Assessment of the Relationship between University Students’ Food Consumption and Anthropometric Measurements and Phase Angle
ABSTRACT
Purpose: This study was carried out to assess the relationship between university students’ food consumption and
anthropometric measurements, and phase angle (PA).
Methods: The study was conducted with a total of 240 students between the ages of 18-25 studying at the Department
of Nutrition and Dietetics at Agri Ibrahim Cecen University Health School. Research data were collected using a
questionnaire that included about demographic information and questions about physical activity levels and three day food consumption record was taken. Lastly, anthropometric measurements of the students were performed by the
researcher in person.
Results: The study’s findings revealed that the students’ energy intake was lower than their energy expenditures. The
body mass indexes (BMI), and waist circumferences of female and male students were calculated as 21.8 ± 3.2 kg/m2 and
23 ± 3.4 kg/m2
, and 75.2 ± 8.1 cm and 85 ± 10 cm, respectively. The PA was 5.7 ± 0.5º in female students and 6.7 ± 0.5º
in male students (p<0.05).
Conclusion: The study’s findings revealed that male students had significantly higher PA values. The PA values of female
students were found to have increased with BMI, waist circumference, and body muscle mass values. There was also no
significant relationship between students’ PA values and and food consumption levels regardless of gender
Is it Really Necessary to Perform Colposcopy in Patients with Ascus and HR HPV Positivity?
ABSTRACT
Introduction: Papanicolaou (Pap) smear is a very important screening method for detection of cervİcal cancer or
cell changes that can lead to it. Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS) is the most common
abnormality seen among all cervical cytologies with the percentage of 4-5% . Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is
regarded as a major cause of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and cervical cancer. Colposcopy is recommended for all
women with high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) and atypical squamous cells-cannot exclude high-grade
squamous intraepithelial lesion (ASC-H) for cervical cancer screening . It is also recommended for high-risk HPV (HR HPV)
positive women with ASCUS. The aim of this study is to evaluate the importance of colposcopy in patients with ASCUS and
HR HPV positivity.
Materials and Methods: We performed a retrospective study approved by the ethics committee of Acıbadem University.
Women with diagnosis of ASCUS and HR HPV positivity who underwent colposcopic evaluation at 2 different gynecologic
oncology clinics of our university from January 2011 to January 2019 were included in our study. The age range was from
21 to 48 and the mean age of patients’ was 29. Subjects who were pregnant, hysterectomized or had previous cytological
abnormalities were excluded.
Conclusion: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the significance of colposcopy in patients with ASCUS and high-risk
HPV positivity, especially strains 16 and 18. As mentioned in some other studies, immediate colposcopy is an expensive
screening procedure for further evaluation of ASCUS
Alterations of Neuroretinal and Corneal Thickness in Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis
ABSTRACT
Purpose:To compare changes in macula, retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and central corneal thickness (CCT) in patients
with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT) with age-matched healthy control group.
Materials and Methods: This study was conducted with a prospective, observational, cross-sectional design. The
individuals participating in the study were divided into 2 groups: patients with a diagnosis of HT (group 1, n:54 eyes)
and age-matched healthy participants (group 2, n:70 eyes). Corneal, retinal and macular thickness measured by optical
coherence tomography. Mean outcome measurements were CCT, intra-ocular pressure (IOP), central 1 mm foveal
thickness (CFT), subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT), total macular volume (TMV), central 1 mm foveal volume (CFV), and
RNFL thickness in superior, nasal, inferior and temporal quadrants.
Results:The mean IOP was 17.07±2.34μm in group 1 and 14.20±2.76μm in group 2, respectively (p<0.001). Mean CCTs
were 539.44±35.27μm and 555.06±40.53μm (p=0.001), CFTs were 227.35±17.52µm and 230.38±23.52µm (p=0.57),
SFCT were 210,79±20,13µm and 268,47±24,56µm (p<0.001), TMVs were 7.16±0.35mm3 and 7.02±0.26mm3(p=0.07),
CFVs were 0.17±0.01mm3 and 0.19±0.07mm3 (p=0.16) in group 1and group 2, respectively. RNFL thickness values were
significantly thinner in the group 1(p<0.05) in all quadrants except for the nasal quadrant (p=0.086).
Conclusion:Hypothyroidism secondary to HT may be a determining factor affecting the development of the cornea and
retina. Elevated IOP and decrement of RNFL thickness in children with HT increased the risk of developing glaucoma, as
well as decreased SFCT may predispose to the development of chorioretinal disorders in the futur
Relationship of Self-Compassion with Anxiety and Depressive Symptoms in Infertile Women
ABSTRACT
Purpose: Infertile women have a higher rate of psychiatric symptoms compared to fertile women while depression
and anxiety are among the most common psychiatric disorders in this group. Self-compassion might be a variable in
predicting depression, anxiety and stress. The study aimed to evaluate self-compassion in infertile women and to examine
its relationship with depression and anxiety levels.
Methods: This cross-sectional study included a total number of 122 participants. The study group (n=50) consisted of
women who applied to the gynaecology and obstetrics clinic for infertility treatment and were recruited consecutively.
The control group (n=72) was recruited from hospital staff and their relatives, of the similar age and gender as the study
group. The participants filled Self-Compassion Scale (SCS) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) in addition
to sociodemographic data form.
Results: SCS scores were significantly lower, and HADS scores (both depression and anxiety) were significantly higher
in the study group, compared to the control group. There was a negative correlation between SCS and HADS scores (p <
0.001), indicating that lower self-compassion levels are associated with increased depression and anxiety. Duration of
infertility treatment was not correlated with SCS and HADS scores (p > 0.05).
Conclusion: Infertile women have higher levels of depression and anxiety while self-compassion is an influential factor
in maintaining psychological well-being and preventing anxiety and depressive symptoms in this group. Self-compassion
based or other interventions targeting psychological well-being of infertile women would be beneficial
Has the COVID-19 Pandemic Affected Breast Cancer Stage and Surgical Volume?
BackgroundThis study investigates the effects of COVID-19 on the breast cancer stage and the volume of breast cancer surgery in a specialized breast institute. MethodsData of 332 patients who were diagnosed and treated for breast cancer between December 2019 and November 2020 were evaluated retrospectively according to periods of pandemic. ResultsA significant decrease in the number of operations, especially upfront surgeries rather than surgeries after neoadjuvant chemotherapy, was detected in the early period of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was found that patients with complaints were mostly admitted during this period (p = 0.024). No statistical significance was found for age, sex, side of the tumor, type of tumor, surgery to breast, and axilla. Following the early period of the pandemic, it was observed that patients with mostly luminal, early-stage, and less axillary nodal involvement (p < 0.05) were admitted, and as a result, it was founded that upfront surgeries increased, although no change in TNM staging was observed. However, it did affect the decision of initial treatment. Thus, the number of upfront surgeries was significantly higher than the NCT group (p = 0.027) following the early period. ConclusionSurgical volume is significantly affected in the early period of the COVID-19 pandemic. To overcome overload due to delayed surgeries related to pandemics, some hospitals should be spared for oncological treatments. Following the early period, mostly luminal type, early-stage patients were admitted, probably because of increased self-awareness and short wave duration, but the breast cancer stage was not affected.FEB 7
Acute Effects of Video Game-based Exercises in Patients Receiving Chemotherapy After Breast Cancer Surgery - A Pilot Study
OBJECTIVE Virtual reality programs, which have developed rapidly with the advancement of technology, have led to the development of alternative treatment methods preferred in rehabilitation. This study aimed to investigate the acute effects of a video game-based exercise program applied after breast cancer surgery on the upper extremity functionality, pain severity, and the level of fatigue. METHODS Fifteen female patients aged between 30 and 60 years (50.13 +/- 8.79) who completed their 12th week after breast cancer surgery and were received adjuvant chemotherapy treatment were randomly included in this pre-test and post-test study. The patients were performed a 30-min video game-based exercise program. The muscle strength, range of motion (ROM), pain and fatigue level assessments were performed before and after the video game-based exercises. The level of exercise pleasure was determined with the modified visual analog scale. RESULTS Shoulder flexion, abduction, and external rotation ROM significantly increased after video game-based exercise program. No difference was detected for shoulder abduction muscle strength (p>0.05) and pain level significantly increased (p<0.05). The average exercise pleasure level is 4.5/5 and the average fatigue level was 11.13/20. CONCLUSION Video game-based exercises provided improvement in ROM of the shoulder joint without causing fatigue. Studies with different treatment durations are needed to minimize the increase in pain level.116-223
Trans-Arterial Chemoembolization with 50 mu m Degradable Starch Microspheres Versus 300-500 mu m Drug Eluting Beads in Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Comparative Analysis of Initial Treatment Outcomes
Background and Aims: Trans-arterial chemoembolization (TACE) has become a widely accepted treatment in unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We aimed at comparing the efficacy of Degradable Starch Microspheres (DSMs)-TACE with 50 +/- 7 mu m versus 300-500 mu m Drug Eluting Beads (DEB)-TACE in terms of initial clinical and radiological treatment response parameters. Material and Methods: A total of 54 patients with unresectable HCC who underwent DEB-TACE (n = 25) or DSMs-TACE (n = 29) were included in this retrospective study. Baseline demographic and clinical characteristics, duration of follow-up, local recurrence and survival status, as well as treatment outcome including treatment response via modified Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (mRECIST) criteria, viable and total tumor diameter and serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) levels were analyzed in both study groups. Results: No significant difference was noted between the two groups in terms of local recurrence (31.6 vs. 16.7\%) or mortality (73.9 vs. 85.7\%) rates after 36-month and 12-month follow-up, respectively. DSMs-TACE vs. DEB-TACE was associated with significantly higher complete response rate (27.6 vs. 0.0\%, p = 0.011) and significant decrease in serum AFP levels (p = 0.013). Conclusion: Both DSMs-TACE with 50 +/- 7 mu m microspheres and 300-500 mu m DEB-TACE are effective for local control of unresectable HCC. Our findings revealed superiority of DSMs-TACE over DEB-TACEnin terms of initial clinical and radiological tumor responsethough no significant difference was noted between the two patient groups in terms of local recurrence or mortality during follow up.110
INCREASED MATERNAL LEPTIN LEVELS MAY BE AN INDICATOR OF SUBCLINICAL HYPOTHYROIDISM IN A NEWBORN
Background: Several factors may influence newborn thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) concentrations and cause subclinical hypothyroidism in a newborn. A sufficient level of leptin signalling is needed for the normal production of TSH and thyroid hormones by the thyroid gland. Our study aimed to investigate the correlation between maternal serum leptin concentration during the third trimester of pregnancy and newborn screening-TSH levels. Methods: This prospective cross-sectional study was conducted in obstetrics and gynaecology clinics of a state hospital between June and August 2013. Maternal venous blood samples were collected from 270 healthy pregnant women in the third trimester just before delivery. Measurements of maternal fT3, fT4, TSH, anti-thyroid peroxidase (TPO), and anti-thyroglobulin (anti-Tg) antibodies from serum samples were performed by chemiluminescence immunoassay. Maternal serum leptin levels were determined by ELISA. Dried capillary blood spots were used to measure newborn TSH levels. Results: Subjects were divided into two groups according to the neonatal TSH levels using a cut-point of 5.5 mIU/L. Median maternal serum leptin levels were significantly higher in newborns whose TSH levels were higher than >5.5 mIU/L {[}13.2 mg/L (1.3-46.5) vs 19.7 mg/L (2.4-48.5), p<0.05]. Serum leptin levels showed a negative correlation with maternal fT4 (r=0.32, p<0.05), fT3 (r=0.23, p<0.05), and a positive correlation with BMI (r=0.30, p<0.05). Conclusions: Our results suggest that high leptin levels in the third trimester of pregnancy influence maternal thyroid functions and might cause an increase in newborn TSH levels. Detection of high maternal serum leptin levels may be a reason for subclinical hypothyroidism.2156-1614
Gaiectin-3 as a Potential Prognostic Biomarker for COVID-19 Disease: A Case-Control Study
Background Recent studies have investigated the importance of Galetin-3 in inflammation, fibrosis, cell proliferation, cardiac disease, diabetes, and tumor formation. Aims This study aims to investigate the role of the Galectin-3 level in the diagnosis of COVID-19 pneumonia and the value of the Galectin-3 level in predicting the clinical course of the patient. Methods This study employed a prospective, case-control study design and was conducted at Bakircay University Cigli Training and Research Hospital. A total of 100 patients (40 had moderate and 60 had severe/critical COVID-19 disease according to World Health Organisation guidelines) and 50 non-symptomatic healthy volunteers participated in the study. Blood samples were taken from patients at the time of hospital admission, after which serum was isolated. Following the isolation of serum, Galectin-3 levels were evaluated using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. Results The serum Galectin-3 level was measured as 13.57 (10.9-16.4) ng/mL in the control group, 13.52 (10.69-16.6) ng/mL in the moderate disease group, and 11.65 (6.09-14.33) ng/mL in the severe/critical disease group. Serum Galectin-3 levels were significantly lower in the severe/critical disease group compared to the control and moderate disease groups (p=0.001 and p=0.019, respectively). Using ROC analysis, a larger area under the curve (AUC) for the serum Galectin-3 levels of the control group (AUC-0.622, 95\% CI =0.529-0.714p=0.015) was calculated compared to the COVID-19 patient group for the diagnosis of COVID-19 disease. The Galectin-3 level was found to be 75\% sensitive and 50\% specific at a cut-off level of 11.3 ng/mL in predicting the need for ICU treatment. Conclusion Galectin-3 levels may be a beneficial biomarker in predicting the clinical severity of COVID-19 disease when used in conjunction with other known biomarkers, at the time of admission to the emergency department (ED).9SEP 51
Beneficial Effects of Limosilactobacillus fermentum CECT 5716 Administration to Infants Delivered by Cesarean Section
Cesarean section (CS) disrupts the natural microbiota colonization process in infants, which might compromise immune system maturation, leading to a higher risk of infections. We evaluated the effect of the probiotic Limosilactobacillus (L.) fermentum CECT 5716 on the incidence of gastrointestinal and respiratory infections in the CS infant subgroups (n = 173) of three randomized clinical trials in which this probiotic strain was demonstrated to be safe and effective for preventing infections. Therefore, the data for the CS infants were extracted to obtain the incidence rate ratio (IRR) and 95\% CI for gastrointestinal and respiratory infections for each study and were then combined to obtain a pooled IRR and 95\% CI using the generic inverse variance method. There was a significant reduction of 73\% in the incidence of gastrointestinal infections in CS infants receiving L. fermentum CECT 5716 compared with those receiving the control formula {[}n = 173, IRR: 0.27 (0.13, 0.53), p = 0.0002]. Regarding respiratory infections, although pooled results showed a reduction of 14\% in the probiotic group, the difference was not statistically significant {[}n = 173, IRR (95\% CI): 0.86 (0.67, 1.11), p = 0.25]. In conclusion, the administration of L. fermentum CECT 5716 to CS-born infants protects them from gastrointestinal infections by reducing the risk by up to 73\% in this population.JUL 71
