Learning progressions as models and tools for supporting classroom assessment

    Get PDF
Like all models, learning progressions (LPs) provide simplified representations of complex phenomena. One key simplification is the characterisation of student thinking in terms of levels. This characterisation is both essential for large-scale applications, such as informing standards, but potentially problematic for smaller-scale applications. In this paper, I describe a program of research designed to explore the smaller-scale use of LPs as supports for teacher classroom assessment practices in light of this simplification. Based on this research, I conclude that LP levels may serve as a generative heuristic, particularly when teachers are engaged with evidence of the limitations of LP levels and supported to use LPs in ways that do not rely on their levels

More than 900 students aged 13 and above were surveyed about ‘the prevalence of peer-on-peer sexual harassment and sexual violence, including online, in their lives and the lives of their peers’ as part of a rapid review in the UK. This rapid evaluation of core Life Education programs conducted by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) in June 2021 is an independent investigation that demonstrates the evidence base underpinning Life Education programs in primary schools Australia-wide. It presents a national snapshot by drawing upon existing Life Education-specific evaluation data, existing ACER student wellbeing data, and accepted best practice in the field of student health and wellbeing education. The project addressed the key evaluation questions: How are core Life Education programs underpinned by evidence-based best practice, and how are core Life Education programs impacting primary-aged student wellbeing outcomes that align to the health and physical education Australian and State Curriculums

Assessment of Oral Language and Early Literacy in Early Childhood Education and Care: Literature Review

    Get PDF
This literature review is one of a series of reviews to support Victorian early childhood professionals to assess children\u27s learning and development in relation to the five Learning and Development Outcomes in the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework (VEYLDF). This review focuses on the Outcome: Children are effective communicators, and specifically on children as effective oral communicators. Focusing on the development of oral language and early literacy in the early years, this literature review sets out to provide a resource that will equip early childhood professionals with the knowledge to identify and assess children\u27s progress in oral language and early literacy development. Section 1 defines oral language and early literacy, and describes the key components of the Outcome: Children are effective communicators that relate to oral communication. This review defines the types of oral language practices as functional, conversational and narrative, and proposes a model that reminds early childhood professionals that each type of oral communication has both expressive and receptive modes. The second part of this model emphasises the importance of oral language in providing a strong foundation for literacy, including the development of reading and writing. Section 2 explains the principles for assessing children as effective oral communicators, and Section 3 identifies a range of tools available to support early childhood professionals in their assessment of children’s oral language and early literacy. A matrix shows how the tools selected for this literature review address each of the oral communication strands of vocabulary, language structures, language pragmatics and comprehension. Section 4 describes ten assessment tools in more detail
