    How the Human Resource (HR) Function Adds Strategic Value: A Relational Perspective of the HR Function

    In the present article, we propose the concept of the HR function\u27s relational activities and examine its influence on the firm\u27s human capital resources (HCRs) and performance. Integrating insights from various streams of research in strategic human resource management (HRM) and strategic human capital, we develop a relational perspective of the HR function and propose the relational activities as the HR function\u27s advisory and informative activities toward its internal stakeholders (i.e., line managers, employees, and senior managers) to help the stakeholders meet their goals and needs. In our framework, we theorize how the HR function\u27s relational activities lead to superior firm performance by enhancing the firm\u27s HCRs and identify the firm\u27s strategic HR systems and human capital losses as factors that complement and necessitate the HR function\u27s relational activities, respectively. Using a five-wave, nationally representative panel dataset covering 1415 firm observations, we find robust support for our hypotheses: the HR function\u27s relational activities were positively related to HCRs, which was more pronounced when coupled with high levels of strategic HR systems and human capital losses. The HCRs, in turn, transmitted the effects of the relational activities on the firm\u27s subsequent operational and financial performance. Overall, these findings develop strategic HRM theory by contributing a more comprehensive conceptualization of the HR function\u27s role in the strategic HRM process and by revealing its effects on firm performance along with key moderators

    An Ontology Design Pattern for Role-Dependent Names

    We present an ontology design pattern for modeling Names as part of Roles, to capture scenarios where an Agent performs different Roles using different Names associated with the different Roles. Examples of an Agent performing a Role using different Names are rather ubiquitous, e.g., authors who write under different pseudonyms, or different legal names for citizens of more than one country.     Commonsense Ontology Micropatterns

    The previously introduced Modular Ontology Modeling methodology (MOMo) attempts to mimic the human analogical process by using modular patterns to assemble more complex concepts. To support this, MOMo organizes ontology design patterns (ODPs) into design libraries, which are programmatically queryable. However, a major bottleneck to large-scale deployment of MOMo is the (to-date) limited availability of ready-to-use ODPs. At the same time, Large Language Models (LLMs) have quickly become a source of common knowledge and, in some cases, replacing search engines for questions. In this paper, we thus present a collection of 104 ODPs representing often occurring nouns, curated from the common-sense knowledge available in LLMs, organized into a fully-annotated modular ontology design library ready for use with MOMo

    Towards Understanding the Impact of Schema on Knowledge Graph Embeddings

    Knowledge graphs (KGs) enable researchers to understand a set of data within a domain of research and how different aspects of the data may connect. The methodology used to design and develop a KG varies depending on the use case. When designing a schema for a KG, also called an ontology, the developers can describe data in a rich or shallow manner. A shallow approach has uses for when there is no significant data to describe with data values, whereas a rich approach more closely mirrors reality by providing layers in the ontology to the data description. In this paper, we examine the impact that the complexity a KG schema has on their corresponding knowledge graph embeddings (KGE), where complexity varies across shallow or rich approaches for entity-to-entity relationships. We utilize the Deep Graph Library on two schemas over the same Wright State University’s CORE Scholar data. Preliminary work has shown that there are indeed differences in performance, but further investigation is needed to determine the causal mechanisms, as well as to perform additional data cleaning

    Association Between Gallstone Disease and Kidney Stone Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

    Background and aims: Gallstone disease (GSD) and kidney stone disease (KSD) have increased due to lifestyle in recent decades. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the association between these two diseases. Methods: A comprehensive electronic database search was conducted before August 25, 2024. This systematic review and meta-analysis included observational studies. The meta-analysis employed a random-effects model to compute the overall summary estimates of the association between GSD and KSD using risk ratios with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) as the primary measure of the effect size. Heterogeneity was evaluated using chi-square tests, the I² statistic, and forest plots. Publication bias was assessed through Begg’s and Egger’s tests. A P value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant, and all analyses were performed using Stata 17 software. Results: The meta-analysis included 9 studies encompassing 982847 participants. The pooled analysis revealed a statistically significant association between GSD and KSD, with a risk of 1.78 (95% CI: 1.572.03, P≤0.001). Begg’s and Egger’s tests demonstrated no significant bias (Begg’s test P=0.835, Egger’s test P=0.812). Variables such as study year, sample size, mean age of participants, mean follow-up, and study quality as determined by the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) were examined, but none could significantly impact heterogeneity (P\u3e0.10). Conclusion: This systematic review and meta-analysis provide evidence of a significant association between GSD and KSD. Therefore, further investigation into the underlying mechanisms and potential risk factors is necessary

    Usage of Almond and Thyme Oils for the Enhancement of Shelf Life of Different Fish Species

    Fish is an important source of protein for millions of people around the globe and it\u27s often a healthier option compared to some other meats. However, the fish industry is facing a storage challenge in the form of rapid spoilage and deterioration of freshness due to bacterial growth and enzymatic activity. The usage of oils in fish can enhance shelf life by creating a protective barrier. This research was designed to see the effects of thyme and almond oil on nutritional profile and shelf life of fish. The three fish species rohu (Labeo rohita), Mali (Wallago attu) and Dola (Channa punctata) were used. Two 15 % and 25 % nano-emulsions of almond and thyme oils were prepared, coated on fish meat samples (3-5 cm) and kept for twenty-one days in refrigerator at 4℃. A proximate analysis such as determination of moisture, ash, protein, and fat contents of storage samples were carried out at 7th and 21st days. It was noticed that ash, protein, and fat contents increased with increasing storage period while there was no changes noticed in pH of samples with increasing period. It was observed that control sample (without oils) contained lowest ash, protein and fat contents and highest moisture contents. A statistical analysis was carried out by one way ANOVA and significant differences were noticed among the control and oil coated samples at value \u3c 0.05. The results showed L. rohita contained highest protein (15.43 ± 0.39) and fat contents (3.78 ± 1.00) at 25 % nano-emulsion of thyme while W. attu contained highest fat (3.70±1.03) and ash content (2.86 ± 0.56) at 25 % thyme. A high pH was noticed in C. punctata as compared to other experimental fish species. It was concluded fish quality enhanced under storage period with oil coated samples particularly with 25 % nano-emulsion of thyme oil

The growing use of this renewable resource serves as a driving force for the development of sustainable products, particularly fully biodegradable composites suitable for technical and engineering purposes. Industrially, esparto grass finds economic use as a raw material for paper production and composite materials, contributing to the creation of high-energy materials using bio-resources like microcrystalline and emergent cellulose. Esparto grass emerges as a natural, renewable, and biodegradable raw material, aligning with global movements toward sustainable development. The increased incorporation of esparto fibers into industrial processes reflects a promising step toward the creation of competitively innovative and eco-friendly industrial products

    Behavioural Distributions of Macrophytes in an Oxbow Lake, Dhir Beel With Reference to its Water Quality in Assam, India

    An Oxbow lake, Dhir Beel, situated in Western Assam, India, stands as a habitat for a plethora of plant and animal species, nurturing a vibrant ecosystem within its freshwater environs. This study sought to address concerns surrounding pollution, encroachment, siltation, and overfishing within Dhir Beel. Over a span of three years (2016-2019), samples were meticulously collected from five distinct sites to analyze both water quality and macrophyte populations. Employing the APHA method, the physico-chemical parameters of the water were evaluated, while a comprehensive identification process was undertaken to categorize the macrophytes. These aquatic plants, spanning dicots, monocots, and pteridophytes, were classified into various habitats including Emergent Aquatic Macrophytes (EAM), Free Floating Aquatic Macrophytes (FFA), Marshy Aquatic Macrophytes (MAM), and Submerged Aquatic Macrophytes (SAM), observed across both summer and winter seasons. The findings unveiled a total of 82 species, with dicots, monocots, and pteridophytes comprising 38, 40, and 4 species respectively. Oxbow lake, Dhir Beel exhibited diverse habitat forms, with EAM and FFA each occupying 25 % of the habitat, while MAM and SAM collectively represented 24 %. Diversity analysis showcased substantial macrophyte diversity underscoring the imperative for strategic conservation efforts within this ecologically precious oxbow lake
