Collective writing: the continuous struggle for meaning-making
Get PDFThis paper is a summary of philosophy, theory, and practice arising from collective writing experiments conducted between 2016 and 2022 in the community associated with the Editors’ Collective and more than 20 scholarly journals. The main body of the paper summarises the community’s insights into the many faces of collective writing. Appendix 1 presents the workflow of the article’s development. Appendix 2 lists approximately 100 collectively written scholarly articles published between 2016 and 2022. Collective writing is a continuous struggle for meaning-making, and our research insights merely represent one milestone in this struggle. Collective writing can be designed in many different ways, and our workflow merely shows one possible design that we found useful. There are many more collectively written scholarly articles than we could gather, and our reading list merely offers sources that the co-authors could think of. While our research insights and our attempts at synthesis are inevitably incomplete, ‘Collective Writing: The Continuous Struggle for Meaning-Making’ is a tiny theoretical steppingstone and a useful overview of sources for those interested in theory and practice of collective writing

Mental disorders among a sample of children from Baghdad: sociodemographic and referral pathway
No full textBackground: Despite the awareness of the ongoing socio-political and economic situation on the mental health of children in Iraq, no systematic studies have been carried out. In fact, interest in children and
adolescents‘ mental health is a comparatively recent phenomenon in Iraq.
Objective: To explore the patterns of mental disorders and the referral pathway among children attending outpatient clinic of paediatrics psychiatry in Children Welfare Hospital in Baghdad.
Design: a cross sectional study design
that explored the most common presentation and the socio-demographic variables of 186 children (87 from AI Sadr City) who presented at the child and adolescent psychiatric outpatient department at the Children Welfare Hospital, Baghdad, Iraq. DSM 5 criteria were applied for diagnoses, in addition to the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS), and the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale. The Pearson chi-square test was used to detect significant associations between categorical variables.
Result: communication disorder was the most frequent diagnosis (25.8%) followed by both Intellectual disability and ASD (21%). speech delay was the most frequent cause of referral (58.1%), then externalizing behaviours (21.5%) and internalizing disorders in only (5.4%) of them. Most of the referrals were by paediatricians (33.9%).
Conclusion: somatic metaphors of distress seem to be the preferred idiom of distress in this population. Whilst this is culturally expected, it is important that other presentations are not overlooked. The authors advocate for urgent awareness-based and psycho-educational programs for health workers, schools, faith healers, and the public in Baghdad including Al Sadr City
EgoActive: integrated wireless wearable sensors for capturing infant egocentric auditory–visual statistics and autonomic nervous system function ‘in the wild’
Get PDFThere have been sustained efforts toward using naturalistic methods in developmental science to measure infant behaviors in the real world from an egocentric perspective because statistical regularities in the environment can shape and be shaped by the developing infant. However, there is no user-friendly and unobtrusive technology to densely and reliably sample life in the wild. To address this gap, we present the design, implementation and validation of the EgoActive platform, which addresses limitations of existing wearable technologies for developmental research. EgoActive records the active infants’ egocentric perspective of the world via a miniature wireless head-mounted camera concurrently with their physiological responses to this input via a lightweight, wireless ECG/acceleration sensor. We also provide software tools to facilitate data analyses. Our validation studies showed that the cameras and body sensors performed well. Families also reported that the platform was comfortable, easy to use and operate, and did not interfere with daily activities. The synchronized multimodal data from the EgoActive platform can help tease apart complex processes that are important for child development to further our understanding of areas ranging from executive function to emotion processing and social learning
Compact UHF RFID balun-like integrated tag antenna for long range detection of water bottles
Get PDFA compact, flexible, long-range, and impedance transformer balun-like integrated UHF RFID tag antenna is proposed for the detection of water bottles. To alleviate the performance of a tag antenna in close proximity to a high dielectric material such as water, the radiating element of the tag antenna uses folded, unbalanced strips made of balun-like arms wrapped around the tag’s body. As a result, a wide bandwidth with reasonably good radiation resistance is achieved. The tag’s body comprises dual-loops for the impedance matching to the tag chip. This leads to a long read range of 13.33 m; > 5.83 m compared to other state-of-the-art designs. The proposed tag antenna conforms to a small footprint by wrapping the balun-like arms around the tag’s body, which results in a compact form. The tag is fabricated, and the results reasonably agree with simulations
Quantum Bohmian-inspired potential to model non–Gaussian time series and Its application in financial markets
Get PDFWe have implemented quantum modeling mainly based on Bohmian mechanics to study time series that contain strong coupling between their events. Compared to time series with normal densities, such time series are associated with rare events. Hence, employing Gaussian statistics drastically underestimates the occurrence of their rare events. The central objective of this study was to investigate the effects of rare events in the probability densities of time series from the point of view of quantum measurements. For this purpose, we first model the non-Gaussian behavior of time series using the multifractal random walk (MRW) approach. Then, we examine the role of the key parameter of MRW, λ, which controls the degree of non-Gaussianity, in quantum potentials derived for time series. Our Bohmian quantum analysis shows that the derived potential takes some negative values in high frequencies (its mean values), then substantially increases, and the value drops again for rare events. Thus, rare events can generate a potential barrier in the high-frequency region of the quantum potential, and the effect of such a barrier becomes prominent when the system transverses it. Finally, as an example of applying the quantum potential beyond the microscopic world, we compute quantum potentials for the S&P financial market time series to verify the presence of rare events in the non-Gaussian densities and demonstrate deviation from the Gaussian case

It facilitates real-time tracking of inventory, enables proactive demand forecasting, and streamlines production and distribution processes. Moreover, it enhances transparency and trust by providing stakeholders with access to accurate and up-to-date information. However, despite the potential advantages, implementing a DSC is not without challenges. Hence, the digital supply chain represents a way forward for organizations seeking to thrive in the digital age. Embracing digital technologies and leveraging data-driven insights can empower businesses to achieve greater efficiency, responsiveness, and competitiveness.
