Oral corrective feedback preferences among lower secondary ESL students / Thavamani Sivasamy
The study explored low proficiency (LP), intermediate proficiency (IP), and high proficiency (HP) ESL students’ preferences on oral corrective feedback (OCF) in the Malaysian lower secondary school context. It made comparisons between LP, IP, and HP ESL students’ preferences for types of OCF, choice of correctors, and timings of OCF. A total of 90 lower secondary ESL students were selected as participants with proficiency levels based on school examination scores. The participants responded to a set of survey questionnaires consisting of 17 items about types of OCF, choice of correctors, and timings of OCF. Two students from each proficiency level were also interviewed individually to obtain some in-depth understandings of the students’ preferences. The data from the questionnaire revealed a high preference for Explicit Feedback type among the students, while Elicitation was the least preferred type of OCF. Both quantitative and qualitative data indicated teachers as the most favoured corrector while self-correction was the least favoured. Regardless of the students’ proficiency levels, the students preferred immediate feedback to delayed feedback. Meanwhile, between groups comparisons showed a statistically significant difference between LP and IP students for types of OCF and between LP and HP students for timings of CF. These findings suggest that not only different proficiency levels, but also specific learning contexts should be considered when providing corrective feedback to ESL students and students may expect their teachers to identify and use various types of corrective feedback in an adaptable way that suits their current proficiency level
Content analysis of energy and sustainability of life in Malaysian form two science textbook / Lim Yi Xing
Textbooks are predominantly use as an instructional tool in classrooms. This research is driven due to significant role possess which then affects classroom teaching and learning delivery. Hence, textbooks analysis is imperative as it helps to rectify and strengthen the textbooks for teachers to deliver effective learning. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to analyse this valuable learning tool of Form Two Science textbook as it may acts as one of the reasons that affects the accomplishment of learning objectives. This qualitative research consists of two data collection techniques which were content analysis and interview. The textbook was analysed using conceptual framework from Florida University Department of Education (FLDOE) while the interview data were interpreted deductively. The content was analysed based on three elements which were (i) content, (ii) presentation and (iii) assessments. Only four chapters from the theme ‘Energy and Sustainability of Life’ were analysed due to its physics related concepts which consider difficult for students. In addition, four teachers’ perceptions on the content, presentation and assessments of the Science textbook were obtained as they have hands-on experience to produce data triangulation with meaningful results. The content analysis found all the requirements set by national syllabus were aligned with textbook. Nevertheless, the analysis from the four chapters of the textbook found only one example of designing experiment which may affect the effectiveness to cultivate problem solving skills among students. Other criteria that emerged from this research were caring, patriotic and STEM careers. However, results found that limited examples may results in lower efficiency of objectives to be achieved in real life. Meanwhile, the textbook does not consist of any error in scientific theory, however few in websites and grammatical errors were found. In terms of presentation, it consists of attractive and clear organisation, but lacks of labelling in figure and colour cues. It was also discovered that the chapter summaries were good, however, without much beneficial information. Results also shown some of the visuals possess glaring texts with complex background. The cartoon comic presented consists majority of single panel image compared to sequential story which may able to bring pleasure in reading for Generation Z. Whereas in context of assessments, it was discovered that the activities, formative and summative practices questions were majority under LOTS category compared to HOTS category. From the interview data, it was asserted by teachers the need to increase the number of HOTS questions in the textbook since examination questions will be difficult. Findings also shown that teachers encounter time constraint in the classroom which causes the textbook unable to be fully utilized which is something need to be taken into consideration in order to fully utilised a good textbook. This research able to further intervene as it holds valuable notions to tackle effectively the highlighted keys and limitations by producing competent textbooks in the future for the benefits of students
Malay compound words in Nyonya recipes / Krithiga Devan Nair
This research reports on the structure of compound expressions of Malay and Chinese, languages established in the convention of Nyonya delicacies found in Malaysian cookbooks. The research design adopted in this study is qualitative case study that targets the compound word formations in Baba Malay. The data are analysed using Lieber’s theoretical frameworks on compound structures; “Feature Percolation Conventions” (1980) and “Argument-linking Principle” (1983). The data collection methods include Nyonya recipes published in two cookbooks of a local chef, YouTube channel videos of the same chef, and researcher’s observation. The choice of using cookbooks, YouTube videos and observation notes is to validate the study’s reliability through data triangulation. The results indicated that the majority of the compound words identified are Malay compound words with borrowed Hokkien words. The compound structure is also an adaptation of both Malay and Chinese linguistic structure
The moderating roles of ownership concentration and foreign ownership on enterprise risk management and firm performance / Zhang Lan Jun
This study examines the relationship between enterprise risk management, firm performance, and the moderating role of ownership concentration and foreign ownership on the relationship between enterprise risk management and enterprise performance. The study uses 6015 listed firms in the Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) and the Shenzhen Stock Exchange (SZSE) from 2016 to 2018. The results indicate that enterprise risk management significantly influences both short-term and long-term firm performance based on multiple regression and panel data analysis. The study also found that ownership concentration positively moderates the relationship between enterprise risk management and both short-term and long-term firm performance. However, foreign ownership is found to moderate the relationship between enterprise risk management only for long-term performance but has no significant effect on short-term performance. The results indicate that firms are advised to implement enterprise risk management to gain a competitive advantage and superior performance. At the same time, paying more attention to ownership concentration and foreign ownership is required
Political systems and revolution: The cases of Egypt and Tunisia / Ibrahim S.I Rabaia
Revolution in MENA is a long-term process needing a long time to correct the structural failures of the existing political systems. In other words, revolutions were created to change the status quo, pave the way to a breakthrough in the political system, and open the political sphere by introducing a more inclusive and dynamic process for entering these systems. The mismatch between inputs and outcomes in the Egyptian and Tunisian political systems produced failures in dealing with the political, economic, and social demands of the revolutionary powers in both countries. Such a failure increased the chances of success for the counter-revolutionary political structures in Egypt, who kept their positions after the revolution. The literature of the Middle East and Arab Spring studies have not yet been satisfactory in exploring the political changes and political systems of MENA, to find out why the consolidation of democracy in this context is difficult. This research aims to investigate the ability of political systems to tackle and transform sudden and unexpected shocking political events, such as revolutions. This research explores the ability of political systems to reproduce themselves based on changes in institutions and functions. Before the revolution, the political systems in Egypt and Tunisia were ambiguous in that they had limited institutions and distribution of power. Revolutions in both countries created cracks in these stable political systems and paved the way for new players who have no experience to get involved in politics. This study focuses on the relationship between the revolution and the institutions of the political system, starting from the revolutionary deadlock in the MENA. While the theoretical part of the study is based on the theory of the political system of Egyptian and Tunisian politics, the empirical part discusses the relationship between revolutions and political systems in an actor-centered approach
Perception of undergraduate medical students on integration of radiological anatomy for pre-clinical teaching / Reshma Mohamed Ansari
Integration is the way forward to enable accommodation of the ever-expanding
content in medical education. While revising the curriculum, stakeholders’ perception
aids to tailor a curriculum matching their needs. Radiological anatomy (RA) is an
integrated discipline of topographical, cross-sectional anatomy with radiological
representation of structural anatomy. Though RA has been widely incorporated in most
of the medical curricula, there is a dearth of standardization in terms of student learning
time (SLT), content and teachers. This study was planned to record the perception of
MBBS students on RA teaching in pre-clinical years in University of Cyberjaya,
Malaysia. A modified, piloted and validated questionnaire was administered to year 1 to
year 5 MBBS students through Google forms. Data received from 405 students was
analysed using SPSS version 25. Though the unanimous response indicated adequate
SLT, year 3 students (62%) felt that the current RA teaching is too little for them in
their year of study. Radiologists and anatomists had a different approach while teaching
RA. Students expressed that RA taught as practical sessions, problem-based learning
(PBL) sessions and clinical correlation (CC) sessions are more effective rather than self�directed learning. As for the content, pre-clinical students preferred limbs, head and
neck and brain to comprehend topographical anatomy. On the contrary, clinical students
preferred thorax and abdomen as relevant content for practise. X-ray and computed
tomography (CT) were the most preferred radiological modalities due to their
availability and feasibility. As an overall measure to improve RA teaching students
suggested teaching-learning methods that encompass their active learning, modules with
films and sound explanations, increase in SLT and radiologists as future RA teachers.
The student responses provided an insight into the changes to be implemented and
directions for future research
Speech features analysis of the joint speech separation and automatic speech recognition model / Tawseef Khan
Speech recognition of target speakers from a mixture of voiced noises from interfering speakers in a single channel is a complex task. This is because the speech signal pattern of both the target and interfering speakers are similar and can be challenging to distinguish from one another. If the target speaker’s speech can be correctly identified, such a system can be used in interviews, courtrooms, transcribing video subtitles, etc. During conversations between multiple speakers, it is common for the voices to overlap. In such cases, it is important to separate the speech of the target speaker based on one single audio signal. To date, ASR models are good at recognizing lexical data in white/background noises though they are unable to perform well with other voiced noises. Recently a joint speech separation and ASR model was proposed that can handle both the task of speech separation and recognition into one component in an end-to-end fashion. Two key factors affecting the accuracy of ASR models are the type of features used to build the model and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the target signal. This research compares different features to find the optimum features for the joint speech separation and ASR model at different SNR levels. Ten features that were previously used in speech separation of voiced noise have been used to test the accuracy of the model at SNR levels -10, -5, 0, 5, +5 (dB). The experiment evaluates the Word Error Rate (WER) of Speech separation and ASR separately within the joint speech separation and ASR model. Ten features that were used for speech separation in previous studies were evaluated, which are STFT, LOG-POW, LOG-MEL, LOG-MAG, GF, GFCC, MFCC, PNCC, RASTA-PLP (Relative Spectral - Perceptual Predictive), and AMS. At SNR level -10, GF and GFCC was found to have the lowest WER. For SNR levels -5, 0, 5, 10 the lowest WER was achieved by GF, PNCC, STFT, and GF
Modelling and analysis of performance for biogas fuelled gas engine using MATLAB / Indran Kunusilin
A wide-ranging performance evaluation of a multi-cylinder gas engine operating wit biogas as a fuel were studied based on its performance parameters such as effective power, torque, SFC, MEP and Thermal Efficiency and its HRR analysis with the aid of modeling software, MATLAB. The analysis and performance study were used based on the thermodynamic model of an Otto cycle, which is based on the gas engines used. Parameters such as cylinder pressure with domain of crank angle and heat addition model (using Wiebe function ) were studied to model the and analyze the HRR .Besides that , the contributing factors in the efficiency and performance of the engine were deduced such as fluctuating HRR and increased thermal efficiency determining the performance optimization of the engine . The results obtain from the study were compared using the trend demonstrated with similar gas engine models. This research would set a milestone to extended research on the gas engines used in the industrial scale for performance enhancement and optimization
Analysis of voltage sag severity caused by fault in power system network / Ng Guan Qun
Power quality issues have become more important to the industry as the impacts created such as plant downtime, production waste, and shorten equipment lifespan are not only caused the financial loss to the industry but also reduce their competitiveness in the market. Besides that, due to the industrial revolution, manufacturing is moving forward to automation, robotics technology, and advance digital technology to have better collaboration, control, and understanding of each operation across all the departments, vendors, products, and people. Therefore, high quality and high-reliability power supply are required in the industry due to the sensitiveness of that electronic equipment especially for the industries such as semiconductor, electronic, computer, and business. As the voltage sag is one of the biggest power quality issues faced by the industry. This study, therefore, aims to analyze the voltage sag severity by a fault in a power system network. An IEEE 14 bus distribution system network will be modeled, and the fault would be applied into the system network and simulated by Power world software. The result of the voltage sag will be recorded and analyzed. Finally, to choose the best location which has the lesser impact of voltage sag when the faults occurred to build a semiconductor manufacturing factory
Cat flea infestation, evolution and endosymbionts, and community awareness towards fleas and flea-borne diseases / Noor Azrizal Abdul Wahid
The cat flea Ctenocephalides felis is the cosmopolitan ectoparasite infesting cats. Occurrence of this flea on cats has led to several disease problems resulted from its ectoparasitic activity and associated pathogens. For prevention measure, study on its prevalence and genetic structure can help in identifying the infestation risk factors and its vectorial capability. In this study, infestation survey indicated overall high prevalence (71.8 %) of C. felis on cats sampled from four different regions in Peninsular Malaysia and the prevalence was associated (p < 0.05) with several risk factors including age, body weight, hair length, body condition and status of the cats. Among the regions, infestation rate was significantly highest on cat population in western region (28.9 %). Moreover, an assessment of knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) among cat owners showed possession of moderate level for knowledge on fleas and relatively low level for knowledge on flea-borne diseases. However, there were positive attitudes and good practices shown by the community in regard to prevention measures. Principle Component Analysis of KAP level, nevertheless, did not exert any variability among the respondents from different regions. Furthermore, analysis of cat flea mtDNA inferred from barcoding genes (cox1 and cox2) showed genetic variations between the four regions with western demonstrated the highest genetic diversity (Hd = 0.7833, Pi = 0.0127, Nh = 9). However, in overall, this study observed low nucleotide and haplotype diversities, indicating high homogeneity in genetic content among flea populations resulted from high gene flow. There were 15 haplotype numbers (AB1 – AB15) revealed in cat flea populations in Malaysia. Global comparison, however, indicated that Malaysian cat fleas had limited geographical distribution within Southeast Asian region while had genetic proximity with population from tropical region. Analyses of endosymbiont bacteria showed that cat fleas in Peninsular Malaysia carry Bartonella and Rickettsia bacteria with 28 % of flea samples were positive for Bartonella DNA and 14 % for Rickettsia DNA. Meanwhile, the tested flea populations were negative for Mycoplasma infection. Three Bartonella species were recorded including B. clarridgeiae, B. hensalae and the first record in Malaysia, B. koehlerae. Meanwhile, Rickettsia asembonensis was the only rickettsial bacteria identified in the present study. Statistical analyses revealed no association on the bacterial infection towards the mtDNA diversity of the cat fleas. However, in overall pathogen infection, infected population demonstrated lower haplotype and nucleotide diversities and showed lower number of haplotypes. Ultimately, the finding from this study will be beneficial in flea management and control program related to veterinary practices by providing insights on flea infestation, community awareness, evolution and its associated pathogens. The present findings highlighted the need for ongoing public health programs, given the relatively low possession of flea related knowledge among cat owners, and high infection rates of pathogens in cat flea populations in Peninsular Malaysia
