Music accompaniment in Kun Seng Keng Lion dance during Genting World Lion Dance Championship from 1994-2018 / Lim Hong Zhi
Lion Dance is a diasporic Chinese tradition and a typical performing arts genre in
Malaysia. Mostly with the goal of promoting lion dance, Malaysia has been the first to
organise the Genting World Lion Dance Championship biannually by the Genting Group
and Selangor Dragon and Lion Dance Federation since 1994 in Arena Star, Genting,
Malaysia. Competition has altered the context of street lion dance performances, and there
is inadequate of research on modern re-contextualised lion dance in previous works of
literature, including new elements applied to its performance and music. Therefore, this
study addresses the literature gap by choosing the Kun Seng Keng Lion Dance and
Dragon Association in Malaysia as its subject for research and analysed changes to
accompanying traditional lion dance music within the framework of the competition. The
Kun Seng Keng Lion Dance and Dragon Association established an international
reputation with twelve champions in the past thirteen World Genting Lion Dance
Championships from 1994 to 2018 and won the East Lion King title. Video analysis,
performance analysis, transcription, analysis of the score, semi-structured interviews and
observation are the approaches used during this study. The results of this study reveal a
discussion about cultural changes and musical significance in the context of recontextualised
lion dance competitions
A neighbourhood undersampling stacked ensemble with H-measure maximising meta-learner for imbalanced classification / Seng Zian
Stacked ensemble formulates an ensemble using a meta-learner to combine (stack)
the predictions of multiple base classifiers. It suffers from the problem of suboptimal
performance in imbalanced classification. Several underlying difficulty factors are reported
to be responsible for performance degradation in imbalanced classification. This research
aims to improve the classification performance of the stacked ensemble on imbalanced
datasets by investigating the stacked ensemble’s meta-learner and the underlying difficulty
factors (i.e., class imbalance, class overlapping, and class noise). Since the stacked
ensemble’s imbalanced classification performance depends on the configuration of its
meta-learner, an experiment (i.e., Experiment 1) was conducted to identify the best
performing type of meta-learner. The results of Experiment 1 showed that the weighted
combination-based meta-learner outperformed other types of meta-learners. Also, based
on Experiment 1’s result, the ‘AUC-maximising meta-learner’ is one of the best performing
weighted combination-based meta-learners. Inspired by the superior performance of the
AUC-maximising meta-learner (in Experiment 1) and the importance of H-measure (in the
literature), a new weighted combination-based meta-learner that maximises the H-measure
(i.e., H-measure maximising meta-learner) was further proposed. Experiment 2 was
conducted to evaluate the proposed H-measure maximising meta-learner. Then, it was
benchmarked with the top 3 meta-learners in Experiment 1 and superior classification
performance of the proposed meta-learner was observed. Then, this research further
investigated the stacked ensemble’s degradation problem from the perspective of underlying difficulty factors in imbalanced datasets. A stacked ensemble coined as Neighbourhood
Undersampling Stacked Ensemble (NUS-SE) was proposed. The NUS-SE consists of two
proposed components, i.e., the US-SE framework and the Neighbourhood Undersampling.
Experiment 3 was performed to evaluate the performance of the proposed NUS-SE. Since
NUS-SE is integrable with any meta-learner, the top 3 meta-learners in Experiment 1
and the proposed H-measure maximising meta-learner were used as the meta-learners
of NUS-SE in Experiment 3. Based on Experiment 3’ results, the NUS-SE with Hmeasure
maximising meta-learner (NUS-SE-H) outperformed all the original unmodified
stacked ensembles with different meta-learners and the proposed NUS-SE with other
top-performing meta-learners (i.e., NUS-SE-AUC, NUS-SE-CCLL, NUS-SE-NNLS)
Computation of pinch dynamics in plasma focus discharge using Lee model / Lim Ling Hong
The dynamics of plasma focus discharge modelled by Lee code is investigated with the
objective to improve the accuracy of the model in the radial phase. Lee model code has
been developed based on the motion and circuit equations of a plasma focus discharge
and the empirical data obtained in Mather type plasma focus. Lee model simulates the
dynamics of the plasma focus discharge in five phases; the axial phase, radial inward
shock phase, radial reflected shock phase, slow compression (pinch) phase and expanded
column phase. The radial reflected shock phase is a phase in between the radial inward
shock phase and pinch phase. This phase starts when the collisional inward shock hits the
central axis of anode and a reflected shock is produced. This phase ends when the
outwards moving reflected shock meets with the incoming magnetic piston. The
dynamics of the radial trajectories in the Lee model is investigated in this thesis.
Comparison between the computation and measured radial trajectories for two different
types of electrode of plasma focus machines is done. The comparison shows a good
agreement between the computation and measured results. Optimisation of neutron yield
operated in deuterium and radiation yield operated in Argon, Neon and Nitrogen for
several different plasma focus machines is done and the radial trajectories are
investigated. Radiation cooling and collapse of the focus pinches are studied. It is found
that radiation cooling generally occurs when plasma focus machines are operated in Neon.
The radiation cooling becomes severe enough to induce radiation collapse when plasma
focus machines are operated in Argon. Amendments to the radial reflected shock speed
and temperature in the Lee model are presented. The present Lee code models the radial
reflected shock with a constant speed. Because of this simplistic assumption, there is a
discontinuity in temperature at the point of transition from the radial reflected shock phase to the pinch phase that has no physical basis. The temperature of the reflected shock phase
is calculated from the reflected shock speed whilst the pinch temperature is calculated by
Bennett balance. The amendment algorithm presented in this thesis adjusts the radial
outward reflected shock speed at any point in accordance with the radial inward flow
speed at that point during the radial inward shock phase. This amendment algorithm
results in the reflected shock temperature profile transitioning smoothly into the pinch
temperature profile when the outwardly moving reflected shock hits the incoming driving
piston. This amendment to the reflected shock phase successfully removes the discrepant
discontinuity in temperature profile at the transition point from reflected phase to pinch
phase. Several plasma focus machines are then used with this amended Lee model and
the radial trajectories are investigated. A step-by- step derivation of the Lee model is also
presented in this thesis together with the model flowcharts. Normalisation of the radial
reflected shock phase and the radial compression (pinch) phase has not been done before
and is presented in this thesis for the first time
Hubungan kepuasan kerja dengan kesejahteraan hidup guru prasekolah di negeri Selangor / Wan Izani Wan Idris
Kajian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji hubungan antara kepuasan kerja dengan kesejahteraan hidup guru prasekolah di negeri Selangor. Selain itu, kajian ini turut bertujuan untuk meninjau sama ada terdapat perbezaan signifikan di antara jantina dan umur terhadap kepuasan kerja dan juga kesejahteraan hidup guru prasekolah. Kajian korelasi yang bercirikan pengaruh (predictive features) digunakan dalam kajian ini untuk mengukur tahap hubungan antara kepuasan kerja dan kesejahteraan hidup guru. Kajian ini melibatkan set data 610 responden yang terdiri daripada responden perempuan adalah sebanyak 565 (92.6%), sementara responden lelaki adalah 45 (7.4%). Sampel kajian dipilih dengan teknik pensampelan rawak berkelompok kerana ianya lebih sesuai dimana kajian ini memilih kumpulan bukan individu. Dua instrumen Kepuasan Kerja Guru (TJSS-Teacher Job Satisfaction Scale) dan kesejahteraan hidup (PERMA-Profiler) telah diadaptasi bagi mengukur pembolehubah yang dikehendaki. Pengkaji menggunakan SPSS 23.0 untuk menganalisis statistik deskriptif, AMOS 18.0 pula digunakan untuk menganalisis model persamaan berstruktur (SEM). Keputusan SEM menunjukkan bahawa terdapat kesepadanan model bagi kepuasan kerja guru dan kesejahteraan hidup guru prasekolah di Selangor. Analisis SEM juga menunjukkan bahawa kepuasan kerja guru mempunyai hubungan dengan kesejahteraan hidup guru secara signifikan. Namun dapatan kajian juga menunjukkan sub-konstruk kepuasan kerja dengan murid tidak memberi kesan yang signifikan terhadap kesejahteraan hidup guru prasekolah. Analisis MANOVA menyatakan bahawa tidak ada perbezaan yang signifikan dalam kesejahteraan hidup guru prasekolah di negeri Selangor berdasarkan faktor jantina. Sebaliknya, keputusan menunjukkan terdapat perbezaan yang signifikan dalam kesejahteraan hidup guru prasekolah di negeri Selangor berdasarkan faktor umur. Ujian MANOVA yang dijalankan juga menunjukkan tidak ada perbezaan yang signifikan dalam kepuasan kerja guru prasekolah di negeri Selangor dengan faktor jantina dan umur. Dapatan kajian ini berimplikasi bahawa pihak yang bertanggungjawab seperti pentadbir perlu maklumat atau data kepada perkara-perkara yang boleh mewujudkan persekitaran yang positif di sekolah dan dapat meningkatkan kepuasan kerja guru dan kesejahteraan hidup guru prasekolah
Kajian psikologi humanistik watak Mardiah dalam naskhah Pokok Karya Johan Jaaffar / Engku Nor Zalifah Engku Abdul Rased
Kajian mengenai watak dan perwatakan mempunyai perkaitan yang rapat dengan ilmu psikologi. Aspek psikologi membatasi tingkah laku, pemikiran dan kegiatan yang dilakukan oleh watak dalam sesebuah naskhah. Tingkah laku dan pemikiran ini merupakan data yang menjadi petunjuk kepada keadaan jiwa dan mental watak. Kajian psikologi watak ke atas karya-karya seni di Malaysia kebanyakannya bertumpu kepada watak-watak dalam karya prosa sementara sangat sedikit fokus diberikan kepada kajian watak dalam drama. Manakala teori yang digunakan banyak bertumpu pada teori klasik seperti Sigmund Freud. Pengkaji percaya terdapat satu pendekatan lain yang boleh diteroka untuk membincangkan psikologi watak dan perwatakan iaitu Teori Psikologi Humanistik oleh Abraham Maslow. Teori ini menyarankan lima tingkat hierarki keperluan watak yang perlu dilalui oleh manusia sebelum mencapai ciri-ciri unggul dan aktualisasi diri. Justeru, pengkaji memulakan sebuah penyelidikan berkaitan psikologi watak Mardiah dalam naskhah drama Pokok karya Johan Jaaffar menerusi kerangka teoritikal Maslow ini. Mardiah merupakan watak seorang wanita yang telah mengalami pelbagai peristiwa tragik dalam hidupnya, tetapi akhirnya memilih untuk tidak mengalah malah bangkit sebagai manusia yang lebih baik, mencari kesempurnaan hidup dalam caranya sendiri. Objektif penyelidikan ini adalah untuk menganalisis aspek emosi serta konflik watak Mardiah dalam mengemukakan simbol keunggulan seorang wanita. Aspek tersebut akan diinterpretasi melalui pengalaman watak Mardiah yang akhirnya mencapai kesempurnaan dan aktualisasi diri. Kajian ini adalah sebuah kajian kualitatif dengan reka bentuk analisis kandungan sebagai pendekatan menganalisis serta menginterpretasi watak Mardiah. Data dikumpul melalui pembacaan teliti serta temu bual. Maklumat yang diperoleh kemudiannya diklasifikasikan berdasarkan lima hierarki keperluan watak seperti yang terkandung dalam Teori Psikologi Humanistik Maslow. Hasil kajian ini telah mengangkat watak Mardiah sebagai simbol wanita unggul yang memiliki potensi diri tertinggi. Penemuan potensi tertinggi dalam watak Mardiah ditandai menerusi tiga aspek penting iaitu: aspek emosi, konflik watak dan simbol keunggulan watak Mardiah. Melalui proses pengalaman dan kerendahan hati yang dimiliki Mardiah, wataknya berhasil menuju ke arah aktualisasi pada pengakhiran hidupnya kerana dia mampu melepasi masa-masa sukar yang berlaku akibat perlakuan dirinya sendiri mahupun pengaruh persekitaran. Kajian kuasi-eksperimen terhadap modul pengintegrasian Sains Kesihatan dalam kurikulum Pendidikan Islam tingkatan satu / Mohammad Syukor Mohammad Ghulam
Pengintegrasian Sains Kesihatan dalam Pendidikan Islam dalam sistem Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Menengah (KSSM) merupakan pendekatan pembelajaran dan pemudahcaraan dengan menggabungkan pengetahuan sains tentang kesihatan dan pencegahan penyakit ke dalam mata pelajaran Pendidikan Islam. Pendidikan Islam perlu diintegrasikan dengan ilmu moden seperti Sains supaya kekal relevan. Ini kerana pengintegrasian tersebut dapat menarik minat murid-murid serta menjadikan ilmu yang dipelajari lebih mudah untuk difahami. Hakikatnya, guru Pendidikan Islam bersedia menerima sebarang inovasi bagi meningkatkan tahap pengajaran mereka. Dalam masa yang sama, terdapat banyak amalan ibadah dalam Islam dikaitkan dengan kebaikan dari sudut kesihatan menurut perspektif Sains. Namun, hingga kini belum ada modul Pendidikan Islam yang diintegrasikan dengan Sains Kesihatan. Sehubungan itu, perlu dijalankan satu kajian mengenai pengintegrasian Sains Kesihatan dalam Pendidikan Islam. Fokus utama kajian ini ialah membina modul Pengintegrasian Sains Kesihatan dalam Pendidikan Islam KSSM Tingkatan 1 dan mengkaji keberkesanan penggunaan modul tersebut. Namun, secara terperincinya, terdapat enam objektif yang dirangka dalam kajian ini iaitu (1) membina modul pengintegrasian Sains Kesihatan dalam Pendidikan Islam Tingkatan Satu, (2) mengenal pasti min markah ujian pra bagi responden kumpulan Kawalan dan Eksperimen, (3) mengenalpasti min markah ujian pasca bagi responden kumpulan Kawalan dan Eksperimen, (4) menganalisis perbezaan min markah ujian pra antara responden kumpulan Kawalan dan kumpulan Eksperimen, (5) menganalisis perbezaan min markah ujian Pasca antara responden kumpulan Kawalan dan kumpulan Eksperimen, (6) menganalisis tingkah laku minat belajar dalam kalangan peserta kumpulan Eksperimen ketika proses pembelajaran dan pemudahcaraan. Kajian ini telah menghasilkan sebuah modul Pengintegrasian Sains Kesihatan dalam Pendidikan Islam KSSM Tingkatan Satu serta telah disahkan benar oleh beberapa orang pakar dalam bidang Sains Perubatan, Pendidikan dan Pengajian Islam. Bagi menguji keberkesanan penggunaan modul tersebut, kajian ini telah menggunakan reka bentuk Kuasi-Eksperimen bagi memperolehi data secara Kuantitatif. Kajian ini melibatkan seramai 50 orang murid yang terdiri daripada dua buah kelas yang dipilih secara persampelan mudah di sebuah sekolah di bawah pentadbiran Pejabat Pendidikan Daerah Bangsar iaitu seramai 25 orang murid dipilih sebagai kumpulan Kawalan dan 25 orang lagi sebagai kumpulan Eksperimen. Sebagai sokongan bagi dapatan analisis keberkesanan, kaedah pemerhatian dilaksanakan bagi mengenalpasti tingkah laku minat belajar dalam kalangan kumpulan Eksperimen dan didapati mereka melakukan beberapa tingkah laku minat belajar iaitu memberi tumpuan sepenuhnya kepada pengajaran guru, memberikan tindak balas yang positif kepada aktiviti pembelajaran serta melaksanakan tugasan yang diberi dengan sempurna. Kesimpulannya, kajian ini menunjukkan bahawa penggunaan modul Pengintegrasian Sains Kesihatan dalam Pendidikan Islam KSSM Tingkatan Satu memberi kesan dalam menjadikan murid-murid lebih memahami pembelajaran yang mereka lalui. Perkara ini diharapkan dapat menjadikan murid-murid lebih berminat untuk mengamalkannya seterusnya mengurangkan masalah sosial dan masalah disiplin dalam kalangan mereka. Sehubungan itu, modul Pengintegrasian Sains Kesihatan dalam Pendidikan Islam KSSM Tingkatan Satu perlu diperkenalkan kepada para guru Pendidikan Islam untuk digunakan secara meluas dalam pengajaran mereka
Design of a finger exoskeleton for hand rehabilitation / Fan Baoyuan
A large number of people who suffer from the impairment of hand due to the
consequences of stroke, aging, and trauma. They lost the ability to grasp and the basic
function of hands movements. It caused so much problems and inconvenience for patients
because hands are extremely important in both work and life. Thus, a device to aid, assist
and rehabilitate the fingers’ movement is necessary and called upon. Many researches
have investigated into the possibilities of various approaches to tackle the issue. Therefore
I designed and manufactured a novel exoskeleton device in order to reach a rehabilitation
goal for hand and fingers. Servo motor and Arduino uno were adopted to build the device.
The methodology was used in this project is quantitative approach to determine the degree
of the PIP joint of each finger, and use two different measurement which are conventional
way and Kinovea way. The design process and the manufacture process were conducted
in the lab at Kuala Lumpur, the data were collected in China, all the participants are
Chinese. Their age is between 13 to 34. 19 subjects were participated in the experiments.
They were asked to performed a set of movements for right hand fingers. They need to
flex their fingers into the maximum angles and extend into minimum angles, therefore
reaching extremes of motion. Only the right hand was needed and only the data at PIP
joints were recorded. The differences for degree of ROM among subjects were discussed,
and differences of the degree of ROM of each joint were discussed. By comparing with
the data, we can conclude that the device can mimic real hands and finger movements for
rehabilitation goal
Penerapan nilai integriti dalam kalangan murid sekolah menengah melalui mata pelajaran sejarah / Jaya Murugan Chandran
Kajian ini dijalankan bertujuan mengkaji sejauh mana penerapan nilai integriti dalam kalangan murid sekolah menengah dilaksanakan melalui pengajaran dan pemudahcaraan mata pelajaran Sejarah. Kajian ini juga berbeza dengan kajian-kajian terdahulu yang lebih berfokus kepada nilai-nilai moral dalam mata-mata pelajaran lain. Kajian ini dijalankan di bandar Seremban dengan melibatkan tiga buah sekolah kluster dan murid-murid tingkatan empat sebagai sampel kajian. Di samping itu, guru-guru yang dipilih sebagai sampel kajian adalah mereka yang mempunyai pengalaman mengajar mata pelajaran Sejarah sekurang-kurangnya lapan tahun. Kaedah kualitatif digunakan dalam kajian untuk memperoleh maklumat terperinci tentang perlaksanaan penerapan nilai integriti melalui PdPc mata pelajaran Sejarah. Data kajian diperolehi hasil pencerapan PdPc mata pelajaran Sejarah, temubual dan dokumen SKPMG2 guru-guru Sejarah dan soalan terbuka penilaian murid dirujuk dalam triangulasi dapatan kajian. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan hasil daripada ketiga-tiga kaedah yang digunakan, murid-murid diberi pendedahan kandungan mata pelajaran Sejarah bersama nilai integriti. Ia diterapkan dalam pembelajaran dan pemudahcaraan mereka di sekolah. Murid-murid didapati mempunyai semangat yang tinggi untuk menyelami topik-topik dalam mata pelajaran Sejarah dengan kaedah yang berbeza. Murid-murid yakin strategi dan kaedah yang pelbagai dapat menarik dan meningkatkan minat mereka dan melahirkan suasana belajar yang dapat menanamkan nilai integriti dalam diri mereka. Kesimpulannya, walaupun guru-guru telah menerapkan nilai integriti, malah beberapa topik mata pelajaran Sejarah masih memerlukan penambahbaikan kandungan dan topik yang melibatkan ciri-ciri semangat cintakan tanahair. Keberhasilan murid yang berkualiti dapat dibentuk dengan penerapan nilai integriti melalui kaedah dan strategi pengajaran dan pembelajaran yang lebih berkesan
A cognitive-semantic comparative study of Chinese compounds in Malaysia and China / Zhang Xing
In global Huayu (Chinese), Malaysian Chinese (MC) and China Chinese (CC) are from two different regions. They have strong characteristics of commonality as well as marked differences in terms of meaning, word formation, and pronunciation. The most significant difference lies in their words, as it is a direct reflection of the two societies. In addition, the main form of Chinese words is compound words. Therefore, compound words constitute the main object of this study.
Cognitive linguistics can be used to explore the relationship that exists among our language, our mind, and our experience of the world. Cognitive semantics is a main area under cognitive linguistics, which investigates knowledge representation and meaning construction. This study compares Malaysian Chinese compounds (MCCs) with their corresponding China Chinese compounds (CCCs) to detect their similarities and differences from the perspective of cognitive semantics.
In this study, a total of 56 pairs of MCCs and CCCs (112 examples in total) were extracted from five sources amongst a collection of MC mini fictions. Based on Bloomfield’s (1933) classic semantic classification, all MCCs and CCCs were classified as endocentric compounds and exocentric compounds. Additionally, partially endocentric compounds were added as an intermediate type of compounds in the study.
According to the findings of the comparison, firstly, three types of compounds were found in both MCCs and CCCs, and endocentric compounds had the highest occurrence among the compounds of these two regions. However, the percentages of partially endocentric and exocentric compounds in MCCs were higher than in CCCs. This indicates that the meanings noted in MCCs are more implicit than the meanings in CCCs. Secondly, there were several commonalities and differences between each type of MCC and its corresponding CCC. In terms of characteristics, three similarities and three differences between MCCs and CCCs were found. In the partially endocentric group, two similarities and differences between MCCs and CCCs were found. Furthermore, in the exocentric group, there were two similarities and differences in the characteristics.
Finally, Fauconnier and Turner’s (2002) conceptual blending theory (CBT) was utilized to illustrate and analyze the partially endocentric and exocentric compounds, as their meanings are not fully explicit. The CBT illustrated how implicit conceptual meaning contributes to the construction of meaning in MCCs and CCCs.
The study will offer better insight for others to understand the disparity that exists between Chinese compounds in Malaysia and China, and to promote more effective interaction for these two Chinese communities
Development of alkyl triazole glycoside surfactants for water-in-oil emulsification / Ng Su-Han
Fuel-water emulsification is an approach to reduce toxic combustion byproducts from diesel and recycled fuels. Emulsion stability is crucial for commercial viability; hence the development of effective W/O surfactants is needed. In this work, alkyl triazole glycoside (ATG) surfactants were synthesized from renewable materials, namely sugar and fatty acids, and linked by Cu (I) catalysed azide alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC), a Click reaction. The modular reaction allows structural variations on both antipodes to tune the structure for better W/O stability. Parameters involve the variation of the linker between sugar and hydrophobic domain, branching of the hydrophobic domain via multiple click reactions or branched starting material, and the use of different sized sugar headgroups. Initial investigations on single chained ATGs indicated negligible effect of the linker length on O/W emulsion stability. However, in bistriazole ATGs, the symmetrically branched ATGs had significantly higher CMCs than their asymmetrical counterparts. This is thought to be caused by -stacking interactions. Bistriazole ATGs generally showed improved W/O emulsion stability but exhibited higher Krafft points and a tendency to complex Cu (II) ions. This was not observed for the oleic acid derived mono ATGs. These surfactants combined good W/O emulsion stability with lower Krafft points. Among the approaches, usage of naturally branched derivatives, such as oleic acid, and limiting the number of triazole rings produced ATG surfactants with good emulsion stability and less complications in synthesis and workup
