The Importance of Oral Health Education for Kindergarten Students in Rural Areas

    No full text
Oral health is essential for overall human well-being. Everyone, regardless of age—whether young or old—must maintain good dental hygiene, including kindergarten children in rural areas. Unfortunately, knowledge of oral health and tooth-brushing skills among kindergarten students in these regions remains inadequate. To improve their understanding of dental health and proper brushing techniques, effective educational methods are required. In response to this issue, a community service team implemented a multi-method approach targeting two groups: primary and secondary beneficiaries. The primary group consisted of kindergarten students, who were engaged through interactive counseling, demonstrations, question-and-answer sessions, singing, games, rewards, and practical tooth-brushing exercises. Meanwhile, for the secondary group—teachers and parents—the team utilized persuasive communication via WhatsApp messages, providing oral health education and encouraging parents to consistently remind their children to practice proper dental hygiene daily. Based on the program evaluation, the multi-method approach was proven effective in enhancing both the knowledge and skills of kindergarten children in maintaining oral health. Furthermore, it contributed to creating an environment that fosters healthy behavior among children. Therefore, the team believes that dental health practitioners and educators can adopt similar methods to achieve optimal outcomes in promoting oral health awareness

    No full text
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a global health problem that is also a public health challenge in Indonesia, and the prevalence of DM has increased significantly. A healthy lifestyle is currently being promoted to prevent diabetes and control the disease, both through food and exercise. One alternative food ingredient to replace rice and wheat flour with a low glycemic index is breadfruit. Breadfruit has a glycemic index of 23-60 compared with wheat, so it can control blood sugar levels. The purpose of this activity is to provide knowledge about diabetes mellitus and healthy eating patterns or diets and to be able to make food for DM sufferers. The target of this activity is the mothers of cadres from all sub-districts in Utan Kayu Utara Village. The method of implementing the activity is through direct education and showing several videos on how to process breadfruit flour. Participants consisted of 30 cadres. They asked a lot of questions and discussed the material given enthusiastically. There was an increase in cadre knowledge about DM from 51 to 76 points. They were able to utilize breadfruit flour as an alternative source of carbohydrate nutrition for DM patients because they can make various cakes and snacks with a low glycemic index

Reducing Women’s Cancer Rates: Early Detection of Breast Cancer and Cervical Cancer Through Self-Breast Exams (SADARI) and Pap Smears in Pinrang Regency, South Sulawesi

    No full text
Breast and cervical cancer constitute the two most prevalent cancer types globally, with a disproportionately high mortality rate among women. While cervical cancer ranks eighth in terms of incidence, it remains a significant public health concern. A common challenge is the community’s delay in seeking healthcare attributed to a dearth of information, consequently leading to delayed treatment. The Pinrang Regency Health Department and the Family Empowerment and Welfare Team (TP-PKK) of South Sulawesi identified a high incidence of breast and cervical cancer among women in the Pinrang region. A primary obstacle to addressing this issue is the absence of public awareness regarding breast and cervical cancer, including early warning signs, symptoms, and associated risks. This problem is compounded by the district’s lack of an anatomical pathology specialist, hindering public education efforts and diagnostic capabilities. The objective of this activity was to enhance awareness of early detection for these two gynecological cancers in order to reduce mortality and morbidity rates associated with cancer. The method comprised an educational session on breast and cervical cancer, practicing SADARI, attended by 145 participants, followed by Pap smear tests for 45 volunteers. Program effectiveness was evaluated through pretest and posttest. A Wilcoxon signed-rank test was conducted to compare pretest and posttest scores. The results revealed a highly significant increase in scores p = 0.000 (p<0.005), suggesting that the educational program was successful in improving participants’ knowledge. A significant proportion of participants (57.8%) reported undergoing a Pap smear for the first time, highlighting the need for enhanced awareness and knowledge-sharing efforts regarding early detection of cervical cancer. The Pinrang Regency Health Department and TP-PKK provided essential support and participation. The Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) funds this community service project. The project was executed under contract number 0031/UN.4.22/PM.01.01.2024

    No full text
Seasonal dry periods in Blora Regency routinely lead to drought conditions, which make it difficult for communities to secure clean water for daily use and for agricultural irrigation. This community service initiative aimed to deliver a rapid energy-based solution by implementing the Quick Response Energy (QREEN) system to support water distribution and environmental lighting in Ledok, Temengeng, and Joho Villages. The program followed a community based participatory approach with five stages, namely problem identification grounded in field data, technology solution design, site selection, implementation coordination, and program evaluation. Using a mixed methods design, data were collected through direct observation, semi structured interviews, and quantitative surveys administered to selected users. The results indicated high user satisfaction, including improved ease of access to clean water (79 to 85%) and time savings (75 to 83%), as well as increased farming yields (72 to 80%) among users who manage agricultural land. Overall, the findings suggest that QREEN implementation can strengthen local water security, although the magnitude of impact varies across contexts. Sustained, cross sector collaboration is recommended to support long term operation and enable program expansion

Infectious diseases such as lameness remain a persistent health problem for small ruminants in community farming systems. Although antimicrobials are frequently used as a treatment strategy, this practice contributes to increased medication use and raises concerns over antimicrobial resistance. This study assessed behavioral practices surrounding antimicrobial use among farmers at Ngudi Dadi, a community farm in Central Java, Indonesia, and implemented a multifaceted intervention combining farmer training and the construction of a biosecurity-focused footbath.Behavioral data were collected through structured survey with 21 farmers, covering five domains: antimicrobial administration, disposal of veterinary medicines, frequency of antimicrobial use, medication storage, and treatment of sick animals. Behavioral scores varied across categories, with consistently higher scores for treatment practices, but notable gaps in antimicrobial administration and disposal behaviors. Importantly, no significant correlation was observed between years of farming experience and behavioral practice scores (Spearman’s ρ = 0.0488, p = 0.8335), suggesting that practice gaps are widespread regardless of farming experience.Post-survey, a training session was conducted, followed by the construction of a footbath using lemongrass essential oil as a natural disinfectant. The footbath is now routinely used for incoming livestock at Ngudi Dadi Farm, serving as a biosecurity measure that supports reduced reliance on antimicrobials. This study represents the first initiative in Indonesia to integrate behavioral assessment, farmer education, and footbath implementation into a comprehensive antimicrobial stewardship strategy. Expansion of this model to other community farming settings, along with the development of standardized operating procedures, may enhance its scalability and long-term impact

Global waste generation continues to intensify environmental pollution and contribute to climate change, with municipal solid waste projected to increase substantially by 2050. In Indonesia, rapid urbanization has resulted in approximately eight million tons of waste produced daily in major cities, highlighting the urgent need for improved waste management systems and greater public awareness. In Banten Province – particularly in Sidamukti Village, a coastal area in Pandeglang Regency – these challenges are further exacerbated by insufficient waste management practices. To address these issues, Universitas Trisakti implemented a Community Service Program (PKM) in Sidamukti Village aimed at strengthening waste management practices and increasing community knowledge of health and hygiene. Program activities included health and hygiene (PHBS) awareness sessions, shell-craft training, eco-enzyme production, composting, and the establishment of a waste bank. The methods employed consisted of workshops, hands-on training, and community engagement activities. A paired-sample t-test was used to assess the effectiveness of the interventions. The results showed significant improvements in PHBS practices as well as in participants’ skills in crafting, eco-enzyme production, composting, and waste bank management. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of the PKM initiative in enhancing community-based waste management and promoting environmentally responsible practices

To minimize forestry sector greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, Indonesia needs stakeholder participation, especially youth. The AmericanIndonesian Scholarship Program Alumni Association (ALPHA-I) initiated the "Local Heroes for Forest Protection" program to include local adolescents in climate action. During 2023-2024, 149 direct participants from three provinces (Sulawesi Tenggara, Papua Barat, and Nusa Tenggara Timur) contributed to the conservation of approximately 12.5 hectares of forest, surpassing our target area, by planting indigenous trees and indirectly impacting around 4,500 individuals through both online and on-site campaigns. The program encompassed capacity-building training, sustainability seminars, field activities, and displays via a talk-show festival on climate change, which garnered favorable comments. Despite the SWOT analysis indicating that all three regions have analogous obstacles and opportunities in program implementation, they effectively formulated action plans for forthcoming activities. Our program is anticipated to persist for three years, broadening its effects to more regions while fostering partnerships with various local and national organizations

Dekso Tourism Village in Kulon Progo Regency, during its five-year period after establishment, faces difficulties to maintain and develop its tourism busines. Internal problems of the management become an obstacle to the development of the village so that it can compete with other tourism villages and has an economic impact on the community. The tourism village development program is one form of community-based development implementation. The active role of the community itself is very important in the management process. Therefore, this community service program was carried out to help solving the village’s problems through three stages of implementation methods, namely the process of awareness, capacitating, and enrichment. Improved governance was carried out by reorganizing the new management based on established criteria and referring to the collegial collective principle. Reorganization also includes strengthening institutional cooperation with BUMDes as the parent company, POKDARWIS and other organizations involved in the tourism village. In addition, in order to strengthen the tourism village governance, the formation of a village regulation (PerKal) on tourism villages is also part of this service program. This legal umbrella will encourage cooperation between related parties to be more systematic, protect tourism village activities, as well as be the guidelines for future tourism development in Banjararum
