Depth-labeled lumbar disc forceps for safe lumbar disc surgery: Our experience with 405 patients

    No full text
Injury of intraabdominal structures by rupturing the anterior longitudinal ligament is a known complication of discectomy. Despite its very low incidence, it has a high mortality. Although various minimally invasive methods are defined for discectomy, no significant reduction in this complication has been achieved. Positioning of the patient, aggressive discectomy, and deep-seated use of disc forceps are important risk factors. The aim of this study is to share our experience with modified instruments to minimize the risk of vascular and visceral injury during discectomy in surgically treated 405 patients with lumbar disc herniation. We routinely perform preoperative depth measurements at the level of lumbar disc herniations for the patients undergoing lumbar disc surgery and check the neighborhood with the prevertebral structures. During the operation, we perform discectomy with custom disc forceps that were labeled with centimeter measurements in accordance with these lengths. We performed discectomy on 405 patients using these forceps between January 2015 and May 2021. In this retrospective study, disc depth measurements differed according to disc levels and gender. Disc depth was longer in males at all lumbar disc levels. It is very important to avoid vascular and visceral injuries for spinal surgeons. For this reason, we believe that knowing the safe preoperative discectomy depth and area and using centimeter-labeled disc forceps is the best method to prevent such complications. © 2022 Ondokuz Mayis Universitesi. In this work, finitely essential supplemented modules are defined and some properties of these modules are investigated. Let M be a finitely essential supplemented module. If M is noetherian, then M is essential supplemented. Let M be a finitely essential supplemented R-module and N be a finitely generated submodule of M. Then M/N is finitely essential supplemented. Let M be a finitely essential supplemented R-module and N be a finitely generated submodule of M with RadM?N. Then M/N have no proper finitely generated essential submodules. Let M be an R-module and V?M. If V is a supplement of a finitely generated essential submodule in M, then V is called an fe-suppplement submodule in M. Let M be an R-module. If every finitely generated essential submodule of M is ?* equivalent to an fe-supplement submodule in M or M have no finitely generated essential submodules, then M is finitely essential supplemented

Calculation of One- and Two-Center Overlap Like Quantum Similarity Integrals over ?^((?)) Exponential Type Functions

    No full text
One- and two-center overlap like quantum similarity integrals over ?^((?)) functions are evaluated using the one-center expansion method. These integrals are expressed through expansion coefficients and usual two-center overlap integrals. The expressions derived in this work have no restrictions for the values of orbital parameters, quantum numbers and internuclear distances. Since these integrals of ?^((?)) functions are calculated for the first time, the comparison is made with literature values obtained from Slater type functions. The computation results are in good agreement with literature values. The algorithm presented in this study could be useful when exponential type functions are employed in quantum similarity measures of atomic and molecular systems

    No full text
Introduction: Iris taochia is an endemic plant in Turkey. Iris species has many biological effects such as antibacterial, antiinflammatory, antioxidant and anticancer properties. Apoptosis is a programmed cell death and this mechanism regulates the death of cancer cells. Purpose: The aim of our work is to investigate how the Iris taochia extracts affect the apoptotic activity in the MCF7 cells. Methods: Cytotoxic dose and cell viability is determined by the MTT assay. Bad, Bax, Bcl-2, Bcl-W, Bid, Bim, Caspase 3, Caspase 8, CD40, CD40L, cIAP-2, CytoC, DR6, Fas, FasL, HSP27, HSP60, HSP70, HTRA, IGF-I, IGF-II, IGFBP-1, IGFBP-2, IGFBP-3, IGFBP-4, IGFBP-5, IGFBP-6, IGF-1sR, Livin, p21, p27, p53, SMAC, Survivin, sTNF-R1, sTNF-R2, TNF-alpha, TNF-beta, TRAILR-1, TRAILR-2, TRAILR-3, TRAILR-4 and XIAP proteins were measured by the membrane array kit. Results: Iris taochia extracts exhibited significant cytotoxic effects on MCF7 cells and IC50 values ranging from 1.56 to 100 mu g/mL. Our results indicate that MeOH extract ofIris taochia in MCF7 cells may be a regulator of cell death proteins, cell cycle and growth factors. DCM and EtOH extracts of Iris taochia have a limited effect on MCF7 cells, especially, HSPs, which play a significant role in chemoresistance, downregulating DCM and EtOH extracts of Iris taochia, whereas ligands and receptors of extrinsic apoptotic pathway are upregulated by these extracts. Conclusion: This is the first study to investigate the cytotoxic and apoptotic effect ofIris taochia extracts on MCF7 cells. Results also showed that Iris taochia reduced cell viability and induced apoptotic pathways as a potential regulator of cancer cell death.Amasya University Research Fund [FMB-BAP-17-0265]This work was supported by the Amasya University Research Fund [project no: FMB-BAP-17-0265]

    No full text
We investigated the serum anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH), oestrogen and progesterone levels in spontaneously conceiving pregnant women, diagnosed for hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), in the first trimester. Pregnant women admitted at Hospital between 5 and 12 gestational weeks and treated for HG were compared, in this prospective case-control study, to a control group. The serum AMH, oestradiol, and progesterone values of both groups were evaluated and compared, and potential correlations were calculated. The serum AMH values were significantly higher in the HG group than the control group (3.15 +/- 1.51 ng/mL vs. 2.27 +/- 1.20 ng/mL; p = 0.012). No significant difference in the two groups was about serum oestradiol and progesterone values (p = 0.264, p = 0.235). In the HG group, there was no significant correlation between AMH and oestradiol (p = 0.570). However, a significant positive correlation was determined between AMH and progesterone (p = 0.050). The area under the ROC curve (AUC) was 0.669 and the cut-off value was 2.65 ng/ml with sensitivity of 58.3% and specificity of 66.7% for AMH in pregnant women with HG. A correlation between AMH high values and unexplained HG was detected in spontaneous pregnancies in the first trimester. High AMH levels may play a role in HG etiopathogenesis, especially in pregnant women with low progesterone levels.Impact statement What is already known on this subject? Aetiological causes of Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) include hormonal, immunological, genetic, and psychological issues. However, no conclusive etiopathogenesis to explain the pathophysiological mechanism of HG has been stated. What do the results of this study add? Authors focussed on investigation a possible correlation between pregnant hormones and the HG pathogenesis, prevalent in the first trimester, when hormones are produced by either the placenta or corpus luteum. High anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) levels may play a role in HG etiopathogenesis, especially in pregnant women with low progesterone levels. What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? A serum AMH level of >= 2.65 mg/mL could be predictive for the development of HG in the first trimester of a spontaneous pregnancy. Basing on these findings, more selective pharmacological treatments could be administrated to these patients

Thermal and Sound Insulation Performances of Building Panels Produced by Recycling Waste Fibres of Yarn Factories

    No full text
Recycling of materials such as textiles, plastics, glasses, papers and metals instead of storing, burying or burning results a reduction in raw material demands of industry. This means also that a reduction in amount of money, time and energy spent on to obtain raw materials. From this point of view, the main purpose of this study was determined as the production of textile surfaces with high waste fiber content by recycling textile fiber wastes in sizes that cannot be used in the textile manufacturing industry again In this sense, various composite plates that can be used for sound and heat insulation on the exterior and interior surfaces of the buildings were produced by using unconventional methods from the waste fibers varying in lenghts of 1-25 mm. The effect of changed parameters such as density, fiber type, waste fiber ratio and aluminum foil layer addition were investigated. As a result of the tests, it was observed that the thermal conductivity coefficient values of the all produced composite panels varied between 0.033-0.038 W/mK, and the sound transmission loss values between 24.2-32.6 dB

    No full text
In this study, heavy metals (Cr, Pb, Zn, Cu, and Cd) contents of five Brassicaceae species grown in four different locations in Turkey were determined, mapped, and interpreted. Spatial analyses of the collected data were conducted in GIS, and thematic maps for average heavy metal accumulations including root, stem, and leaf of each species was developed. The biomonitoring potentials of species was assessed based on the statistical analyses results of the different localities. The heavy metal deposition characteristics of the plants showed differences. The most accumulated heavy metal was Zn, while Cd was the least accumulated. Capsella bursa-pastoris had the highest Cr and Cu accumulation compared to other species. Lepidium draba on the other hand, accumulated Pb and Zn at most. Sisymbrium loeselii had the highest Cd accumulation compared to the other species. The results of the present study have indicated that Lepidium draba (Zn and Pb), Capsella bursa-pastoris (Cr and Cu) and Sisymbrium loeselii (Cd) can be safely used for biomonitoring studies.Amasya University BAP unit [FMB-BAP 16-0167]The authors would like to express their gratitude to Amasya University BAP unit (FMB-BAP 16-0167) for funding the current research.
