    Analysis of politeness strategies in English communication among EFL students at UIN Walisongo

    This study investigates the use of politeness strategies in English communication among EFL students at UIN Walisongo, focusing on differences across proficiency levels and their relation to communicative and pragmatic competence. Data were collected through Discourse Completion Tasks (DCT) and interviews. The analysis categorizes students’ responses based on Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory, classifying utterances into Bald on Record, Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness, and Off-Record strategies. Findings indicate that Bald on Record is the most frequently used strategy across all proficiency levels, with Semester 3 students using it the most, while Semester 7 students employ more Positive and Negative Politeness. The study also reveals that students' L1 influences their politeness strategies in English, and their sociopragmatic knowledge affects their ability to use indirect and culturally appropriate politeness strategies. These results highlight the importance of integrating politeness awareness into EFL instruction to enhance students’ communicative competence in cross-cultural interactions.     Non-verbal directive speech acts in the CODA movie : a content analysis approach

    This study explores the use of non-verbal directive speech acts in the CODA movie and their implications for inclusive learning in regular classrooms, particularly those expressed through American Sign Language (ASL). Motivated by the challenges faced by deaf students in mainstream education, the research aims to provide foundational knowledge for inclusive teaching strategies. Employing a content analysis method, the study categorizes directive speech acts using John Searle’s (1975) classification framework. The findings reveal 48 instances of directive speech acts, including commands (40%), requests (10%), suggestions (23%), advice (2%), instructions (4%), warnings (4%), permissions (2%), and prohibitions (15%). The research concludes that non-verbal directives in CODA movie offer valuable insights into effective communication for inclusive education. It recommends integrating sign language instruction, multimodal teaching, and inclusive school culture to make regular classrooms more accessible and equitable, especially for students with hearing impairments.     Efektivitas penggunaan media kartu huruf dan kuis interaktif terhadap membaca permulaan siswa kelas I SD Negeri 1 Candisari Demak

    Penelitian ini membahas tentang efektivitas media kartu huruf dan kuis interaktif terhadap kemampuan membaca permulaan siswa kelas 1 SD Negeri 1 Candisari Demak. Tujuan yang akan dicapai pada penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui keefektifan media kartu huruf dan kuis interaktif terhadap kemampuan membaca permulaan siswa kelas I SD Negeri 1 Candisari Demak. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kuantitatif dengan desain Pree experimerimental menggunakan metode litian onegruppre grup pretestposttest- posttest design.PopulasiyangdigunakandalampenelitianiniyaituseluruhsiswakelasISDNesign. Populasi yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu seluruh siswa kelas I SD NegeriICandisaridengansampelyangberi I Candisari dengan sampel yang berjumlah 17 siswa tahun ajaran 2024/2025. Pengambilan sampel dilakukan dengan metode random sampling. Metode pengumpulan data yang dipilih ialah metode observasi, dokumentasi dan tes. Metode observasi digunakan untuk melakukan pengamatan terhadap perilaku siswa, sedangkan dokumentasi digunakan dalam mengumpulkan data siswa dan data nilai siswa sementara metode tes untuk memperoleh hasil pretest dan posttest. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa rata-rata nilai posttest kemampuan membaca permulaan siswa sebesar 86,35 naik dari nilai pretest sebesar 71,29. Pengujian dilakukan dengan uji paired sample t Test. Dari pengujian tersebut diperoleh nilai signifikansi sebesar 0,000<0,05 untuk hasil nilai pretest dan posttest kemampuan membaca permulaan siswa. Menurut hasil tersebut, dipastikan H_0 ditolak dan H_1 diterima. Berikutnya, hasil uji t menampilkan nilai korelasi sebesar 0,857 yang artinya korelasiatauhubunganantaramelasi atau hubungan antara media kartu huruf dan kuis interaktifderaktif dengan kemampuanmemampuan membaca pe$rmulaan siswa sangat kuat..     Translanguaging practices in EFL classroom : students’ perspective

    This study aims to explore students’ perspectives on translanguaging practices in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. Translanguaging the flexible use of students’ full linguistic resources is considered an inclusive and supportive pedagogical approach in multilingual learning contexts. Employing a qualitative phenomenological method, this research involved seven final-semester students from the English Education Program at UIN Walisongo Semarang. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions (FGDs), then analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that most students perceive translanguaging as a strategy that aids in comprehending complex concepts, reduces language anxiety, and enhances confidence in using English. However, some concerns were raised regarding over-reliance on the mother tongue, which might hinder the development of English proficiency. The study highlights the need for a balanced and purposeful implementation of translanguaging to maximize its educational benefits. These insights contribute to the advancement of more inclusive, student-centered approaches in language education.     Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh dan seberapa besar pengaruh model pembelajaran Think Talk Write berbantu media gambar terhadap kemampuan menulis teks deskripsi pada pembelajaran bahasa Indonesia siswa kelas V A MI Baitul Huda Semarang. Jenis penelitian ini menggunakan jenis penelitian kuantitatif eksperimen dengan desain one group pre-test post-test design. Teknik pengambilan sampel yang digunakan adalah purposive sampling dengan sampel kelas V A. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan dokumentasi dan tes. Berdasarkan data akhir diperoleh nilai rata-rata pretest 61,83 dan nilai rata-rata posttest adalah 72,5. Dengan menggunakan taraf signifikan 5%, nilai t_hitung adalah 5,527 dan t_tabel adalah 1,699. Hasil uji hipotesis menunjukkan bahwa nilai t_hitung= 5,527 > t_tabel= 1,699, sehingga hipotesis nol (H0) ditolak dan hipotesis alternatif (Ha) diterima, sehingga menunjukkan adanya pengaruh. Besar pengaruh (effect size) yang dihitung menggunakan rumus Cohen’s d diperoleh nilai sebesar 1,13 dan termasuk dalam kategori tinggi. Dengan demikian, Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan antara hasil pretest dan posttest, yang berarti model pembelajaran Think Talk Write berbantu media gambar yang diterapkan berpengaruh besar dan efektif terhadap kemampuan menulis teks deskripsi pada pembelajaran Bahasa Indonesia siswa kelas V A MI Baitul Huda Semarang

    The need analysis of English speaking for specific purposes in Islamic communication and broadcasting department

    This study aims to analyze the English language needs of students in the Islamic Communication and Broadcasting department at UIN Walisongo Semarang, with a focus on speaking skills within the context of English for Specific Purposes (ESP). Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through open and closed questionnaires distributed to students and semi-structured interviews with English lecturers. The findings show that English instruction in the department is not yet oriented toward ESP. Students recognize the importance of English-speaking skills in supporting their academic and professional careers. Students require English-speaking skills in professional contexts such as journalism, broadcasting, digital media, and multicultural communication. The main challenges include a lack of confidence, limited practical experience, and difficulty using Islamic terminology in English. Although the instruction is still based on General English, lecturers accommodate students’ needs by adapting the Outcome-Based Education (OBE) curriculum and integrating Islamic content.     Visual aids analysis : understanding picture based learning for senior high school

    The use of visual aids in English language learning is becoming an increasingly important approach to bridge students' understanding of abstract materials such as grammar and phrasal verbs. This study aims to explain the extent to which the use of visual aids can improve students' understanding, as well as describe the perceptions of teachers and students on the effectiveness of their use in the teaching and learning process. The research method and a descriptive data collection used techniques in the form of classroom observation, in-depth interviews, and open-ended questionnaires. The research subjects involved one English teacher and 30 students of class XII SMA Negeri 13 Semarang. The results showed that the use of visual aids such as pictures significantly helped students in understanding the material, increased learning focus, and encouraged active participation in class. As many as 79.33% of students stated that visual aids made learning easier to understand and more interesting. Teachers also rated visual aids as very helpful in explaining complex concepts, although they still face some technical obstacles such as limited tools and networks. This research confirms that visual media is not just a complement, but an important component in effective, contextual and interactive learning.     Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan strategi yang digunakan guru serta tantangan yang dihadapi dalam meningkatkan keterampilan membaca pemahaman pada peserta didik kelas IV MI Al Hikmah Polaman Semarang tahun ajaran 2024/2025. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif, dengan triangulasi data (observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi), ditemukan tiga strategi utama yang digunakan guru, yaitu membaca bersama, membaca berulang, dan KWL (Know Want to Know Learned). Strategi ini membantu meningkatkan pemahaman siswa, namun guru menghadapi berbagai tantangan, seperti kurangnya percaya diri, kurangnya fokus saat mendengarkan, perbedaan kemampuan membaca siswa, keterbatasan waktu, kesulitan menentukan apa yang sudah diketahui, kurangnya kemandirian dalam berpikir, manajemen waktu dalam pembelajaran. Meskipun cukup efektif, strategi ini masih perlu ditingkatkan dalam pelaksanaannya. Hasil penelitian ini diharapkan dapat menjadi rujukan dalam pengembangan strategi pembelajaran membaca pemahaman di sekolah dasar, serta menjadi bahan evaluasi bagi guru dalam meningkatkan kualitas pembelajara

    Penelitian ini membahas strategi guru kelas dalam mengatasi disgrafia melalui bimbingan belajar pada siswa kelas III di SD Al-Mardliyah Kaliwungu Selatan. Disgrafia merupakan kesulitan belajar yang memengaruhi kemampuan menulis, yang dapat menghambat proses pembelajaran siswa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan strategi bimbingan belajar yang diterapkan oleh guru dalam membantu siswa mengatasi disgrafia serta mengidentifikasi faktor pendukung dan penghambat dalam pelaksanaan strategi tersebut. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif dengan metode studi kasus. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara, observasi, dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa strategi yang digunakan meliputi penguatan motorik halus, dan menulis terstruktur. Faktor pendukung keberhasilan strategi ini mencakup dukungan guru yang memahami kebutuhan siswa dan adanya fasilitas pembelajaran.     Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis pengaruh literasi keuangan dan financial inclusion terhadap perencanaan keuangan masa pensiun dengan money personality sebagai variabel mediasi, pada generasi sandwich di Kota Semarang. Fenomena generasi sandwich yang terhimpit antara tanggung jawab merawat orang tua dan anak-anaknya mengakibatkan beban finansial ganda, yang sebagian besar disebabkan oleh kurangnya literasi keuangan dan perencanaan pensiun generasi sebelumnya. Pendekatan kuantitatif digunakan dalam penelitian ini dengan metode pengumpulan data melalui kuesioner. Jumlah sampel dalam penelitian ini sebanyak 100 responden yang diambil dengan teknik purposive sampling. Data dianalisis menggunakan teknik Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) berbasis Partial Least Square (PLS) dengan bantuan perangkat lunak SmartPLS 4.1. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa literasi keuangan, fianncial inclusion dan money personality berpengaruh positif terhadap perencanaan keuangan masa pensiun. Selain itu, money personality juga terbukti memediasi secara signifikan hubungan antara financial inclusion terhadap perencanaan keuangan masa pensiun. Temuan ini memberikan implikasi bahwa peningkatan literasi dan akses terhadap layanan keuangan, serta pemahaman terhadap karakter kepribadian uang, sangat penting dalam mendorong generasi sandwich untuk melakukan perencanaan keuangan pensiun secara efektif dan berkelanjutan.   ABSTRACT: This study aims to analyze the influence of financial literacy and financial inclusion on retirement financial planning, with money personality as a mediating variable, among the sandwich generation in Semarang City. The sandwich generation, which is burdened with the dual responsibility of caring for both their parents and children, faces significant financial pressure largely due to the lack of financial literacy and retirement planning in the previous generation. This study employs a quantitative approach using data collected through a questionnaire. The sample consists of 100 respondents selected through purposive sampling. The data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) based on the Partial Least Squares (PLS) method with the assistance of SmartPLS 4.1 software. The findings reveal that financial literacy, financial inclusion, and money personality positively influence retirement financial planning. Furthermore, money personality significantly mediates the relationship between financial inclusion and retirement planning. These findings imply that enhancing financial literacy and access to financial services, along with a deeper understanding of money personality traits, is essential for encouraging the sandwich generation to engage in effective and sustainable retirement planning
