Learning Phrasal Verbs: through Flashcards and Moodle tasks with Short Animations
Get PDFPhrasal verbs (PVs) are a common source of difficulty for English learners. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of using spaced repetition with flashcards and gif animations (referred to as Pvgifs) with online extracurricular activities through a university platform (Moodle) in learning PVs. First-year university students in Japan participated in this study and learned 60 PVs over one academic semester using flashcards and activities. The activities included three types of task: gap-filling, translation, and gap-filling + PVgifs. The results showed that most students made significant progress from pre-test to post-test on a productive gap-filling test, regardless of whether they completed the extracurricular tasks and PVgifs.departmental bulletin pape

Although mastering FSs poses challenges for learners due to several factors, such as their non-literal meanings, many aspects of how English learners can effectively acquire PVs and collocations remain unexplored. Thus, this thesis aimed to investigate the acquisition and retention of PVs and collocations among Japanese university students. Accelerated methanogens’ decay in the acidic environment and its mathematical modelling
Get PDF北九州市立大学博士(工学)The study focused on the effects of low pH on the decay rate of methanogenic microorganisms and their potential VFA inhibition. Results showed that low pH conditions, with a pH below 6.5, significantly enhanced the decay rate of methanogenic microorganisms, leading to irreversible inhibition. Whereas, the acidogenic bacteria were found to be more tolerant to the acidic environment. The biocidal phenomenon was mainly attributed to the proton concentration in the system and was not affected by the presence of phosphate buffer. The impacts of acidic species (C1–C5 VFAs) and the VFA concentration (until 40 mM of un-dissociated VFAs) on the biomass decay were negligibly small comparing to the low pH stress. A modified ADM1 equipped with a lag-phase sub-model could reproduce the deterioration of reactor performance during an acidic failure and resulte in a 37% improvement in the Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient compared to the calibrated ADM1 model.doctoral thesi

Get PDF北九州市立大学博士(工学)本研究では、民家に残るパッシブ設計の秘密を探るとともに、教育施設の温熱環境改善策について検討するため、民家及び教室を対象に実測調査とシミュレーションを行った。住宅においては土間の冷却効果ならびにその最適配置を明らかにした。教室に関しては、感染防止のための自然換気が空調エネルギーの著しい増大を招くこと、教室南側に土間空間を付設し外気温度基準の混合モード換気により夏季空調負荷の低減効果を明らかにした。 In this research, measurements targeting housing and educational facilities to investigate passive cooling design of the Japanese Minka, indoor thermal after air conditioning (AC) installation in classrooms and analyze AC energy use (EU) before and during COVID-19 pandemic in several schools were conducted. The simulations to find the optimal placement of the Doma and to clarify the environmental improvement effects of natural ventilation (NV), AC, and mixed-mode ventilation were also conducted. The result shows that AC EU in schools increased significantly during pandemic. The idea of Doma, which is best to be placed on south side based on the simulation result, is brought to modeling design strategy for classroom simulation, and the result shows it reduces AC cooling load in summer. It was also found that the intermittent mixed-mode ventilated room could be adapted for preventing airborne disease transmission. As for energy-saving strategy, mixed-mode ventilation based on outside air temperature can be adapted.doctoral thesi
