    The receptor for advanced glycation end product (RAGE) pathway in COVID-19

    Introduction: Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) with lung involvement frequently causes morbidity and mortality. Advanced age appears to be the most important risk factor. The receptor for advanced glycation end-product (RAGE) pathway is considered to play important roles in the physiological aging and pathogenesis of lung diseases. This study aimed to investigate the possible relationship between COVID-19 and RAGE pathway. Materials and methods: This study included 23 asymptomatic patients and 35 patients with lung involvement who were diagnosed with COVID-19 as well as 22 healthy volunteers. Lung involvement was determined using computed tomography. Serum soluble-RAGE (sRAGE) levels were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: The sRAGE levels were significantly higher in the asymptomatic group than in the control group. Age, fibrinogen, C-reactive protein, and ferritin levels were higher and the sRAGE level was lower in the patients with lung involvement than in the asymptomatic patients. Conclusions: In this study, patients with high sRAGE levels were younger and had asymptomatic COVID-19. Patients with low sRAGE levels were elderly patients with lung involvement, which indicates that the RAGE pathway plays an important role in the aggravation of COVID-19. © 2021 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.The authors thank Enago (www.enago.com) for English language review

    THE EFFECT OF SIMULATION PRACTICES ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF NURSING STUDENTS' EMERGENCY CASE MANAGEMENT SKILLS

    Aim: The objective of the study was to examine the effectiveness of simulation practices in improving the emergency case management skills of nursing students. Method: The study was designed as quasi-experimental research and carried out with nursing students (n=42) in three phases. In the first phase, theoretical training on emergency situations was delivered. The students were involved in the emergency case scenarios interacting with high-fidelity simulators and standardized patients, and their performances were recorded in the second phase. In the third phase, debriefing sessions were conducted. Pre- and post-tests and written feedback forms were used to gather the data. Results: The levels of knowledge (mean score of pre-test: 2.83; post-test: 5.95) were statistically significant (p<0.05). A positive change was revealed in the levels of self-confidence among the students after the training program. Conclusion: It was concluded that simulation practices were effective in the improvement of students’ selfconfidence and knowledge in emergency case managemen

    Çevrim içi eğitim, son yıllarda teknolojik araç ve gereçlerin eğitim materyali olarak kullanımının artması ile son derece önemli bir kavram olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Bu sebepten ötürü bu çalışmanın amacı, özellikle eğitim araştırmalarında çevrim içi konu alanının incelenerek bibliyometrik profilini ortaya koymaktır. Bu amaç dikkate alınarak bir veri tabanında bulunan bilimsel çalışmalar inceleneceği için gerçekleştirilen araştırmada doküman inceleme yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Araştırma kapsamında incelenen çalışmalar Web of Science veri tabanında; Social Citation Index Expanded, Social Sciences Citation Index ve Arts And Humanities Index'te yer alan eğitim araştırmalarında çevrim içi konulu yayınlardan oluşmuştur. Bu ölçütlere uygun toplam 2734 çalışmaya ulaşılmıştır. Araştırma problemleri gereği bu çalışmaların içerisinde yer alan açık erişim özelliğine sahip 956 çalışma da ayrıca incelemeye tabi tutulmuştur. Açık erişim özelliğine sahip çalışmalar arşivlenirken yaşanan veri kaybı neticesinde 4 çalışma incelemeye alınamamıştır. Elde edilen verilerin analiz edilme sürecinde bibliyometrik analiz yöntemleri kullanılmıştır. Kullanılan bibliyometrik analiz yöntemleri; atıf analizi, bibliyometrik haritalama ve içerik analizi yöntemleridir. 2734 çalışma analiz edilirken bu çalışmaların yıllara ve atıf sayısına göre dağılımı, çalışmaların yayınlandığı dergilerin hangi çeyreklikte yer aldığı, yazar sayıları, alanda öne çıkan kurumlar, Türkiye adresli yayınlarda ülke iş birliği, yazar iş birliği ve anahtar kelimelerin kullanımı dikkate alınmıştır. Açık erişim özelliği bulunan 952 çalışma analiz edilirken ise konu alanı, araştırma yöntemi, örneklem veya çalışma grubu, veri toplama araç ve teknikleri ve veri analiz yöntemleri dikkate alınmıştır. Yapılan analizler neticesinde son yıllarda çevrim içi konulu çalışmaların sayısında ve bu çalışmalara yapılan atıfların sayısında artış olduğu belirlenmiştir. Bunun yanı sıra incelenen çalışmalar içerisinde iki yazarlı çalışmaların yoğunlukta olduğu ve çok yazarlı çalışmaların sayısının ise oldukça az olduğu bulgusuna ulaşılmıştır. İncelenen çalışmalarda yazarların kurumları irdelendiğinde en çok öne çıkan üniversitelerin "Open University" ya da Türkiye'de karşılığı "Açık Öğretim Üniversiteleri" olduğu saptanmıştır. Bu çalışmalarda en çok kullanılan anahtar kelimenin ise "online learning" anahtar kelimesi olduğu bulgusuna ulaşılmıştır. İncelenen açık erişimli çalışmaların sadece eğitim öğretim konu alanına yönelik olmadığı aynı zamanda alan eğitimine yönelik çalışmaların olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Bunun yanı sıra incelenen çalışmalar arasında araştırma yöntemi belirtilmemiş çalışmaların sayısının çok fazla olduğu, bu çalışmalarda örneklem veya çalışma grubu olarak büyük oranda çevrim içi kurs öğrencilerinin tercih edildiği bulgularına da ulaşılmıştır. Yayın ve atıf sayısına yönelik bulgular değerlendirildiğinde çevrim içi konulu çalışmaların yer aldığı alanın genç ve yeni gelişim gösteren bir alan olduğu sonucuna varılmıştır. Bunun yanı sıra ulusal hakemli dergilerin belirli bir formata bağlı kalarak çalışmaları değerlendirdiği ancak uluslararası dergilerde bu durumun incelenen çalışmalar için geçerli olmadığı belirlenmiştir. Açık erişimli çalışmalarda araştırma yöntemine yönelik yapılan inceleme neticesinde araştırma yönteminin belirtilmediği çalışmaların sayısının bu kadar fazla olmasının bu çalışmaya özel bir durum olduğu sonucuna varılmıştır.Online education is an extremely important concept with the increase in the use of technological tools and equipment as educational materials in recent years. For this reason, the aim of this study is to present a bibliometric profile by examining the online subject area, especially in Educational Research. Since scientific studies in a database will be examined taking into account this purpose, the method of document review was used in the research carried out. Studies examined within the scope of the research in the Web of Science database; Social Citation Index Expanded consists of online publications in educational research included in the Social Sciences Citation Index and the Arts and Humanities Index. A total of 2734 studies have been reached in accordance with these criteria. As a result of research problems, 956 studies with open access feature included in these studies were also examined. 4 studies could not be examined as a result of data loss while archiving studies with open access feature. Bibliometric analysis methods were used in the process of analyzing the obtained data. Bibliometric analysis methods used are citation analysis, bibliometric mapping and content analysis methods. 2734 the distribution of these studies by year and number of citations, in which quarter the journals in which the studies were published, the number of authors, the leading institutions in the field, the country cooperation in Turkey-address publications, the author cooperation and the use of keywords were taken into account when analyzing the studies. 952 studies with open access feature were analyzed, while the subject area, research method, sample or working group, data collection tools and techniques and data analysis methods were taken into account. As a result of the analysis, it has been determined that there has been an increase in the number of online studies and the number of references to these studies in recent years. In addition, within the studies studied, it was found that two-author studies were intensive, and the number of multi-author studies was quite small. In the studies examined, it was determined that the universities that stand out most when the authors ' institutions are examined are "Open University" or its equivalent in Turkey is "open teaching universities". In these studies, it was found that the most commonly used keyword is the keyword "online learning". It has been determined that the open access studies examined are not only aimed at the subject area of education, but also at the field education. In addition, among the studies studied, it was also found that the number of studies in which the research method was not specified was too large, and in these studies, largely online course students were preferred as a sample or study group Dec. When evaluating the results for the number of publications and citations, it was concluded that the field in which online studies are located is a young and newly developed area. In addition, it has been determined that national peer-reviewed journals evaluate studies by adhering to a certain format, but in international journals this does not apply to studies studied. As a result of the examination of the research method in open access studies, it was concluded that the number of studies in which the research method is not specified is a special case for this study

    Molecular structure, spectroscopic and DFT studies of 2-(4 ethoxyphenyl) isoindoline-1,3-dione

    2-(4-Ethoxyphenyl)isoindoline-1,3-dione molecule has been characterized by experimental FT-IR and UV-visible spectroscopic methods. Density factional theory calculations of the molecular structure and vibrational spectra have been performed using the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory for the 2-(4-ethoxyphenyl)ignndoline-1,3-dione. The theoretical results arc compared with the experimental observations. Using the TD-DFT methodology, the electronic absorption spectra of the investigated molecule have been calculated. The enthalpy, entropy and heat capacity properties based on the vibrational calculations are calculated at different temperatures. Besides, the frontier orbitals, atomic charges, reactivity descriptors, molecular electrostatic potential, interaction energies and nonlinear optical properties are predicted by the density functional theory calculations

    PVC and POM gripping mechanisms for tension testing of FRP bars

    The present study pertains to the introduction of two new types of grip adaptor for universal testing machines, namely Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) and Polyoxymethylene (POM) grip adaptors, and their application to tension testing of FRP bars with different fiber and surface finish types. The tabs are connected to the FRP bar sample with the help of mechanical anchors, i.e. bolts. These new adaptors offer vital superiorities over the existing end tab designs (anchors with filling material or mechanical anchorage), including the reduction in the time and labor for production, reusability and the mild nature, i.e. low hardness of the tab material, which retards and even prevents peeling and crushing in the gripping regions of an FRP sample. The methods were successfully applied to FRP bars with different types of fiber (CFRP, GFRP and BFRP) and different types of surface texture (ribbed, wrapped, sand-coated and wound). The test results indicated that the both types of end caps prevented slip of the bar, crushing and peeling in the gripping zone.     EĞİTİM FAKÜLTESİ ÖĞRENCİLERİNİN İLETİŞİM BECERİLERİ İLE KONUŞMA KAYGILARI ARASINDAKİ İLİŞKİ

    Bu araştırma, eğitim fakültesinde öğrenim gören öğrencilerin iletişim becerileri ile konuşma kaygıları arasındaki ilişki belirlenerek öğrencilerin iletişim becerileri ve konuşma kaygı puanlarının cinsiyet, sınıf ve akademik çalışmaları takip etme değişkenlerine göre farklılık oluşturup oluşturmadığı da incelenmiştir. Araştırma nicel araştırma yöntemleri arasında yer alan tarama deseni ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. Korkut Owen ve Bugay (2014) tarafından geliştirilen “İletişim Becerileri Ölçeği” ile Yaman ve Suroğlu Sofu (2013) tarafından geliştirilen “Konuşma Kaygısı Ölçeği” kullanılarak eğitim fakültesinde öğrenim gören 399 öğrenciden veriler toplanmıştır. Verilerin analizi, SPSS 22 istatistik paket programı kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Analiz sürecinde iletişim becerileri ve konuşma kaygısı puanlarının cinsiyet ve akademik çalışmaları takip etme değişkenlerine göre değişimi bağımsız örneklem t-testi; sınıf düzeyine göre değişimi ise Tek Yönlü Varyans Analizi testi kullanılarak incelenmiştir. İletişim becerileri ve konuşma kaygısı puanları arasındaki ilişki Pearson Korelasyon katsayısı hesaplanarak incelenmiştir. Elde edilen bulgularda akademik çalışmaları takip eden öğretmen adaylarının iletişim beceri puan ortalamalarının anlamlı bir şekilde daha yüksek; konuşma kaygısı puan ortalamalarının ise daha düşük ve anlamlı olduğu belirlenmiştir. Sınıf düzeyine ve cinsiyete göre puan ortalamalarında bir değişime rastlanmamıştır. Öğretmen adaylarının iletişim becerileri ile konuşma kaygısı puanları arasında orta düzeyde pozitif anlamlı ilişkinin olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Sonuç olarak eğitim fakültesi öğrencilerinin iletişim beceri düzeyleri arttıkça konuşma kaygıları azalmaktadır

    Gabriel-Cromwell aziridination of amino sugars; chiral ferrocenoyl-aziridinyl sugar synthesis and their biological evaluation

    N-sugar substituted chiral aziridines were synthesized via Gabriel-Cromwell reaction. Novel pure diastereomers of aziridine derivatives (4 diastereomers) were readily obtained in high yields and their structures were confirmed by means of 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FT-IR, Mass and optical rotations. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the unique example of N-sugar aziridine synthesis. Diastereomeric effects for prostate (PC3) and cervix (HeLa) cancers were screened and it has been observed that the epimers bearing the same sugars showed different results against PC3 and HeLa cancer cells. The novel sugar aziridines were investigated as promising prodrug candidates for prostate cancer (PC3) therapy. Moreover, the drug likeness calculations (Lipinski's rule, physicochemical properties, lipophilicity, solubility, pharmacokinetics and bioavailability radar) have indicated that the sugar aziridines can be good candidates as oral drugs.Scientific Research Projects Coordina-tion Unit of Krkkale University [2018/032]This work was supported by Scientific Research Projects Coordina-tion Unit of Krkkale University.     Does access location influence outcome of percutaneous nephrolithotomy in staghorn stones?

    Objective: To assess the effect of lower and middle calyceal accesses on the outcomes of percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) in staghorn stones. Study Design: Observational study. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Urology, University of Health Sciences, Izmir Bozyaka Training and Research Hospital, Turkey, from April 2012 to January 2019. Methodology: Patients who underwent PCNL for staghorn stones were retrospectively analysed. The patients were grouped as Group-1 (middle calyceal access) and Group-2 (lower calyceal access). Demographic and stone characteristics (size, density), perioperative and postoperative data, and stone-free rates were compared between these two groups. Postoperative detection of &gt; 4 mm stones was defined as residual stones. Results: There were 249 patients in the study; 108 in middle calyceal access group and 141 in lower calyceal access group. The mean stone burden was 765 (524-1322) and 777 (490-1445) mm2 in group-1 and group-2, respectively (p=0.876). The number of stone-free patients was 50 (46.3%) in middle calyceal access group and 93 (66.0%) in lower calyceal access group. The rate of stone-free status was significantly higher in lower calyceal access group (p=0.002). The overall complication rate was similar between the groups (p=0.132). The binary analysis showed that stone burden, and calyx of entry were predictive factors for success. Conclusion: Although the choice of the calyx to be entered does not affect the complication rate in staghorn stones, the stone-free rate is significantly higher in lower calyceal access. © 2021 College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan.
