Experimental investigation of influence parameters on cartridge fired pin resistance
Cartridge fired pins, also known as powder actuated fasteners, have a wide application in different construction industry fields, mostly for joints of cold-formed structural elements and profiled steel sheeting, or for installation of shear connectors in composite steel-concrete structures. Installation of cartridge fired pins is mostly governed by high energy introduction from installation device and mechanical fastener to the steel base material, without initial predrilling of holes. Therefore, large plastic deformations of base material are developed through installation procedure, together with various anchorage mechanisms between fastener and base material. This paper presents experimental investigation of most important influence parameters on behaviour and resistance of cartridge fired pins, such as adjusted installation power level on installation device and steel base material strength. Experimental investigation involved X-ENP-21 HVB cartridge fired pins through double-sided shear tests, tension tests with fasteners installed over X-HVB shear connector with two different steel grades (S275 and S355) and two installation power levels (2 and 3.5), and tension tests with fasteners installed over two thicknesses of pro-filed steel sheeting (0.8 mm and 1.0 mm). Cartridge fired pin resistances together with corresponding failure mechanisms were experimentally quantified and presented in this paper
Early Highway Construction Cost Estimation: Selection of Key Cost Drivers
Cost estimates in the early stages of project development are essential for making the right deci-sions, but they are a huge challenge and risk for owners and potential contractors due to limited information about the characteristics of the future highway project. While previous studies were mainly focused on achieving the highest possible estimation accuracy, this paper aims to propose cost estimation models that can provide satisfactory accuracy with the least possible effort, and to compare the perspectives of owners and contractors, as the key stakeholders on projects. To de-termine cost drivers (CDs) which have a high influence on highway construction costs and re-quire low effort for their establishment, a questionnaire survey was conducted. Based on the key stakeholders’ perceptions and collected data set, cost estimation models were developed using multiple regression analysis, artificial neural networks, and XGBoost. The results show that rea-sonable cost estimation accuracy can be achieved with a relatively low effort for 3 CDs for the owners' perspective and 5 CDs for the contractors' perspective. Additional inclusion of input CDs in models does not necessarily imply an increase in accuracy. Also, the questionnaire results show that owners are more concerned about environmental issues, while contractors are more con-cerned about the possible changes in resource prices (especially after recent high increases caused by COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war). These findings can help owners and potential con-tractors in intelligent decision-making in the early stages of future highway construction projects
Application of Fuzzy AHP Method for Selection of Equipment for Concrete Works
During the realization of a construction project, in addition to the laborious work, it is necessary to engage appropriate construction equipment. Hiring appropriate equipment is a complex and risky operation due to the existence of a number of factors that influence the right choice. These factors imply: economical aspects, operating requirements, reliability of equipment, service support, use in future projects, etc. Therefore, the problem of choosing construction equipment for the realization of a construction project should be seen as a problem of multicriteria optimization. Since the values of factors influencing the correct choice of mechanization cannot be precisely determined, it is necessary to consider these factors as fuzzy numbers. In this paper, the application of the fuzzy AHP method with triangular fuzzy numbers for the selection of mechanization for performing concrete works is proposed. When ranking alternatives, the following quantitative and qualitative criteria were taken into account: total cost, duration of the project, availability of mechanization, environmental impact, ownership of mechanization, and conditions of maintenance of mechanization. The paper presents a case study of the selection of the best group of equipment for performing concrete works
A glimpse into the euPOLIS multi-dimensional Indicator System for Site Screening & NBS Assessment
Evaluating the impact of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) via appropriate indicators and metrics has
attracted, in the past few years, significant interest. In response to this, the European Commission has
recently published a handbook that aims to serve as a guide towards the evaluation of NBS impacts (EC,
2021) based on current available knowledge and state-of-art technologies and practices. The evaluation
process, which involves the development and estimation of pertinent metrics, is crucial across the different
NBS implementation stages, i.e., from the selection and design of effective NBS interventions to the NBS
efficiency evaluation and potential improvement of the deployed systems. Within this context and as part
of the work that was carried out for the euPOLIS project, an integrated indicator-based methodological
framework is proposed herein for assessing the multi-dimensional aspects and impacts associated with
the implementation of NBS in urban environments. The proposed framework employs different types of
indicators with distinct functions and purposes and aims at providing structured guidance to practitioners
and urban planners throughout all the different NBS analysis, deployment, and evaluation stages
Sustainability assessment of recycled aggregate concrete structures: A critical view on the current state-of-knowledge and practice
The environmental impacts of activities such as raw material extraction, construction
of infrastructure, and demolition, place construction as one of the
sectors that exert the highest pressures on the environment, society, and economy.
Some of the major environmental impacts for which the construction
industry is responsible are mineral resource depletion, greenhouse gas emissions,
and waste generation. Among the different strategies that exist to
decrease such impacts, recycling demolition waste into recycled concrete
aggregates has been considered a promising alternative. As such, at present,
the literature dealing with the impact assessment of recycled aggregate concrete
structures is very extensive. Therefore, the objective of this article is to
present a critical view of the state-of-the-art in terms of sustainability assessment
of recycled aggregate concrete structures, taking a holistic perspective by
considering environmental, social, and economic impacts
