    Manufacture of ceramic bodies by using a mud waste from the TiO2 pigment industry

    The main objective of this paper is focused in the use of a waste generated by the TiO2 pigment industry, ilmenite mud (MUD), on the production of ceramic bodies. These ceramic bodies were produced from mixtures of a commercial red stoneware mixture (RSM) with different concentrations of mud (3, 5, 7, 10, 30 and 50 wt.%). The samples were sintered to simulate a fast firing process. The sintering behaviour of the fired samples was evaluated by linear shrinkage, means of water absorption, apparent porosity and bulk density. Both green powder and fired samples were characterised by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC/TG), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and bending strength measurements. Moreover, the activity concentrations of radionuclides were measured by high resolution low-background gamma spectrometry, because this mud is a NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material) waste. Finally, the TCLP leaching test (Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure, USEPA) was performed to assess the risks of use tiles from an environmental perspective. The results demonstrated that MUD can be successfully valorised in the manufacture of red stoneware ceramic bodies with similar or even better technological properties than commercialmaterials used currently

A complete genome was obtained by sequencing with Nanopore long read technology. The genome consists of a chromosome of 1506092 bp and a plasmid of 42437 bp, presenting a GC content of 36 % and 31 %, respectively.     Peletización de cascarilla de laminación y estudio termodinámico de un proceso de piroconsolidación

    Proyecto de fin de carrera Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos (UPM)Este estudio se realiza para mejorar el proceso de reducción con hidrógeno de los pelets obtenidos a partir de la cascarilla de laminación. Así se podrá tener una idea de las ventajas y limitaciones de esta nueva vía de reciclado de la cascarilla. Posteriormente se realizará un proceso de piroconsolidación a 800ºC y se llegará a un pelet final que será también caracterizado para obtener su composición química y composición mineralógica iniciales, resistencia a compresión y porosidad de los pelets. En base a la composición mineralógica se realizará el estudio termodinámico. Se discutirán todos los factores que influyen y explican el proceso de piroconsolidación. Por último, el objetivo es perfeccionar el proceso de reducción mediante hidrógeno de los pelets producidos a partir de la cascarilla, para comprender mejor las ventajas e inconvenientes de este método de reciclaje. Se ha empleado el software FactSage 8.3 para el análisis termodinámico, utilizando los módulos Reaction, Predom, Equilib y Phase Diagram, para examinar la evolución de las reacciones, los diagramas de fases y el equilibrio termodinámico. Adicionalmente, se han llevado a cabo pruebas de Difracción de Rayos X y análisis mediante espectroscopía Mossbauer para determinar la composición mineralógica y las fases existentes en la cascarilla durante las distintas etapas del proceso. Los resultados obtenidos indican que la cascarilla de laminación compuesta principalmente por wustita (FeO) y en menor medida por hematites (α-Fe2O3), magnetita (Fe3O4), requiere un tratamiento de piroconsolidación para su correcta reducción por hidrógeno. Gracias a este tratamiento de piroconsolidación se evita un alto consumo de Hidrógeno y se obtiene hierro metálico.Peer reviewe

    Estudio Multiescala de Nanorecubrimientos con Inhibidores Ecológicos de la Corrosión para Aleaciones de Magnesio

    XVII Congreso Nacional de Materiales, CNMAT 2024La elevada susceptibilidad a la corrosión del magnesio y sus aleaciones limita su uso más extensivo en ciertas aplicaciones como aeronáutica, automoción y dispositivos móviles. El uso más extensivo de aleaciones de magnesio en transporte reduciría considerablemente el peso y por consiguiente el consumo de combustibles fósiles reduciendo la emisión de CO2. En el caso del vehículo eléctrico, la reducción de peso aumenta la autonomía y reduce el consumo de energía. La tecnología sol-gel se identifica como una solución efectiva para este problema. En este estudio, partiendo del diseño a medida de nanorecubrimientos con inhibidores ecológicos de la corrosión, se realiza un estudio a multiescala de varias combinaciones de sistemas matriz-inhibidor que podrían reemplazar algunos de los métodos de pretratamientos convencionales basados aún en pequeñas concentraciones de compuestos tóxicos, como los cromatos o el benzotrialzol, que plantean problemas medioambientales y de salud. Para realizar una comparativa, también se modificó un conjunto de nanorecubrimientos sol-gel con un dopante común, el benzotriazol (BTA), a pesar de sus riesgos ambientales y de salud conocidos. Se procesaron soluciones sol-gel basadas en distintos precursores órgano-inorgánicos, dopadas con inhibidores metal-orgánicos, orgánicos o una mezcla de ambos y se depositaron sobre sustratos de la aleación de magnesio AZ61 mediante inmersión-extracción a velocidad controlada, creando nanorecubrimentos transparentes. Posteriormente se realizó una completa caracterización morfológica, físico-química y electroquímica a multiescala para estudiar la protección frente a la corrosión ofrecida por los nanorecubrimientos. Se estudió el efecto protector-inhibidor a distintos tiempos de inmersión en soluciones de distinta concentración en cloruros (NaCl 0.006 M y 0.6 M) utilizando un enfoque electroquímico a múltiples escalas (macro, meso, micro y submicroescala). En términos de protección activa frente a la corrosión, se obtuvieron resultados similares con nanorecubrimientos dopados con acetato de lantano o isopropóxido de lantano. Sin, embargo, el método de síntesis de los geles dopados con acetato es mucho más sencillo y económico, por lo que, desde un punto de vista práctico, estos nanorecubrimientos podrían ser más interesantes. Por otra parte, se obtuvieron resultados muy satisfactorios con geles dopados con L-Cys, no tóxica, en comparación con los dopados con BTA. Así mismo, se obtuvieron interesantes resultados acerca del efecto sinérgico de la combinación de inhibidores y la eficiencia de los inhibidores dependiendo de la concentración de cloruros en el medio.     Food globalization in the early modern period: isotopic evidence of maize introduction and dietary diversification on Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain (16th–18th ce)

We also acknowledge the editors and anonymous reviewers for their valuable feedback on an earlier version of this paper.Objectives: The European expansion of the Early Modern period led to unparalleled intercontinental plant and animal translocations. This study explores the dietary changes resulting from the movement of plants and animals, such as maize, into local diets beyond the Americas. The analysis focuses on the Canary Islands (Spain), which play a key role in the transatlantic trade network linking Europe, Africa, and America. Materials and Methods: In this study, stable isotope dietary (δ13Ccollagen, δ15Ncollagen, and δ13Cenamel) analyses of 66 human and 42 terrestrial animal samples from several sites in Gran Canaria, dated between the 16th and 18th centuries, were used to trace the introduction of nonnative C4 plants into the diet. Additionally, Bayesian modeling through FRUITS is applied to deepen our understanding of this dietary transition. This approach provides an evolutionary perspective on changes in dietary practices over time. Results: The isotopic data indicate a gradual increase in C4 plant consumption and evidence of manuring in cultivated fields from the 16th to the 18th centuries. This dietary shift, characterized by the introduction of new foodstuffs, is reflected in less negative carbon and elevated nitrogen isotope values in both human (δ13Ccollagen, δ15Ncollagen, and δ13Cenamel) and animal samples (δ13Ccollagen and δ15Ncollagen). Discussion: The findings suggest the slow yet progressive incorporation of C4 plants, most likely maize, into the local food system, which coincides with the introduction of other new crops, livestock, and innovative agricultural techniques such as manuring.     Working Document to be presented to the Working Group for the Celtic Seas Ecoregion ICES WGCSE 7-16 May 2025, ICES HQ, Copenhagen, Denmark.This working document presents the results on haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) and whiting (Merlangius merlangius) caught in the Porcupine Spanish Groundfish Survey (SP-PORC-Q3) in 2024. Biomass, abundance, distribution and length frequency are analyzed. The biomass of M. aeglefinus decreased whereas M. merlangius increased slightly. Signs of recruits of M. aeglefinus was found. Seven specimens of the incidental species Solea solea and 11 of Pleuronectes platessa were found in three hauls on the northeastern area of the Irish shelf. During the 2024 survey, the vessel suffered a major breakdown which forced the cancellation of the final hauls of the survey. As a result of this breakdown, certain areas of the campaign, mainly the south-eastern sector, could not be completed. However, in the case of the species covered in this WD, species with a rather shallow distribution, in terms of the deep range covered, the effect of this breakdown did not have a major impact as these species are very scarce in the layers deeper than 450m.Fondo Europeo Marítimo, de Pesca y de AcuiculturaPeer reviewe

    Film thickness dependence of nanoscale arrangement of a chiral electron donor in its blends with an achiral electron acceptor

    The nanoscale chiral arrangement in a bicomponent organic material system comprising donor and acceptor small molecules is shown to depend on the thickness of a film that is responsive to chiral light in an optoelectronic device. In this bulk heterojunction, a previously unreported chiral bis(diketopyrrolopyrrole) derivative was combined with an achiral non-fullerene acceptor. The optical activity of the chiral compound is dramatically different in the pure material and the composite, showing how the electron acceptor influences the donor's arrangement compared with the pure molecule. Mueller matrix polarimetric imaging shows the authenticity of this effect and the homogeneity of short range chiral orientations between the molecules, as well as more heterogeneous short and longer range arrangements in the films observed in linear dichroic and birefringent effects. The two-dimensional circular dichroism (CD) maps and spectra show the uniformity of the short range supramolecular interactions both in spun-cast films on quartz and blade-coated films on photovoltaic device substrates, where evidence for the chiral arrangement is uniquely provided by the synchrotron CD measurements. The external quantum efficiency of the devices depends upon the handedness of the light used to excite them and the film thickness, that influences the supramolecular arrangement and organization in the film, and determines the selectivity for left or right circularly polarised light. The difference in external quantum efficiency of the photovoltaic devices between the two handedness' of light correlates with the apparent differential absorbance (g-factor) of the films.We thank most warmly Dr Flavia Pop for preliminary syntheses of asymmetric DPP monomers and Dr Christopher Mellor for the VASE data analysis.     DELLA proteins recruit the Mediator complex subunit MED15 to coactivate transcription in land plants

    DELLA proteins are negative regulators of the gibberellin response pathway in angiosperms, acting as central hubs that interact with hundreds of transcription factors (TFs) and regulators to modulate their activities. While the mechanism of TF sequestration by DELLAs to prevent DNA binding to downstream targets has been extensively documented, the mechanism that allows them to act as coactivators remains to be understood. Here, we demonstrate that DELLAs directly recruit the Mediator complex to specific loci in Arabidopsis, facilitating transcription. This recruitment involves DELLA amino-terminal domain and the conserved MED15 KIX domain. Accordingly, partial loss of MED15 function mainly disrupted processes known to rely on DELLA coactivation capacity, including cytokinin-dependent regulation of meristem function and skotomorphogenic response, gibberellin metabolism feedback, and flavonol production. We have also found that the single DELLA protein in the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha is capable of recruiting MpMED15 subunits, contributing to transcriptional coactivation. The conservation of Mediator-dependent transcriptional coactivation by DELLA between Arabidopsis and Marchantia implies that this mechanism is intrinsic to the emergence of DELLA in the last common ancestor of land plants.Peer reviewe

It is an interactive game that allows players to learn Qur'anic scripture in a user-friendly way. The player interacts through the user interface by virtually rolling three dice, and they receive an output based on their consultation. In the documentThe European Qur'an. Islamic Scripture in European Cultures and Religion 1150-1850 (EuQu) is a research project (2019-2025) that aims to explore the ways in which the Islamic Holy Book is embedded in the intellectual, religious, and cultural history of Medieval and Early Modern Europe.
