    Children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) experience unique opportunities and risks in digital spaces. While technology can enhance communication, learning, and social interaction, SEND children also face heightened online risks, including cyberbullying, grooming, and exposure to harmful content. Existing safeguarding strategies often fail to address their specific needs, focusing on risk avoidance rather than empowerment. This chapter introduces the importance of a multi-stakeholder approach, drawing on ecological systems theory to examine how parents, educators, and policymakers influence online safety. It argues for more inclusive, tailored safeguarding strategies that balance protection with digital inclusion, ensuring SEND children can navigate online spaces safely while benefiting from the opportunities technology offers

    ImmersiveDepth: A Hybrid Approach for Monocular Depth Estimation from 360 Images Using Tangent Projection and Multi-Model Integration

    ImmersiveDepth is a hybrid framework designed to tackle challenges in Monocular Depth Estimation (MDE) from 360-degree images, specifically spherical distortions, occlusions, and texture inconsistencies. By integrating tangent image projection, a combination of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and transformer models, and a novel multi-scale alignment process, ImmersiveDepth achieves seamless and precise depth predictions. Evaluations on diverse datasets show an average 37% reduction in RMSE compared to Depth Anything V2 and a 25% accuracy boost in low-light conditions over MiDaS v3.1. ImmersiveDepth thus establishes a robust solution for immersive technologies, autonomous systems, and 3D reconstruction

    Intersectional inequalities in trust in the police in England

    This study investigates intersectional inequalities in trust in the police in England using multilevel analysis of individual heterogeneity and discriminatory accuracy (MAIHDA) for the first time. We find that those who are non-White, from lower social classes, and reside in London show lower predicted trust levels than other people. While older people show higher predicted trust levels, younger people, especially those from marginalised backgrounds, have the lowest predicted levels of trust in the police. We also find intersectional effects. While middle-aged White males from lower social classes and living outside of London have lower than-expected trust in the police, older White females from lower social classes and living outside of London have higher than-expected trust in the police. We argue that ground-level, community engagement, coupled with extensive officer training on engaging with individuals from diverse backgrounds, are key to developing higher levels of trust in the police

    This research contributes to a deeper comprehension of the fusion of real and virtual in virtual production (VP) and extended reality (XR), emphasizing their role as one of the ways to preserve the continuity of dramatic space in film and TV production. It explores the blending of real and virtual elements on the virtual production set, focusing on cinematic concepts such as mise-en-scene, plan sequence, and in-camera effects like rear projection. The research aims to bridge the gap between technology, philosophy, and film studies by providing multidisciplinary analysis and enhancing our understanding of contemporary media production practices. Key inquiries include the influences on perspectives and definitions of reality, the distortion and merging of reality in hyperreality, and the use of simulacra to challenge the authenticity of the medium. By departing from traditional theoretical frameworks such as Plato's worldview and Cartesian dichotomy, the research provides nuanced insights into the "realism of the movie set,"where simulacra represent truth. Drawing on Baudrillard's taxonomy of representation, it demonstrates how modern virtual production techniques, as seen in Jon Favreau's work on The Mandalorian (2021), empower creative autonomy, and replicate real-world processes

    Understanding the variation of modern endoscopic ultrasound use in patients with oesophageal cancer (VALUE): protocol for a multi-methods study.

    OBJECTIVES: Over 9000 patients are diagnosed with oesophageal cancer annually in the United Kingdom (UK). Decision-making about treatment options is influenced by radiological staging, which may include computed tomography (CT), positron emission tomography (PET), and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). The use of EUS varies considerably around the UK and, since the introduction of PET-CT, the added value of EUS has been questioned. The VALUE study aims to understand this variation and determine how often and why EUS changes treatment decisions. VALUE will also evaluate patient and clinician experiences and opinions of EUS. METHODS: This is a prospective, observational study investigating EUS in oesophageal cancer staging. Patients will be recruited at up to eleven sites in the UK, where they will be consented (if eligible) and registered onto iMedidata RAVE. Clinical and demographic data, TNM staging, pre and post EUS treatment decisions, and complications will be collected. We will attempt to sample patients from ethnic minority backgrounds in the study population, as they are underrepresented in research. Up to 30 patients and 30 clinicians will be interviewed to evaluate the use of EUS and experiences of both patient and clinician. The primary endpoint is the proportion of cases that EUS changes treatment decisions. Secondary endpoints include identification of factors that clinicians' and patients consider when deciding if EUS should be used, the time from diagnosis to treatment decision before and after EUS, and the reasons why EUS changed management. The study has been registered on Clinicaltrials.gov: NCT06440174. The trial is open to recruitment. RESULTS: In total, 180 patients with potentially curable oesophageal cancer who are suitable for EUS will participate. Recruitment is currently planned until September 2025 and study results will be reported after June 2026. CONCLUSION: The VALUE study will enable a better understanding of how and why EUS is used in oesophageal cancer. This research will identify important factors that clinicians and patients consider when deciding EUS use and determine the frequency that EUS changes treatment decisions in the modern staging pathway. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE: The VALUE study is a prospective, multi-centre observational study investigating the use of EUS in the modern era of oesophageal cancer staging.     Designing a Flexible and Inclusive Approach for Public and Community Involvement in Research With People Who Are Homeless or Vulnerably Housed: Critical Reflections From the I Am More Than… Project

    Background: People who are homeless or vulnerably housed face significant health inequities and yet are rarely involved in health and social care research as participants, public contributors or co-researchers. The I Am More Than… project was developed to address this lack of inclusion by working in partnership with community organisations and individuals with lived experiences of being homeless or vulnerably housed. Objective: To co-design a flexible and inclusive approach for public and community involvement in research (sometimes referred to as public and patient involvement or PPI). Methods: The project drew on a range of co-production and participatory research strategies, with input from various stakeholders, to identify and address enablers and barriers to participation. Community researchers with lived experience of homelessness or being vulnerably housed were central to all stages of the project, including the co-design of strategies to engage people through conversations, interviews, creative outputs and stakeholder events. Findings: We identified core principles for inclusive public and community involvement in research. including the need to: develop relationships first and tasks second; gain a deep understanding of communities and their priorities; harness lived experience expertise; however someone may choose to share it; go at the pace of trust; and work in partnership with voluntary and community sector organisations who are embedded in their communities. Conclusion: Developing a flexible and inclusive approach to public and community involvement in research required shifting from a transactional approach to a relational approach. The project demonstrated the importance of building trust, working in partnership and being flexible and responsive to people's everyday realities for genuine inclusion to be achieved. Patient or Public Contribution: This is a co-produced project between a university, an integrated care system, two community organisations and people experiencing homelessness or being vulnerably housed. Individuals with lived experience participated as community researchers, shaping the design, methods and outcomes. Their contributions are detailed throughout the paper, which is co-authored by members of the project team, including staff from two community organisations and one community researcher

    Macroalgal mat species diversity, composition, and seasonality at four coastal sites across the English Channel/La Manche region

    Seaweed mats are a consequence of eutrophication in coastal waters and can have negative ecological impacts. Consequently, many European environmental assessment frameworks (e.g. the Water Framework Directive, Marine Strategy Framework Directive) monitor seaweed mat biomass. Ulva, commonly referred to as sea lettuce, is often assumed to be the dominant taxon, but mats can contain multiple Ulva species, and other taxa, and within-mat diversity is often poorly known. Understanding the composition of seaweed mats has implications for nutrient removal from coastal waters because seaweeds uptake and store nutrients differently between species, time of year and location. The use of traditional molecular methods to identify seaweed species cannot easily be applied to mats. In contrast, with the development of Next Generation Sequencing and Cleaved Amplified Polymorphic Sequences assay, a bulk sampling approach for monitoring the seaweed species within mats can be applied. Here, we applied this bulk sampling approach to monitor seaweed species at four sites: three estuarine sites containing mudflats and one exposed sandy site across the English Channel/La Manche region that historically and currently have occurrences of seaweed mats. We assessed variability between sites with respect to biomass, entrainment, species composition and seasonality. The highest mat abundance was found at Holes Bay, Poole, UK and entrainment or burial of seaweed within the sediment was found at two sites, Holes Bay and the Ledano Estuary, France, correlating with similar sediment types and high seaweed biomass. Foliose Ulva lacinulata dominated at Holes Bay, while Langstone Harbour, Portsmouth, UK had many tubular and filamentous green species and one brown filamentous species. At the two French sites we identified foliose Ulva species. This study demonstrates the high seaweed species diversity and biomass that can be found within macroalgal mats, information that will be important in the refinement and development of model-based nutrient removal estimates as part of nutrient mitigation and management strategies
