Learning Through Play at School: Ukraine, 2019-2024 (Ukrainian version)

The Learning Through Play at School Research Study Ukraine was a four-year longitudinal intervention study funded by the LEGO Foundation and implemented by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) and the Ukrainian Educational Research Association (UERA). The study was implemented between 2019 and 2024, during COVID-19 and the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russian armed forces. Despite, at times, insurmountable challenges, the professional learning intervention was successful in supporting most teachers to progress from a surface level understanding of learning through play to a deep level. In addition, almost all children’s literacy and social-emotional skills grew significantly from start to end of the study, and intervention school children’s skills grew more than control schools. This study generated a new way of understanding how teachers develop learning through play practice and understanding at school, which could be applied in Ukraine and other contexts, for reflection and evaluation

Education Out Loud case study: School for Life

Children living in remote rural parts of Ghana experience inequality in basic education, in terms of both access and outcomes. This issue is particularly acute in the north of the country and for girls. For example, 30 percent of children in the north have no school nearby and 20 percent will never enroll. Furthermore, transparency and accountability within Ghana’s education system is weak. Generally, information is not disseminated in a way that is accessible to most citizens (for example it is not produced in a local language), which means they are denied the opportunity to understand and engage with the education system and, in turn, hold officials to account. It is within this context that School for Life, and the associated CLEAR project operate. School for Life was founded in 1995 and is a lead civil society organisation (CSOs) in Ghana. It was founded due to the serious educational performance challenges faced in deprived parts of northern Ghana, particularly in terms of the high number of out-of-school children. This case study is part of a larger body of work funded by the Global Partnership for Education’s (GPE) Education Out Loud (EOL) programme. It explores the advocacy and policy influencing (API) activities of School for Life, an organisation receiving funding from EOL, and the process, results and impact of action research project they conducted in partnership with MDF/ Australian Council for Education Research (ACER), an EOL ‘Global Learning Partner’ (GLP)

This video transcript is from a Grade 2 Language and Communication (literacy) lesson in Port Vila, Vanuatu. In this lesson, the teacher works with the students to construct a narrative from a series of pictures from a story. The teacher uses French as the primary language of instruction, and Bislama at times. The video is part of a training package developed by the Australian Council of Educational Research to enable those observing early primary classes to make consistent and reliable observations. It is based on a purpose-built classroom observation tool developed to collect data on changes to teaching practice and a training program for local researchers. This is the second of 2 videos in the training package

    CIS Pedagogy Project Report

    No full text
The Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) was contracted by the Council of International Schools (CIS) to undertake research investigating how their schools make decisions on pedagogical approaches and to develop a toolkit (published as the ‘Pedagogy Playbook’) to support schools in making those decisions. The project started in May 2022 with initial research conducted by the Klingenstein Center, Columbia University and completed in August 2024 by ACER. In this study, leaders, teachers, parents and students from more than 140 CIS member schools reflected on what matters when it comes to teaching and learning. They shared their priorities and decisionmaking processes as well as the values and priorities that underpin and drive the decisions they make day-to-day. Nine priorities emerged: academic outcomes; accountability, evaluation & accreditation; curriculum & learning programmes; developing global citizens; learning resources; partnerships with parents; research-informed innovation; student needs & voices; and teacher knowledge. skills & engagement. Their insights informed the development of Pedagogy Playbook, designed for learning leaders who are ready to recommit to their priorities for learning in their schools through action planning for the future. This digital toolkit is available to guide pedagogical choices and decision-making in international schools and includes an accompanying professional learning package to support its use

    No full text
This case study is Phase 2 of a sequential mixed-methods analysis undertaken by the Global Tracer Facility (GTF) into the longterm impact of the Australia Awards Women Leading and Influencing (WLI) enrichment program on developmental leadership in the Pacific. It builds upon findings from a social network analysis (SNA) conducted in Phase 1, which examined connections between WLI alumni from Cohorts 1–3 (2017 to 2019) of the WLI Leadership and Mentoring Program. For Phase 2 of this research approach, the GTF worked closely with locally based researchers in Papua New Guinea (PNG) and Fiji to conduct in-depth interviews of five nominated key network members identified in Phase 1 to capture rich contextual insights into women’s leadership in PNG and Fiji
