    Get PDF
Patients with chronic diseases such as cancer are able to have better outcomes if they understand about all aspects of the disease, develop the correct attitude to manage themselves and their disease better; and engage in preventive practices that can help them prevent worsening of disease or recurrence. Patient education is an intervention that has proven to be effective in different settings for this. However in the Malaysian cancer setting, the educational needs of patients are poorly understood. The aim of this study was to explore and understand the educational needs of newly diagnosed cancer patients in learning about cancer in the Malaysian urban setting. Qualitative, in-depth interviews were carried out via Zoom with 23 cancer patients who were newly diagnosed over the past 6 months and had sought services at the National Cancer Society of Malaysia. The patients reported having specific educational needs at the point of diagnosis, during their treatment journey; and in terms of emotional and psychosocial management. Delivery of patient education included challenges from both the patients themselves as well as system-level delivery. Patients reported that their cancer-related educational needs were partially fulfilled but had suggestions on how to better provide effective patient education. Newly diagnosed cancer patients have educational needs that are being partially fulfilled. Further research and improvement can aid in designing and delivering better educational solutions which can benefit patients

Patients' understanding of diabetes self-management education and support in a private primary care clinic in Kuala Lumpur: A qualitative study / Tharini Thanapalan

    Get PDF
Patients with diabetes mellitus should be actively self-managing their disease, since this can aid in producing better glycaemic control. Thus healthcare professionals managing diabetes patients, irrespective of whether they are in the public or private setting, need to focus on educating patients in order to empower them to carry out self-management practices. Little evidence is available to determine whether patients, especially those managed in private primary care clinics, are able to understand the education provided to them on diabetes self-management. This study aimed to explore patients’ comprehension of content and perception regarding delivery and quality of diabetes self-management education at a private primary care clinic in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Qualitative in-depth interviews were carried out via Zoom with 21 diabetes mellitus patients being followed-up for at least 6 months at the chosen private primary clinic. Most respondents felt overwhelmed with the information given during the DSME, were mostly satisfied with quality of the delivery of DSME but not so with the deliverer of the DSME, and majority of the respondents felt that the instructional delivery of DSME did not influence either their self-efficacious behaviour nor their health literacy. Patients being followed-up in a private primary care clinic seem to have shortcomings in comprehending DSME, with further research and interventions necessary to improve patient outcomes in the Malaysian setting

English is a universal language of communication in many industries such as Education, Business, Medical, Finance, Hospitality and Digital World. The present study focuses on the oral communicative needs analysis for business students in one of the private universities in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It was reported that many employers were reluctant to employ fresh graduates due to poor communication in English (Sani, R. The NST, 2019). Therefore, the objectives of this study is to identify three things which are, the English language needs of the Business students and challenges of the business students in English language as well as to propose an English language syllabus pertaining to the workplace. This study utilized a qualitative method (Creswell, 2014) with the distributions of questionnaires to 30 business students and semi-structured interviews to business lecturers and industrial supervisors. The findings show that business students faced major problems in communicating in English language such as, incorrect pronunciations, lack of presentation skills and poor abilities to communicate with colleagues and clients. The findings further revealed that the business students need a specific course module for a Business English course and emphasis has to be on speaking and listening skills pertaining to the workplace. Some suggestions for Business English syllabus suggested by the respondents of this study are, negotiating in various situations, making polite conversations with prospective clients and telephoning skills. It is hoped that the present study would be beneficial for business students to face the real workplace challenges as English language proficiency plays an important role for employment

This research study seeks to examine the issues that are related to ‘Oral Presentation Skills among Low Proficiency ESL Undergraduates’. The two research questions that have been constructed in this study focuses on eliciting the perspective of low proficiency undergraduates on the types of oral presentation difficulties that are faced by them and the types of communicative strategies that are used by this group in coping with their oral presentation difficulties. A total of fifty one low proficiency undergraduates from 3 local private universities with a MUET score of Band 1 and Band 2 have participated as respondents for the questionnaire on oral communication strategy inventory (OCSI) that has been adapted from Nakatani’s (2006) framework. From the total number of participants, thirteen of them were selected for an individual interview session to understand their views on the types of difficulties and challenges that are faced by them when giving an oral presentation. The interview was a semi structured interview where the questions that were posed had been carefully constructed with reference to Dornyei and Scott’s 1997 framework. The findings emphasises that despite facing similar types of difficulties as listed in Dornyei and Scott’s (1997) study, this particular group of undergraduates also faces difficulties in aspects involving affective factors and topical knowledge. In terms of the type of strategies that were used, fluency oriented strategies was revealed to be the most used strategy based on the rankings of all the 8 strategies that were listed, while message abandonment strategies had been ranked the lowest and the least used strategy among them. The findings generated from this study would benefit lecturers in understanding the challenges that are faced by undergraduates in terms of oral presentation. This would help lecturers to choose and improve on their teaching approaches and methods that were used in ESL lessons to fit the learning style and needs of ESL undergraduates especially those from the low proficiency group. By exposing students with a variety of communication strategies, it could help students to overcome their difficulties in doing an oral presentation

Translation of humour in the English subtitles of two Malaysian Chinese films / Tu Kah Yee

    Get PDF
This study attempts to investigate humour translation in two Malaysian Chinese New Year films: Woohoo! and The Journey. There are two objectives of this study: i) to find out the translation strategies used in subtitling humour into English subtitles, and ii) to analyse whether the humour in the films is effectively translated into English subtitles. Chiaro’s (2010) strategies for subtitling verbally expressed humour (VEH) are adopted to analyse the strategies employed in subtitling humour. The results of the study show that leaving the humour unchanged and ignoring the humour are the two most common strategies used in subtitling humour in the selected films. Moreover, it is found that for some humorous instances, a combination of strategies is used to translate the humour. The findings also reveal that some subtitling strategies are more commonly used in translating certain types of humour. To answer the second research question, Martínez_Sierra’s (2006) methodology is adopted to investigate the effectiveness of the translation of humour by analysing the humorous elements found in the source language and the target language. The findings show that humorous elements are preserved, changed or lost in the English subtitles. In addition, the findings reveal that humour that is generated based on linguistic elements is the most difficult type to translate

DASS-21, Carga Mental Questionnaire, and Job Satisfaction Survey were used to gather data from the participants. Socio-demographic data were collected from participants too. The results showed mental workloads level is low among the workers while the level of job satisfaction is average. However, the level of stress among female workers is mild which is slightly higher than males. There are significant correlations between age of workers and mental workloads (CarMen-Q) based on statistical analysis. The age of workers positively correlates with performance demands, cognitive demands, and emotional demands in this organization except for temporal demands. The relationship between job satisfaction and mental workloads was evaluated using SPSS software to find the correlations. Additionally, there are opportunities for improvement by top management to conduct campaigns and programs to increase awareness on mental health and to review current job grade, compensation and benefits packages for improvement of job satisfaction (related to promotion, operating conditions, contingent rewards, and fringe benefits)

The study aims to examine acoustically the production of monophthongs of Penang Malay by five (5) selected female participants who are of the Jawi Peranakan community. Two (2) female participants of Standard Malay were also selected as a comparator to Penang Malay. The first research question focuses on the acoustic features of Penang Malay and Standard Malay based on their formant frequencies of F1 and F2, while the second research question examines the similarities and differences between Penang Malay and Standard Malay based on their acoustic properties. The target vowels are: [a], [i], [u], [ɛ], [ɔ], [ə], [e], and [o]. A series of words were used in eliciting data from the participants. The tokens produced by the participants were recorded and analyzed based on the Formant Frequency Model. The findings reveal that the participants of Penang Malay generally did not distinguish between [ɛ] and [e] and conflated them as one vowel. The findings also suggest that Penang Malay and Kedah Malay are not homogenous as claimed by past researchers

Perbandingan terjemahan metafora antara Merpati Putih Terbang Lagi dan Rang Bai Ge Zai Ci Fei Xiang / Nur Akmal Othman

    No full text

Implementation of NAPTIP policy in Nigeria / Usman Mika’il Usman

    No full text
Human trafficking is a complex, clandestine and a global issue involving countries, as a source, transit or destination nations. Nigeria has been a severe source country. The exploitation of young females into sex trafficking in Nigeria is highly prevalent than other types of trafficking in the country. Fortunately, the government shows willingness and readiness to fight human trafficking. In this context, the passage of the first private bill saw the establishment of a National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and other related matters in the year 2003. The NAPTIP Act is the primary policy document dealing with sex trafficking that shapes the implementation measures to protect, prevent, prosecute and assist trafficked victims. Accordingly, it is essential that this thesis tries to bridge the research gap by assessing human trafficking in light of the responses and impact to the stakeholders, especially government NAPTIP officers responsible for policy implementation of sex trafficking. This is a qualitative study that uses semi-structured interviews, observations, and document analysis of policy implementation in the aspect of sex trafficking in Nigeria. The study investigates the experiences of multiple actors. The informants are four female-trafficked victims, seventeen government NAPTIP officers, two academics and five non-governmental organisation representatives engaged in the human trafficking implementation of the policy. There are minimal empirical studies on human trafficking implementation of policy in Nigeria. Interestingly, concentrating on the NAPTIP officers as the primary implementers, this thesis contributes to and fills the gap to the improvement of policy implementation in light of the sex trafficking perspective. The feminist theory investigates the state of female exploitation, top-down and bottom-up theories examine the implementation process. These theories were distinguished as the basis for building up a conceptual framework to analyse and explain human trafficking: implementation of NAPTIP policy in Nigeria. The following five themes were apparent: socio-economic issues, socio-cultural issues, organisational issues, political issues, and policy issues. The investigation demonstrates the importance to address these variables that affect NAPTIP policy implementation. The research gives recommendations to the government of Nigeria to minimise the exploitative factors to female sex trafficking and improve the implementation process of human trafficking policy
