgical outcome when compared to Ligasure.2JAN 1410
Evaluation of Amine Functionalized Thermal Power Plant Solid Waste for Industrial Wastewater Remediation
Micro/nanoparticles generated after the combustion of coal/lignite in the thermal power plants were modified with amino groups of (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES). These silane-based functional particles were applied in textile dye (xylenol orange, XO and methyl orange, MO) removal process to deal with an industrial wastewater problem. The maximum adsorption efficiencies of APTES coated micro/nanoparticles for MO and XO dye molecules were calculated to be around 98\% and 75\%, respectively. The adsorption behavior of the LCFA against dyes is also assessed by investigating the effect of adsorbent dosage, contact time, pH, and temperature. The optimum dye removal was observed at a pH of 4.0, and the equilibrium was achieved within 5 min. The maximum uptake capacities of LCFA-APTES for MO and XO dye molecules were calculated to be around 17.91 and 14.72 mg g(-1), respectively. This value is approximately 3 - 5 times higher than the similar adsorbent in the literature. The uptake mechanism of MO and XO dyes onto LCFA-APTES is governed by electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding between dye molecules and APTES. The surface chemical modifications and the nature of functional groups were ascertained by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The application of recovered micro/nanoparticles from solid wastes and their utilization for wastewater treatment is important not only for economy of developing countries but also for protecting the environment.JAN 17202

Percutaneous cannulation for cardiopulmonary bypass in robotic mitral valve surgery with zero groin complications
Introduction Robotic valve surgery utilizes the femoral vessels to set up cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) which translates to groin wound and lower extremity vascular complications. A less invasive technique is a totally percutaneous bypass using vascular closure devices (VCDs) with concerns for lower limb ischemia and arterial stenosis. Since April 2018, we have adopted the standard use of total percutaneous CPB in our robotic mitral cases. We report our institutional results with this technique. Methods All consecutive patients who underwent robotic mitral valve surgery between April 2018 and December 2020 in our institution were included in our study. Hospital database data on demographics, operative variables, and surgical outcomes were recorded and analyzed. Results Robotic mitral valve surgeries were performed on 32 consecutive patients (mean age 57.2 +/- 14.8) between April 2018 and December 2020. None of our patients developed an infection at any site. Seroma, hematoma, or pseudoaneurysm were not observed at puncture sites. Surgical repair of the femoral vessels or an additional VCD was not necessary for any of our patients. Patients were followed up for a mean duration of 23.5 months. Our patients did not present with a late wound infection, a seroma, or a pseudoaneurysm, nor had complaints of limb ischemia or claudication. Conclusion Total percutaneous bypass is the least invasive method of establishing extracorporeal circulation for cardiac surgery and can be performed with excellent results. The benefits of robotic surgery can be expanded with better results in groin cannulation by the adoption of total percutaneous CPB.2FEB280-2843
Injury to the Posterior Horn of the Lateral Meniscus from a Misplaced Tibial Tunnel for Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: A Case Report
Specialty: Orthopedics Traumatology Objective: Rare disease Background: Posterior meniscal root avulsions can cause meniscal extrusion, joint space narrowing, and progressive knee arthritis. Iatrogenic posterior meniscal root avulsions after malpositioning of the transtibial tunnels during an-terior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction can account for poor long-term outcomes seen in some patients following ACL reconstruction. Therefore, correct transtibial tunnel placement during ACL reconstruction is es-sential to avoid iatrogenic meniscal damage. Case Report: A 32-year-old man presented with 1 year of right knee pain and instability following a non-contact twisting injury sustained while playing soccer. An ACL tear with no meniscal involvement was diagnosed at an outside institution. A double-bundle reconstruction was performed at that time. Three months after surgery, a medial partial meniscectomy was performed after a medial meniscal tear and failure to reduce initial symptoms dur-ing the index procedure. Advanced imaging at our institution 6 months later demonstrated an iatrogenic later-al posterior meniscal root avulsions after malpositioning of the transtibial tunnels. Given the ACL graft integ-rity upon arthroscopic evaluation, the root tear was repaired using a 2-tunnel transtibial pull-out technique. Advanced imaging 1 year after surgery showed a well-maintained meniscal repair with no extrusion. Conclusions: Accurate transtibial tunnel placement during ACL reconstructive surgery is vital to avoid meniscal root detach-ment and the associated complications resulting in poor patient outcomes from this iatrogenic injury. Clinicians treating patients with a history of cruciate ligament reconstruction presenting with postoperative pain and in-stability should consider this pathology in their differential diagnosis.NOV 32
Regulatory T Cells in Pancreatic Cancer: Of Mice and Men
Simple Summary Regulatory T cells (Treg) are a major immunosuppressive cell subset in the pancreatic tumor microenvironment. Tregs influence tumor growth by acting either directly on cancer cells or via the inhibition of effector immune cells. Treg cells form a partially redundant network with other immunosuppressive cells such as myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) that confer robustness to tumor immunosuppression and resistance to immunotherapy. The results obtained in preclinical studies, whereupon Treg depletion, MDSCs concomitantly decreased in early tumors whereas an inverse association was seen in advanced PCa, urge a comprehensive analysis of the immunosuppressive profile of PCa throughout tumorigenesis. One relevant context to analyse these compensatory mechanisms may be patients with locally advanced PCa undergoing neoadjuvant therapy (neoTx). In order to understand these dynamics and to uncover stage-specific actional strategies involving Tregs, pre-clinical models that allow the administration of neoTx to different stages of PCa may be a very useful platform. Predicting metabolic syndrome by visceral adiposity index, body roundness index, dysfunctional adiposity index, lipid accumulation product index, and body shape index in adults
Introduction: the increasing prevalence of metabolic syndrome draws attention to the importance of detecting metabolic syndrome with practical methods in the early period. Objectives: to compare anthropometric measurements and indexes for prediction of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in adults. Methods: the study was conducted with adults classified as MetS (n = 92) and a control group (n = 137) according to the International Diabetes Federation. Anthropometric measurements, visceral adiposity index (VAI), dysfunctional adiposity index (DAI), A body shape index (ABSI), lipid accumulation product (LAP), body roundness index (BRI), glucose, lipid biomarkers, and blood pressure (BP) levels were compared. A ROC analysis was performed. Results: MetS frequency was determined to be 40.2 \% (n = 92). All biochemical parameters except high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol and BP levels, all anthropometric measurements, and all index values except ABSI of the MetS group were higher than in the control group (p < 0.001). DAI had the highest discriminatory ability for MetS (AUC = 0.921). While the discriminatory ability of LAP was slightly lower (AUC = 0.915), ABSI had the lowest ability for MetS (AUC = 0.606). Conclusion: according to the study findings, MetS was found in almost half of individuals, and the LAP index and DAI can be used as predictive tools for early detection of MetS.4JUL-AUG794-8023
