A semi-automatic integrated framework for non-English sentiment lexicons / Mohammed Salem Abdullah Kaity

    No full text
There has been significant growth in social media networks in the last few years. Posting opinions and messages on social networking websites has become a popular activity on the Internet. The data sources are necessary for business intelligence and market analytics, as human opinions form a major indicator of human desires and behaviour. This has resulted in the development of a new study field called sentiment analysis. This includes the analysis, evaluation and interpretation of the opinions with the help of text mining and Natural Language Processing (NLP) processes, for identifying the text polarity, as positive, neutral or negative. It is important to build sentiment analysis resources before developing the sentiment analysis models. The sentiment lexicons are seen to be a major resource which includes a list of phrases and opinion words along with their sentiment orientation. Literature review revealed that though many texts are available which are written in different languages, a majority of the sentiment analysis studies have focused on those written in English. Hence, the other non-English languages noted a shortage of lexicons and resources. Also, the techniques used for building the sentiment lexicons in non-English languages display many disadvantages like their inability to handle a particular domain, informal use of language expression and vocabulary used in the social media feeds. Furthermore, a few of the non-English sentiment lexicons also have to face translation issues and are plagued by the cultural difference when they are translated from different languages. To overcome the issues which are noted while building the non-English lexicons, a language-independent integrated framework has been proposed in this work which semi-automatically builds the non-English sentiment lexicons based on the available English lexicons with an unannotated corpus from the target language. This framework includes three layers, i.e., corpus-based, lexicon-based, and human-based. The first two layers can automatically recognise and then extract the novel polarity words from the huge unannotated corpus, with the help of the initial seed lexicons. The major advantage of this framework is that it needs only an initial seed lexicon and an unannotated corpus for initiating the extraction activity. This framework is seen to be semi-supervised owing to the usage of the seed lexicons. Experiments on three languages have been carried out and the proposed framework output has shown a better performance than the existing lexicons. The F-measure values for the Arabic, French and Malay lexicons were seen to be 0.778, 0.838 and 0.686, respectively

Enhancing a cluster-based TDMA MAC protocol for vehicle-to-vehicle communications / Abubakar Bello Tambawal

    No full text
Vehicular Ad hoc Network technology (VANET) is one of the emerging and promising wireless technology, providing support for vehicles to communicate and share resources, (such as safety messages) through vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications. Sequel to that the Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) MAC protocol using a cluster-based topology has been proposed by the research community. Most of the existing research works focused on the cluster head (CH) election with very few addressing other critical issues, including cluster formation, efficient time slot allocation, and cluster maintenance. These challenges result in an unstable cluster, which could affect the timely delivery of safety applications. In this thesis, a new approach called enhanced cluster-based TDMA MAC (EC-TMAC) protocol was developed to address these challenges. To achieve that, two CHs were proposed to provide strong cluster stability within the clusters; the primary cluster head (PCH) as the main CH and the secondary cluster head (SeCH) to act as a backup to the PCH. Furthermore, a new algorithm was also developed to provide an efficient CH leadership transition from PCH to SeCH when the PCH can no longer continue with the leadership responsibility. A dynamic time slot allocation strategy using a binary tree algorithm has been proposed to prevent vehicles from the adjacent clusters to reserve the same time slot. The proposed EC-TMAC protocol was evaluated through simulation and validated using a statistical analysis tool. The simulation results obtained show a better performance with increased cluster stability, low rate of merging collision and less communication overhead to the system

This study aimed at investigating the relationship between self-regulated learning strategies, social media usage, and motivation, as well as the influences of three variables to Arabic learners' Academic achievement (GPA) in Malaysian public universities. To collect the data, a number of 317 male and female undergraduate Malaysian Arabic learners were randomly selected from six public universities in Malaysia as participants of this study. The instruments were developed from Jansen et al., (2017), Monachesi et al., (2008), and Pintrich et al., (1991). Then, IBM SPSS was used for data screening and descriptive analysis whereas Smart-PLS were applied to analysis most of the inferential statistics and develop models for the influence of self-regulated learning strategies, social media usage and motivation on academic achievement, as well as the mediation effect among three variables. The findings indicated Arabic learners with medium level self-regulated learning strategies, social media usage and high level of motivation in Arabic learning. Moreover, the participants frequently use metacognitive skill and help-seeking strategies but rarely use time management in learning. Additionally, the degree of self-regulated learning strategies, social media usage, and motivation are not significantly different in gender and year of study. The result further revealed that learners' self-regulated learning strategies, social media usage, and motivation significantly correlation each other, and there is a significant effect of Arabic learners' self-regulated learning strategies on academic achievement. Meanwhile, there is no significant effect of motivation and social media usage on learners’ academic achievement. Besides, the finding of this study also indicated self-regulated learning strategies are a significant mediator of the relationship between motivation and social media usage among Arabic learners. The findings of this study provided fresh empirical evidence to support with the social cognitive theory that there is a statistically significant positive correlation between self-regulated learning strategies, social media usage and motivation in Arabic learning context in Malaysian public universities. On the other hand, this study also presented the procedures of Arabic learners using social media to support self-regulated learning in Arabic learning. This contribution finding unfolds new understandings regarding the Arabic language as second language pedagogy in Malaysia. Consequently, this study have provide several theoretical and practical implications, practicing the procedures of Arabic learners' using social media to support self-regulated learning in Arabic learning and metacognitive skills, help-seeking strategies deem to be considered crucial in Arabic learning

Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is regarded as a fertile ground for target language acquisition. However, there is a growing skepticism towards the novelty of CLIL due to various methodological flaws in the past studies. The purpose of this study is to investigate if CLIL approach truly contributes to English academic vocabulary learning when three confounding factors: selection effect, total English instruction hours and extramural English exposure are controlled. This study employs cross-sectional research design using both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods by comparing the academic vocabulary performance between secondary students in two different learning environments — regular mainstream classes and Dual Language Program (DLP), along with an interview with a DLP teacher to add depth to the overall analysis. This study involves 72 Form 2 and Form 4 students from two schools in Selangor. The results of Academic Word List (AWL) test are analyzed using independent t-tests; it is shown that there is no significant difference between DLP and non-DLP students. In other words, DLP students do not outperform non-DLP. However, it is note-worthy that the DLP group manages to stay on par with senior non-DLP students who are two years older, showing that DLP has yet to live up to its full potential. Issues hampering DLP students from reaping the full benefits of CLIL and implications of the study are therefore discussed. Although DLP does not exhibit impressive outcome in this study, the researcher is optimistic of its endeavor in Malaysia because if implemented properly, DLP is believed to have a lot more to offer, especially in academic language learning

Year five pupils’ mental model of environment / Kavitha Maslamany

    No full text
In the current society, pupils are given less opportunity to discover the natural world around them. This has resulted in ‘nature deficit disorder’ among the pupils especially among those who are living in urban areas which are surrounded by the built environments. This becomes worse when pupils get less exposure to environmental education in schools where they learn environmental concepts as disconnected pieces of information. Pupils who are unable to comprehend the environment as a complex and interconnected system will have less awareness of environmental problems. Studying pupils’ mental models of the environment enable teachers to understand pupils’ conceptualization of how the environment works as a system. Therefore, this study has been carried out to investigate the Year Five pupils’ mental models of the environment and their relationships with their perceived pro-environmental behaviours. The present study has also investigated the factors that have influenced pupils’ mental models of environment. A descriptive survey research design was employed in this study. The sample comprised 104 Year Five pupils from one of the schools in an urban area at Petaling Jaya. Pupils’ mental models or images of the environment were elicited using Draw-an-Environment Test (DAET) and were analysed using a 4-factor analytic rubric (DAET-R). Mental Model Factors and Environmental Behaviour Questionnaire (MMFEB) which consisted of two-parts were used to identify the factors that had influenced the Year Five pupils’ mental models and their perceived pro-environmental behaviours. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, content analysis and regression were used to analyse the data obtained through MMFEB. The findings revealed that 65% of the pupils in this study did not include human elements in their drawings. Overall, pupils held a moderate level of environmental mental models which is an incomplete mental model. Four types of mental models namely, Model 1 (a Perfect Environment), Model 2 (Interaction Between Human and Environment), Model 3 (Environmental Problems) and Model 4 (Solving Environmental Problems) were present among the pupils. The finding from the correlations further revealed that pupils with a higher level of mental model tended to demonstrate more positive pro-environmental behaviour. The finding further reveals that that school, experience, environmental problems and socio-culture factors have influenced the level and the types of pupils’ mental models of environment. The present study also confirms that drawings can serve as an appropriate tool to gain insights into pupils’ mental model of the environment and the relationshipwith human. Such insights are important for an impactful teaching and learning of environmental education. Teachers may also use pupils’ drawings to develop more complete mental models. A holistic view of developing curriculum and instruction is recommended to provide learning opportunities for pupils to understand the definition of environment
