Classification of arithmetic mental task performances using EEG and ECG signals
In this study, a classification is done for electroencephalogram (EEG) and electrocardiogram (ECG) records belong to arithmetic tasks with good and bad performances. Thus, it is aimed to evaluate the differentiation in mental arithmetic activity performance using EEG and ECG signals. First of all, EEG signals, taken from 36 subjects and labeled as good and bad performance according to the number of procedures performed within the same period, are divided into sections of 10 s. Sub-components are obtained using wavelet transform for segmented electroencephalogram and electrocardiogram recordings. The feature set is created by calculating the energy of the wavelet components from electroencephalogram recordings belong to 19 channels. The obtained feature set is classified by using logistic regression, support vector machines (SVM), linear discriminant analysis, and k-nearest neighborhood (k-NN) methods. The feature extraction process is repeated for electrocardiogram signals recorded during the arithmetic mental task, resulting in an extended feature set. The classification process in the expanded space is repeated using the same features. As a result of the analysis, it is observed that wavelet-based features are effective in determining mental activity performance. High accuracy classification is done by k-NN and SVM, respectively. For only EEG signals, the best classification result is obtained with k-NN with 97.22% accuracy, and for EEG and ECG signals are used together, the best result is obtained with k-NN with 99% accuracy. Features extracted from ECG signals have increased classification accuracy
Bakara Suresi 2/81.
Effect of Gluten-Free Diet on Serum Antioxidant Levels in Children with Celiac
Objective: Celiac disease (CD) is an inflammatory condition of the small intestine triggered by the consumption of gluten. A strict gluten-free diet (GFD) is the only treatment that can eliminate CD complications. It was aimed to evaluate the effect of a gluten-free diet on serum total glutathione (tGSH) level, superoxide dismutase (SOD), myeloperoxida (MPO), paroxanase (PON-1) and aryl esterase (ARE) activity in patients with celiac disease, an autoimmune disease. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted with 68 participants, 39 of whom were celiac and 29 were healthy. Two groups were formed in patients with celiac disease as newly diagnosed and previously diagnosed and following a gluten-free diet. Blood samples were taken from all participants and tGSH, SOD, MPO, PON-1, and ARE measurements were made spectrophotometrically from serum samples. Results: While no significant change was observed in tGSH, SOD, and ARE levels, MPO activity was observed to be significantly lower in celiac patients compared to healthy controls, while this decrease was found to be higher in the newly diagnosed group. While PON-1 activity was significantly lower in newly diagnosed patients compared to the control group, it was higher in the gluten-compatible diet group. Conclusion: Low MPO values in celiac patients may be insufficient to function by creating oxidative stress in inflammation. While PON-1 values are significantly lower in newly diagnosed celiacs, it can be said that they reach normal values with adherence to a gluten-free diet. © 2023 Istanbul University Press. Kan Dolaşımı İnfeksiyonlarının Etiyolojisini Tahmin Etmede Prokalsitonin ve C-Reaktif Proteinin Rolü
Introduction: Inflammatory indicators such as procalcitonin (PCT) and C-reactive protein (CRP) may vary depend-ing on the etiology of bloodstream infections. In this study, we aimed to investigate the role of serum PCT and CRP levels in predicting etiology in bloodstream infections. Methods: Blood cultures sent to our hospital’s microbiology laboratory between January 2018 and July 2021 were retrospectively evaluated, and 501 patients with positive blood cultures were included in the study. According to blood culture growth, the patients were divided into Gram-negative bacteria (GNB), Gram-positive bacteria (GPB), fungus, Enterobacterales, and non-fermenter groups. We investigated whether there was a significant difference in the PCT and CRP values between the groups. Student’s t-test was used to compare normally distributed numerical data, and the Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare non-normally distributed numerical data. The median value for continuous variables in each group was given as the first quartile (Q1) and third quartile (Q3). A comparison of cat-egorical data was done with ?2 test. Results: The PCT median value was found to be significantly higher in the GNB group compared with the GNB-GPB group. There was no significant difference between any of the groups for the CRP median value. In the GNB-GPB group comparison, the area under the curve for PCT cut-off value of 0.5 ng/mL was found to be 0.675 in the ROC curve (95% confidence interval=0.623-0.726; p<0.001), and the optimal cut-off value was found to be 1.45 ng/mL with 75% sensitivity, 53% specificity. Conclusions: Procalcitonin was found to be a marker that can be used to differentiate Gram-negative bacteremia from Gram-positive bacteremia. We concluded that CRP cannot be used to predict the etiology of bacteremia. © 2023, DOC Design and Informatics Co. Ltd.. All rights reserved
Thamnolecania yunusii (Ramalinaceae) - A new species of lichenised fungus from Horseshoe Island (Antarctic Peninsula)
The new terricolous lichen species Thamnolecania yunusii Halici, Gullu, Bolukbasi & Kahraman, which is characterised by its cream to greyish brown granulose-crustose thallus without vegetative propagules, is described from Horseshoe Island in the South-West Antarctic Peninsula region. All Thamnolecania species are known only from the Antarctic. The only species of the genus with a crustose thallus is T. racovitzae, but it differs from T. yunusii by growing on rocks, having an effuse to subeffigurate thallus that is sometimes isidiate and with shorter and narrower ascospores (c. 15 x 3.5 mu m vs. 15.5-19.5 x 3.5-5.5 mu m). The nrITS, mtSSU and RPB1 gene regions of the new species were studied and the phylogenetic position of the species was shown to be in the same clade as Thamnolecania gerlachei, T. brialmontii and T. racovitzae, but occurs on a different branch from these species. As T. yunusii is an Antarctic endemic, like the other Thamnolecania species, and most of the morphological characters fit well with this genus, we describe this new species under the genus Thamnolecania.Presidency of the Republic of Turkey; Ministry of Industry and TechnologyThis study was carried out under the auspices of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey, supported by the Ministry of Industry and Technology, coordinated by TUBITAK MAM Polar Research Institute

The effect of prenatal anxiety on prenatal attachment in high-risk pregnant women and related factors: a cross-sectional study
High-risk pregnant women experience stress and anxiety. Anxiety may affect prenatal attachment. This study aimed to examine the effect of anxiety on prenatal attachment in high-risk pregnant women. The study was crosssectional and conducted on 290 high-risk pregnant women who applied to the perinatology outpatient clinic of a university hospital between February and July 2022. The data were collected with the descriptive information sheet, Prenatal Attachment Inventory (PAI), and Perinatal Anxiety Screening Scale (PASS). Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal Wallis-H, and Spearman's Correlation tests were used to analyze the data. The mean age of the examined pregnant women was 28.12 +/- 5.36, and most of them were multigravida (65.5 percent) and in the third trimester (80.7 percent). The PAI and PASS mean scores were 64.09 +/- 11.31 and 27.98 +/- 16.52, respectively. There was a weak positive correlation between anxiety and prenatal attachment (r =.227, p <.001). The levels of prenatal attachment were higher in primigravidas and women with no children. Also, the anxiety levels of pregnant women in the third trimester were lower. Health professionals should evaluate the prenatal attachment and anxiety levels of high-risk pregnant women, and consider obstetrical factors that may influence both prenatal attachment and anxiety levels
