Görsel Duyu Dışında Kalan Duyusal Unsurların Mobilya Perakendesi Özelinde Müşteri Memnuniyeti Üzerindeki Etkileri : Duyusal Unsurların Müşteri Memnuniyeti Üzerindeki Etkileri
Recognizing that atmospheric features affect consumer behavior in the retail industry, companies try to design and shape interiors to influence consumers, and thereby gain a competitive advantage through integrating store design into their marketing strategies. Although visual elements are always the most dominant in store interiors, using other non-visual elements (such as fragrances, music, and texture) together with visual elements can strongly affect the customers’ moods and behaviors. Each of the factors that affect interior planning and design is a stimulant that sends a message to customers and determines the formation of in-store experiences. Companies can use one or more stimulants together to create these experiences, as well as create store environments that appeal to all senses. Given that customers are generally affected by environmental factors, store atmosphere and the interior elements can influence their choice of store, encourage unplanned purchases, increase their spending, influence their product choices, and lengthen the time they spend in the store. Thus, companies can use store atmosphere to ensure that customers enjoy their shopping experience and leave the store satisfied. Accordingly, this study aims to determine how multiple stimuli (except for the visual ones) in store interiors determine in-store pleasantness and customer behavior through a case study of the furniture industry. By investigating these retail environments, it aims to contribute to the retailing and interior design literature. The study is aimed on the argument that store environments should be evaluated in terms of every sensory element that comprise them while store environments should be purposively designed to affect customers psychologically and physically. Guided by the relevant literature, the study identified the key auditory, tactile, olfactory, and gustatory design components for the studied retail sector in Turkey. Regarding the importance of home furniture in interiors and its place in the retail market, Doğtaş was selected as the Turkish furniture company to be studied. In 2014, Doğtaş realized that the design criteria it applied in its stores were problematic. It therefore evaluated this concept and conducted improvement studies on the problems before renovating its stores. The present study used Doğtaş’ store concept change as an opportunity to identify specific interior design elements and their effects on customers. The prediction was that customers who were satisfied with the shopping experience offered by the store environment would make more positive purchasing decisions. Following a comprehensive literature review of research in marketing, customer behavior, customer satisfaction, retail design, and store atmosphere, the field work was conducted using mixed methods. More specifically, observations, photography, surveys, and face-to-face interviews were applied in seven selected Doğtaş stores. Necessary documents (store plans, institutional architectural guide, statistical data) were obtained from the company’s archive. The face-to-face interview data was analyzed qualitatively while the survey data was subject to statistical analyses and summarized in detailed tables and comments. The questionnaire contained ten questions to determine the relationship between the interior design elements of smell, hearing, touch/feeling, and taste, and customer satisfaction and shopping behaviors. The effects of each element on spatial satisfaction were examined in terms of the concept change introduced by Doğtaş. The survey, observation, and interview results indicated that Doğtaş’ new store concept made the in-store environment more pleasant, improved the mood of both customers and sales staff, provided a more enjoyable shopping experience, and positively affected customer shopping behaviors. The interviewed customers also indicated that they would consider revisiting the stores and recommend them to others. The new store concept also improved the sales staff’s mood. Customers came closer to the products and spent more time than they realized in the store. The interviews showed that the new interior design components increased the number of unplanned purchases, which in turn had a positive effect on the customers’ shopping experiences. Overall, this study demonstrated that the customers of this furniture store company noticed and approved of multi-sensory changes to the store interiors that contribute to store atmosphere. These findings can provide guidance regarding which interior design components furniture stores should consider. The analysis revealed that it is important to use multi-sensory design components (auditory, haptic, olfactory and gustatory) to create appealing store atmospheres that make them more pleasant for customers.Bu çalışmanın amacı, mobilya sektöründe bir vaka çalışması ile çoklu uyarıcıları (görme duyusu hariç) barındıran mağaza iç mekânlarının müşteri memnuniyeti ve müşteri alışveriş davranışları üzerindeki etkilerini belirlemektir. Politics of the Ancient House: Classical Greek Houses of West Anatolia: Politics of the Ancient House: Classical Greek Houses of West Anatolia
The domestic architecture and urban planning in the Classical Era are discussed in relation to the notions of democracy and equality in most studies. In these researches, usually both sides of the Aegean are considered without any distinction despite the fact that the political and social structure and thus the organization of domestic layout differed in Anatolia and Greece. Just as it is not possible to identify a single, homogenous Greek culture until the Hellenistic Era, it is also not sensible to claim that there was a consistent democratic governance in West Anatolia which remained under the Persian rule between 546-334.2 The Greek houses of West Anatolia are discussed in terms of how the political ideas of democracy and equality might have been influential in their architectural layout within this background. The grid plan, equal house plots (Insulae,) and identical type-houses are considered as aspects of the principle of equality while the oikos is considered as a space pursuing the spatial tradition of the Mycenaean palaces and the andron as a sign of shared political power among citizens.
Public spaces are defined as places for recreation and sociability, and considered according to spatial characteristics in both urban planning and urban design literatures. Public spaces are accepted as the essence of cities referring such qualities as plurality, diversity and coexistence. Private sector started to provide public sector services in last decades which in turn affected both public spaces and society. Consequently, there is a growing concern about loss of publicness of public spaces and some criteria have been developed to understand the degree of publicness of spaces open to public. These criteria mainly depend on physical attributes of spaces. Studies in social sciences, consider the publicness in cities according to activity dimension based on free speech, related to public sphere. The concept of public sphere is a sphere of discussion where all citizens could express their ideas to a wider public. Hence, public sphere does not necessarily need actual spaces, all real and virtual (media, newspapers, Internet) mediums provide a base to constitute public sphere. Social sciences, consider public spaces as all mediums of free speech and representation. The approach of social sciences to publicness of cities generates new opportunities to consider public spaces beyond their spatial characteristics for both urban planning and urban design disciplines.
Rapidly developing social and technological changes are increasing the need for education. School gardens, defined as “the outer periphery of schools,” are important places that contribute to the healthy development of children’s physical, mental and social relationships. However, the availability of these spaces depends on the quantity and quality of these areas that should fulfill students’ needs. In this study, the planning and design criteria of school gardens were analyzed in terms of national, international and scientific standards, field and spatial uses and the adequacy of the equipment were evaluated, planning-design standards were given and recommendations were developed.Hızla gelişen sosyal ve teknolojik değişimler, kurumsal eğitime olan gereksinimi artırmaktadır.
This study was carried out to create a supportive model for the development of original projects by using biodesign in interior architecture undergraduate education. Biodesign is an applied science that is used as an effective method of solving design problems with the help of biology. Inspired by nature and living things has always been a continuing phenomenon for a design process to develop and create a design. As in many design disciplines, in interior architecture and interior design projects, it is a common observation to see design projects inspired by biology. It has been observed that similar methods, inspired by biology, are used by interior architecture undergraduate students in their projects. However, the effect of biology-inspired methods and methods on designs during the project development process is discussed in terms of the originality the project. The inspiration method generally is defined as imitating either the function or the form of nature. This method by itself is not enough to describe the bio-inspiration. Biodesign is an applied science used as an effective method in solving design problems with the help of biology.
In addition to this, to create original and unique design projects, the effects of bio-inspired methodologies and the use of bio[1]inspiration in the design process needs to be discussed. The effects and the methods of usage of biology and technology in the design process became an important subject. Hence the importance of developing research and designing with multiple disciplines for interior architecture is increasing. For this reason, the integration of the design process of interior architecture with biological analysis and observations with support of developing technologies to improve “biodesign” methods.
For this research, the methods of biodesign in interior architecture were explored and searched to develop a proper method that could be used especially in interior architecture undergraduate education. Biodesign is a proper methodology in order to create unique designs. To develop a method, the study constitutes experimental research to develop a supportive model in the development of original projects by using biodesign methodology in interior architecture undergraduate education. To prove the hypothesis, it was preferred to use cross-sectional and orientation/observation research methods, which are among the quantitative research methods.
To form a basis for the development of a potential education model in interior architecture undergraduate education, a program was applied for the studio project course for undergraduate interior architecture, and an experimental study was conducted with the sample group within the scope of this program. For the research, a mixed group of interior architecture students from the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design at Özyeğin University was composed. For the analysis of the study, the differences such as gender, age, family education status, religion, language, race, nationality, and financial opportunities of the students were excluded.
With this experimental study, it is desired to develop a method that will support the development of unique projects in interior architecture undergraduate education. The data obtained from the study were analyzed and evaluated in terms of the feasibility of biodesign as an appropriate method to be used in interior architecture undergraduate education. In addition, this study aimed to create a source for various research on biodesign usage areas and methodologies in interior architecture, and the contribution to the application model of biodesign proposed within the scope of the study to the development of unique projects in interior architecture undergraduate education has been evaluated.
The introduction part states the importance, the purpose, the scope, and the methodology of the research with the supportive data obtained from the literature research carried out within the scope of the subject.
In the second part, the definition of biodesign is included through the literature research with the analysis of the practiced areas in the 21st century and the methods of use in interior architecture determined.
In the third part of the report, the suggested biodesign method for undergraduate interior architecture design education is explained. The experimental study process with the sample group of the program was planned according to this program proposal explained. The analysis of the data obtained from the experimental study was reported, and the experimental study was evaluated in terms of a suitable program for interior architecture undergraduate education.
In the conclusion part of the research, the data analysis, and the evaluation of the suggested biodesign program for interior architecture undergraduate education have adhered. Further, to guide the studies within the scope of the subject, more suggestions are stated to develop for future studies.
This research paper juxtaposes the architectural and spatial meanings of the concept of “boundary” with design studio research. Starting from the dialectical structure of the concept of boundary, the article examines the boundaries, which are seen as an element that supports creative action in the design studio. In the article, it is suggested to rethink the concepts of “space” and “ boundary”, basing the theoretical approach on the hypothesis that “reality is established through interaction”.
The concept of boundary refers to dynamic cross-sections that create relations and interaction in terms of both separating the whole into two different areas and carrying the meaning of the place where the two sides meet each other. The concept of boundary is often a restrictive element in everyday language; while it is perceived as a kind of obstacle, on the other hand, coexistence takes place; It can be seen as a “meeting point”. This semantic duality enables boundaries to be conceptualized as both an architectural (physical) and spatial (experiential) element.
After considering the concept of boundary as a founding concept, this research turns to the wide range of “space” concepts in the literature. Within the scope of the research, the literature review deals with the concept of “living space” in the context of phenomenological space understandings and mainly approaches to the perception of spatial reality. The question of perception of space is examined by considering Lettvin’s “frog” metaphor and Lefebvre’s conception of space together. This examination forms the intellectual basis of the field study. The research question of this study is why students use a space with blurred and undefined boundaries as a design studio instead of the designed studio with a defined space with boundaries. The research is based on the hypothesis that “the reality builds the studio”, based on the lack of clear boundaries of the alternative studio space that students choose voluntarily.
With the thought that the concepts of “space” and “ boundary” will only gain meaning in line with the spatial reality perception of the users, the research focuses on an alternative studio space preferred by the users. The study explores this proposition by relating it to the tendency of Faculty of Architecture students to use an undefined space as a studio environment. In this context, a total of 3 research stages, the first two of which are preliminary research, have been designed: (I) Determining the places where the research will be carried out by planning reading (II) Determining the studio and non-studio use of the students with the observation method (III) Semi-structured interviews with the students and analyzing the findings.
Two venues were chosen for the research: While the “Designed Studio Space” is a place for formal education, defined for the students of the Faculty of Architecture, with definite boundaries; Undefined “Alternative Studio Space” is a borderless, undefined common use area located between the busiest circulation axes of the campus. This space is, in a sense, a design studio established by the students themselves; It is a field where informal education takes place. For this reason, this place has been given the definition of “Studio Under Stairs” due to its physical and semantic features. It has been observed that the students of the Faculty of Architecture spend most of their time on campus, including their studio hours, in this place.
When the findings of the structured interviews designed at the end of the research on the Alternative Studio are evaluated, it is seen that the answers related to the perceived and living space are more prominent. This is proof that the alternative studio space is in a structure that allows interaction. The findings of this study show that creating an interactive space defines a liberating studio. These findings regarding the physical and experiential description of the studio also give clues about the alternative space production of architectural design education. In that case, the studio space tends to create free environments for itself when the physical elements are perceived, synthesized with the past information in daily life and re-interpreted depending on the user’s sense.Sınırlar; sosyo-kültürel yapıların biçimlendirdiği çevre içinde varlığını devam ettiren, bireyleri ayıran veya onları bir arada tutmak ve ilişkilerini düzenlemek için çerçeveleyen; kimi zaman gözle görülür şekillenmeler gösterebilirken, kimi zaman tamamen soyut şekillerde ifadesini bulabilen ögelerdir.
While history dicipline incline towards micro history and alternative literature from dominant nation history narratives, some approaches to understand significance in terms of life experience of place where social events occur, and to conserve “soul of the place” discuss. This attitude brings closer conservation scope to community step by step, and initiate the studies for spatial belongings related to urban memory. In spite of this, it is possible that conservation dicipline, still and mostly, express to have a technical content. In this context, the study aims to discuss significance of the concept of memory and soul of the place remaining background in comparison to technical conservation process in terms of conservation approaches, even though it is in the limelight in recent years. Despite some principals mentioned above improve internationally, it is seemed that the authors mainly focus some researches towards physical place knowledge and partly eliminate analysis of which contact coherence and memory over intangible values. In this context of this problem, the study clarifies the relationship between memory, and space and city, after that, the role of memory in “community design” and the significance of the concepts; the soul of place and belongings in terms of conservation studies. After this explanation, it is discussed the need for new methods and approaches supplied social sciences dicipline for conservation of spatial memory exposed to danger of distruction through neoliberal policies in recent years. Finally, it is stated the importance of caring conservation sense minded the style of relationship between human and space, and of abandoning hasty and rent-focussed approaches.
This study discusses whether the conservation action, which mostly focuses on physical space and capital-oriented transformations, causes amnesia in our country. In this context, the study aims to discuss, through some examples, that the problem of memory loss, which occurs as a result of physical interventions under the name of protection within the scope of Law No. 5366, occurs as a result of neglect of protection principals.
Against such a problem, it was emphasized that the concepts of social memory and the spirit of the place should be handled in line with the international protection principles, which express their absolute importance in the conservation dicipline, and that the physical interventions to be made should be applied by considering these principals. In this direction, the importance of oral history studies emerges in order to understand the spirit and memory of the place. An effective oral history study is possible with mapping and participatory methods. In order to carry out such qualitative analyzes, first of all, a detailed documentation process on scale from micro to macro, from object to landscape will be needed. This documantation process is carried out with the data recording system with the support of technology and a national cultural inventory is created.
As a result, architectural values and memory elements are gradually being destroyed within the existing hegemony in cities.Memory destruction is seen as a product of capitalist accumulation processes and it is necessary to take measures for this. Therefore, a human-space interactive conservation approach should gain importance. Otherwise, the danger of the emergence of a generation that has forgotten its past is essential. In order to overcome this situation, it is necessary to be competent in defining and protecting spatial memory elements in terms of institutional-conceptual infrastructure, legilation and practices of not only the conservation practices, but also the entire spatial planning practice. The fact that we have a practice that is far from this competence today is a fact that needs to be considered.
In our current practice, inquiries about the relationship between spatial plans, especially urban renewal and transformation processes, and urban memory remain in the background. Interventions made from the top down and only within the framework of economic expectations both in the field of planning and protection render cities without memory and therefore without identity. Within the framework of cartesian perception and the rationales of capitalism, space is detached from all temporal, sensory and emotional bonds, gradually becoming commodified as a direct object and easily turns into a comsumption tool. Spatial planning and conservation practice should be responsible for the public interest in producing approaches and representations that will enable the Cartesian paradigm to re-percieve time and space, which they seperated from each other.
Building Material Selection for Resource-Efficiency in the Design Process and Architects’ Approach: Kaynak Etkin Yapı Malzemesi Seçimi
Resource efficiency has become a critical issue because of the increased environmental effects and the rapid depletion of natural resources caused by fast build and population growth since the Industrial Revolution. Resource efficiency is defined as the production, processing, and consumption of natural resources sustainably by reducing their negative environmental impacts throughout their life cycle. While minimizing waste generation, resource efficiency also contributes to the circular economy, which aims to preserve their value for as long as possible by returning resources to the material cycle at the end of their use. That the construction sector has a large share in raw material, energy, and water consumption and the generation of waste has increased the environmental impact of buildings throughout their life cycle. Considering that most of the resource consumption of buildings caused by building materials, the selection and use of building materials play a significant role in terms of resource efficiency. In this context, the architectural design phase is effective in reducing environmental impacts. The study aims to evaluate architects’ approaches and awareness, design criteria, barriers, and limitations on the resourceefficiency of building materials in the architectural design process. Within the scope of the study, first, the literature on the resource-efficiency of building materials was analyzed, and twenty-one criteria were developed for building material selection criteria. In line with the literature research, the nine barriers affecting the designer’s selection of resource-efficient building materials were determined as the lack of knowledge of the designer on the relevant subject, cost, lack of customer demand, lack of environmental data and database, availability of the material in the market, lack of awareness, lack of regulations, lack of financial incentives, lack of supervision on resource conservation. A field study was conducted by creating a questionnairecontaining the criteria and barriers through face-to-face interviews or online via “Google Forms” between January and April 2022 for 144 architects in Kocaeli. The questionnaire was prepared based on a 5-point Likert scale for the evaluation of the use frequency and barriers of resource-efficient building material selection criteria. The questionnaires were analyzed using the correlation method, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and t-test with the SPSS program, and the relevance of all parameters was evaluated statistically. The architects who participated in the survey select building materials in their designs, think that material selection is important in resource efficiency, and prefer building materials with long service life, the least unpackaged, less, or ecologically packed building materials. According to the results of the survey and analysis, the gender and professional experience of the architects do not affect the resource-efficient building materials selection and the use frequency during the design phase. However, the education degree affects the material selection. Architects with a doctorate more often prefer building materials produced using renewable natural energy sources and unpackaged, less or ecologically packaged building materials when designing. There is no significant difference in the answers of architects about the barriers affecting their choice of materials according to gender, education level or professional experience. The most affected by the limitations determined by the resource-efficiency strategy of the material is building materials produced using renewable natural energy resources. The designer’s lack of knowledge barrier and availability barrier in themarket are most effective in the building materials selection with low embodied energy. Cost barriers and lack of customer demand are most effective in the building materials selection with good insulation properties. The barrier to environmental data, lack of database and awareness are most effective in the building materials selection produced using renewable naturalenergy sources. The lack of regulations is the most effective in the reusable building materials selection, and the lack of financial incentives is most effective in the selection of building materials that are easy to maintain and repair. The lack of control on resource conservation is most effective in the recyclable building materials and certified wooden building materialsselection. It is thought that the study can guide the resource-efficient building materials selection as a result of the determination of the measures taken by the architects for resource-efficiency and the evaluation of the barriers. For further studies; it is suggested that this field study should be carried out for the users and other stakeholders in the building industry
Top Döküm Binaları (Tophane-i Amire) ve Onarımları: Top Döküm Binaları (Tophane-i Amire) ve Onarımları
Guns had proved to be very effective in the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottoman Turks in 1453 AD. This is the reason why Sultan Mehmed the Second, also named briefly “Fatih” (The Conqueror) had built these gunfoundries directly after the conquest of the city, out of the Genoese city walls in front of the Galata Gate. The first foundry had to be extended at the end of the XV. Century during the reign of Sultan Bayezid the Second. Only 20 years after this extension, in the time of Sultan Süleyman the First, known as “Süleyman the Magnificient”, the foundries could not meet the requirements of the Empire any longer. Only two foundry buildings remained from the whole complex to our days. The large building with a row of five domes and two aisles covered with barrel-vaults is dated back to the XVIII. Century. The domes rest on arches and pendentives supported by eight columns. The smaller building having a square plan had been built by the “Conqueror”, in the middle of the XV. Century. It has a single dome as a roof, again with a lantern at its apex. The restoration of the existing buildings took place in 1958-1959 and in the years from 1973 to 1984. The buildings were used as “Gun Museum” until they were left to Mimar Sinan University in 1992. The rearrangement of the interior was carried out by the specialists of the University. Since 1998 the buildings are in use as “Cultural And Exhibition Center of Mimar Sinan University”.Bizans döneminde "Metopan" olarak adlandırılan, Osmanlılar döneminde ise Tophane adını alan semtte top döküm tesisleri inşasının Fatih Sultan Mehmed tarafından başlatıldığı bilinmektedir.ll. Yüzyıl’a tarihlenebilir.
