Methane Fermentation of Lignocellulosic Biomass and its Kinetic Modelling
北九州市立大学博士(工学)This thesis examines the dual use of plant biomass for methane energy recovery and the rehabilitation of saline-degraded farmland. The first study investigated anaerobic digestion of inedible Vigna radiata biomass using lab-scale digesters with mechanically thickened digestates to extend solids retention time (SRT). COD analysis underestimated the organic load by ~10% due to lignocellulose, whereas ADM1-based modeling identified enzymatic hydrolysis as the rate-limiting step, with degradation rates of 0.051 d⁻¹ (leaves) and 0.071 d⁻¹ (stems). Predicted methane conversion was 70–74% at SRTs of 100–200 days, enabling a 6–7-fold reduction in reactor volume. The second study evaluated four halophytes grown in Uzbekistan, with Atriplex nitens showing the strongest phytoremediation potential, removing up to 1.8 kg-NaCl/kg dry soil. Evaluation of the energy-efficient designs for Dalian public buildings based on green building standards
北九州市立大学博士(工学)China’s Green Building Evaluation Standard (ESGB) supports the "dual carbon" goals, yet energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality receive relatively less emphasis. This study examines ESGB’s evolution, compares it with international standards, and analyzes seasonal energy consumption and indoor environmental quality through case studies. Additionally, 11 green public buildings are assessed using operational data to evaluate effective energy-saving design elements, incremental costs, and optimization strategies. The findings offer scientific insights and practical guidance for improving sustainability, optimizing energy efficiency, and enhancing indoor environmental quality in public buildings.doctoral thesi
Year-round hygrothermal environment, energy performance and viability assessment of a combined use plant-raising Trombe wall in humid subtropical region of Japan
北九州市立大学博士(工学)In this thesis, an alternative variant of a water Trombe wall designed to grow living plants inside its air cavity was proposed. The experiment has used a retrofitted existing Trombe wall to grow 395 basil plants using the Kratky hydroponic method during a year-long period. The available historical and experimental thermal observations, experimental measurements and weather data were analyzed to assess its performance and fitness as a solar energy-capturing device and as a cultivation space. The results have shown significant balancing (by 17.53°C yearly), cooling (by 4.08°C) and humidifying (by 7.86%) effects of plants on the Trombe wall' s air. The energy efficiency of the green Trombe wall was reduced from 26 to 18% (absorption) and from 85 to 46% (dissipation) compared to the baseline TW and provided yearly about 10000MJ of energy to the building. The cultivation was possible year-round producing yearly 20.55kg of edible greens in its interior.doctoral thesi

A Study on Modulation of Cellular Actin Cortex and Its Impact on Cell Adhesion
北九州市立大学博士(工学)My research explores the actin cortex as a dynamic regulator of cell adhesion, mechanics, and response to external stimuli. I explore how its modulation influences the diffusion of integrin CD18 and sialomucin CD34 during leukocyte adhesion, revealing that ERM protein dephosphorylation is an important event. I also investigate α-mangostin, showing that it reduces cortical stiffness and promotes adhesion through a mechanism similar to leukocyte activator. Additionally, I analyze how SARS-CoV-2 spike protein interactions, both ACE2-dependent and independent, alter cortical stiffness. These findings highlight the actin cortex's role in cellular mechanics, immune responses, and viral infection. Understanding and manipulating the actin cortex could have applications in bioengineering and disease intervention.doctoral thesi
Evaluation and perception analysis of urban street walkability
北九州市立大学博士(工学)The urban street environment plays a crucial role in shaping pedestrian experiences and influencing walking behavior. Commercial streets and coastal streets offer higher economic and ecological benefits. Assessing and enhancing walkability has become an important aspect of sustainable urban planning. This study, based on a synthesis of previous research and expert evaluations, constructs a walkability assessment framework for urban streets. It evaluates and diagnoses the current walkability issues of urban streets in Fukuoka. In addition, since vision is the primary way in which people perceive their surroundings, the study further explores the specific impact of the built environment on walking perceptions in commercial and coastal streets from a visual perspective. Finally, the study proposes planning ideas and renewal strategies to improve walkability for urban streets and characteristic streets in Fukuoka. The established evaluation framework can assist designers in planning and designing urban streets for better walkability.doctoral thesi
