Ensemble atmospheric dispersion modelling of volcanic species: interpreting ensemble data and applications
Customarily, operational forecast systems rely on volcanic ash transport and dispersal (VATD) models to produce deterministic forecasts. VATD models are powerful tools to generate realistic representations of the spatio-temporal distribution of airborne volcanic species (i.e. ash and gases) and tephra deposits using a physics-based approach. However, these models include multiple physical parameterisations which are highly sensitive to errors in model input parameters (e.g. eruption source parameters) and also depend on uncertain external data (e.g. meteorological fields from numerical weather prediction models). The use of ensemble modelling strategies makes it possible to take into account uncertainties in model inputs, physical parameterisations and meteorological data, and has become increasingly more popular over the past decade. This study explores different approaches for dealing with ensemble data using statistical techniques, reduction of data complexity, and clustering analysis. The advantages and disadvantages of potential products generated by an operational volcanic ash dispersion forecast system are discussed in detail. Finally, we show examples of some possible applications of the use of ensemble atmospheric dispersion modelling, including ensemble-based data assimilation techniques, volcanic deposit reconstruction, and source term inversion methods (DT-GEO: A Digital Twin for GEOphysical extremes, project under grant agreement No. 101058129; ChEESE-2P: Centre of Excellence for Exascale in Solid Earth, project under grant agreement No. 101093038)
University scientific coproduction becomes more social in economic crisis
Publisher's version available at: http://hdl.handle.net/10261/402672Universities coproduce scientific knowledge with a variety of stakeholders, including both industry and
hospitals. This study investigates whether the relative share of university coproduction with one or the other
varies according to economic growth and the global burden of disease. In doing so, we also fill a gap in
Innovation Studies by providing a focused literature review on why hospitals publish and how university hospital copublications can be considered a way for universities to orient their research toward more
socially impactful goals. Our analysis, centred on cancer research from 2004–2023, examines nearly
500,000 university copublications and reveals a clear pattern: economic growth favours copublication with
industry over hospitals, while a higher global burden of cancer shifts the preference towards hospital
collaborations. However, during periods of strong economic growth, universities tend to prioritise industry
collaborations, even in the context of significant disease burdens. Given that hospital copublications are
more directly aligned with social and public health objectives, we recommend policies to maintain a balance
in university coproduction with hospitals during periods of economic expansion, ensuring a sustained focus
on socially impactful research that addresses pressing public health challenges.Projects AICO/2021/021 of the Valencian Government and PID2022-141605NA-I00 of the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities funded this research. Evaluation of Topsoil Carbon Content and Quality in a Peatland and Reforested Soil after 50 Years of Soil Restoration in the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park (Spain)
The increase in atmospheric CO2 levels and the advance of desertification due to soil degradation across our planet is becoming one of humanity’s most serious concerns. The restoration and development of soil management techniques are becoming widespread tools to protect soils. The Sierra de Guadarrama National Park (Spain) is an area that has suffered historically severe deforestation, but it was reforested in an extensive program 50 years ago. For this purpose, the chemical composition of the different soil organic matter fractions was characterized using infrared and UV-vis spectroscopies. The results showed a large increase in carbon stocks in the topsoil (0–10 cm) (about 30 Mgha 1 more than the area not reforested) after reforestation 50 years ago. There was also an increased level of transformation of organic carbon into resilient humic structures, which are resistant to degradation. Reforestation activities within the National Park have greatly increased the humification rates of organic matter, resulting in the accumulation of high-quality organic carbon.Peer reviewe
Monocitos, macrófagos y células dendríticas en homeostasis y patología
14 p.-5 fig.
Tyre recycling represents a global challenge that has been addressed from energy recovery approaches to pyrolysis, mechanical recycling and other methods. However, none of them is able to achieve maximum selectivity. The main motivation of the biological devulcanisation method is to develop an environmentally friendly process and thus eliminate the chemical agent in the existing devulcanisation process. Biological devulcanisation of used tyre rubber has been reported using sulphur-consuming microorganisms belonging to the bacterial genera thiobacillus, sulfolobus and rhodococcus. These bacteria attack selectively the sulphur-sulphur bonds, without affecting the hydrocarbon chains of the rubber so that the rubber could be revulcanised with fresh sulphur. The most commonly used microorganisms for desulphurisation of tyre rubber are T. ferrooxidans, T. thiooxidans, T. thioparus and Sulfolobus. Microbial desulphurisation is the most widely used biological method for rubber recyclin
Combination of exhaled volatile organic compounds with serum biomarkers predicts respiratory infection severity
3 figures, 1 table.-- Under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial License.[Objective] During respiratory infections, host-pathogen interaction alters metabolism, leading to changes in the composition of expired volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and soluble immunomodulators. This study aims to identify VOC and blood biomarker signatures to develop machine learning-based prognostic models capable of distinguishing infections with similar symptoms.[Methods] Twenty-one VOCs and fifteen serum biomarkers were quantified in samples from 86 COVID-19 patients, 75 patients with non-COVID-19 respiratory infections, and 72 healthy donors. The populations were categorized into severity subgroups based on their oxygen support requirements. Descriptive and statistical analyses were conducted to assess group differentiation. Additionally, machine learning classifiers were developed to predict disease severity in both COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 patients.[Results] VOC and biomarker profiles differed significantly among groups. Random Forest models demonstrated the best performance for severity prediction. The COVID-19 model achieved 93% accuracy, 100% sensitivity, and 89% specificity, identifying IL-6, IL-8, thrombomodulin, and toluene as key severity predictors. In non-COVID-19 patients, the model reached 89% accuracy, 100% sensitivity, and 67% specificity, with CXCL10 and methyl-isobutyl-ketone as key markers.[Conclusion] VOCs and serum biomarkers differentiated HD, COVID-19, and non-COVID-19 patients, and enabled the development of high-performance severity prediction models. While promising, these findings require validation in larger independent cohorts. This research was supported by PTI Salud Global CSIC,Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación and Unión Europea – NextGenerationEU; CIBER- Consorcio Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red- CIBERINFEC[CB21-13-0087] and CIBERES, Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Ministerio deCiencia e Innovación and Unión Europea – NextGenerationEU, FEDER (FondoEuropeo de Desarrollo Regional, Gobierno de Aragón (Group B29_23R andLMP139_21).
