    Human Face and Behavior Analysis

    Get PDF
Human face and behavior analysis are very important research topics in the field of computer vision and they have broad applications in our everyday life. For instance, face alignment, face aging, face expression analysis and action recognition have been well studied and applied for security and entertainment. With these face analyzing techniques (e.g., face aging), we could enhance the performance of cross-age face verification system which now has been used for banks and electronic devices to recognize their clients. With the help of action recognition system, we could better summarize the user uploaded videos or generate logs for surveillance videos. This could help us retrieve the videos more accurately and easily. The dictionary learning and neural networks are powerful machine learning models for these research tasks. Initially, we focus on the multi-view action recognition task. First, a class-wise dictionary is pre-trained which encourages the sparse representations of the between-class videos from different views to lie close by. Next, we integrate the classifiers and the dictionary learning model into a unified model to learn the dictionary and classifiers jointly. For face alignment, we frame the standard cascaded face alignment problem as a recurrent process by using a recurrent neural network. Importantly, by combining a convolutional neural network with a recurrent one we alleviate hand-crafted features to learn task-specific features. For human face aging task, it takes as input a single image and automatically outputs a series of aged faces. Since human face aging is a smooth progression, it is more appropriate to age the face by going through smooth transitional states. In this way, the intermediate aged faces between the age groups can be generated. Towards this target, we employ a recurrent neural network. The hidden units in the RFA are connected autoregressively allowing the framework to age the person by referring to the previous aged faces. For smile video generation, one person may smile in different ways (e.g., closing/opening the eyes or mouth). This is a one-to-many image-to-video generation problem, and we introduce a deep neural architecture named conditional multi-mode network (CMM-Net) to approach it. A multi-mode recurrent generator is trained to induce diversity and generate K different sequences of video frames

The Industry 4.0 challenge is to exploit the synergy of different technologies in order to achieve the results required by its specifications. This chapter presents: (a) the state of the art in Augmented Reality applied to industrial engineering and manufacturing machines, (b) insights on the implementation of optimal feed-rate interpolation for computer numerical control machine tools, (c) an application of knowledge-based techniques such as computer algebra systems in the implementation of solvers for optimal control problems, and (d) challenges in the application of artificial neural networks to the massive amount of unlabeled data available in the industrial practice. It is shown how these topics, wich may appear as distant one from each other, play a central and correlated role in the Industry 4.0

Production and excitation of cold Ps for anti-H formation by charge exchange: towards a gravitational measurement on antimatter

    Get PDF
The AEgIS experiment pursues the ambitious goal of measuring for the first time the gravitational pull on neutral antimatter. The envisioned method consists in producing a beam of cold anti-hydrogen and measuring the deflection of its free fall by means of a Moiré deflectometer. To do so the pulsed production of abundant cold anti-hydrogen is paramount, therefore the charge exchange production mechanism has been elected as the most promising candidate production method. Performing the charge exchange anti-hydrogen production requires access to an abundant source of cold positronium which can be achieved by the employment of oxide-coated nanochanneled silica plates (NCPs). We spend chapter 1 formulating a classical model of positronium production and thermalisation in NCPs and validating it by testing it against the available experimental data. In chapter 2 we describe the measurement of the energy spectrum of positronium produced by nanochanneled plates using the beam produced by the SURF machine. We then compare the measured energy spectra with the model proposed in chapter 1 showing, in the comparison, the indication of a transition during thermalisation process to a regime where quantum phenomena become significant. We describe in detail in chapter 3 several positronium spectroscopy measurements that we performed during the course of the last three years by employing the positron beam line of the experiment AEgIS. We will the proceed to illustrate an improved version of the detrending technique commonly employed in signal analysis which, applied to the analysis of SSPALS spectra, improves the achievable precision on the experimental results. In chapter 4 we describe an innovative approach that we are currently pursuing to employ the detector FACT, part of the AEgIS apparatus, to confirm the successful production of anti-hydrogen

    Get PDF

    Get PDF

Constructing multiple objects across space and time

For us to interact with our environment we must have an understanding of the location and properties of the objects within it over time. Incoming stimuli from different sensory modalities continuously provide information. In order to create a coherent percept, it is necessary to combine these sensory signals in the brain into a single representation of an object or event. Temporal integration, the process of combining information over time is one important prerequisite for it. Likewise, multisensory integration, the process of combining information from different sensory modalities to generate a coherent percept is of great importance. Furthermore, as our environment is not static but dynamic it is necessary to combine sensory information over time and space. Despite, the ever-increasing neuroscientific results, much about the underlying brain mechanisms remains unknown. This thesis describes an effort of understanding how sensory information are integrated in the brain and what effects attention has on how we integrate multiple objects in space and time. Chapter 1 introduces the reader to the existing literature on neural oscillations, specifically alpha band frequency, which is hypothesized to play a critical role in temporal processing and attention. This is followed by a review of the literature on temporal integration and the theoretical background of multisensory integration. The following chapters will report the three studies conducted: Chapter 2 describes the first study, a MEG study that investigates the role of alpha oscillations in temporal integration. Chapter 3 reports the second MEG study, which focuses the role of attention to modality in multisensory integration. Chapter 4 presents the third study, a behavioral oscillations study, which focuses on the role of neural oscillations in selective attention in a dynamic scene. Finally, Chapter 5 summarizes all the findings from this research

Decoding Auditory Motion Direction And Location In hMT+/V5 And Planum Temporale Of Sighted And Blind Individuals

The research presented in this thesis addresses the neural mechanisms of auditory motion processing and the impact of early visual deprivation on motion-responsive brain regions, by using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Visual motion, and in particular direction selectivity, is one of the most investigated aspects of mammalian brain function. In comparison, little is known about how the brain processes moving sounds. More precisely, we have a poor understanding of how the human brain codes for the direction of auditory motion and how this process differs from auditory sound-source localization. In the first study, we characterized the neural representations of auditory motion within the Planum Temporale (PT), and how motion direction and sound source location are represented within this auditory motion responsive region. We further explore if the distribution of orientation responsive neurons (topographic representations) within the PT shares similar organizational features to what is observed within the visual motion area MT/V5. The spatial representations would, therefore, be more systematic for axis of motion/space, rather than for within-axis direction/location. Despite the shared representations between auditory spatial conditions, we show that motion directions and sound source locations generate highly distinct patterns of activity. The second study focused on the impact of early visual deprivation on auditory motion processing. Studying visual deprivation-induced plasticity sheds light on how sensory experience alters the functional organization of motion processing areas, and exploits intrinsic computational bias implemented in cortical regions. In addition to enhanced auditory motion responses within the hMT+/V5, we demonstrate that this region maintains direction selectivity tuning, but enhances its modality preference to auditory input in case of early blindness. Crucially, the enhanced computational role of hMT+/V5 is followed by a reduced role of PT for processing both motion direction and sound source location. These results suggest that early blindness triggers interplay between visual and auditory motion areas, and their computational roles could be re-distributed for effective processing of auditory spatial tasks. Overall, our findings suggest (1) auditory motion-specific processing in the typically developed auditory cortex, and (2) interplay between cross- and intra-modal plasticity to compute auditory motion and space in early blind individuals

Event Detection and Classification for the Digital Humanities

    Get PDF
In recent years, event processing has become an active area of research in the Natural Language Processing community but resources and automatic systems developed so far have mainly addressed contemporary texts. However, the recognition and elaboration of events is a crucial step when dealing with historical texts: research in this domain can lead to the development of methodologies and tools that can assist historians in enhancing their work and can have an impact both in the fields of Natural Language Processing and Digital Humanities. Our work aims at shedding light on the complex concept of events adopting an interdisciplinary perspective. More specifically, theoretical and practical investigations are carried out on the specific topic of event detection and classification in historical texts by developing and releasing new annotation guidelines, new resources and new models for automatic annotation

Pedagogia interculturale: prassi e teorie.

The research focuses on intercultural action in kindergarten multicultural situations. More specifically, the process of practice and theory has been investigated and the relationship between these two elements that should contribute to the same goal of inclusion. The research question of the survey is: "How does unconsciousness influence the circularity of the process between theory and practice in intercultural environment in kindergartens?â The theories from which the research originates suggest a counterproposal to discriminating divisions. They are models of inclusion and of "informal and open cooperation", with the need to review the social visions that relate to colonial concepts, that is a review of archetypes of dominant and subordinate. A perspective that must also take into account the search for a balance between the universalist vision and the perspective that highlights diversity. The survey offers a view on the processes that contrast the realization of inclusion extending to the centrality of teachers' unconscious theories and suggests that the intercultural glance when supported by the pillars of philosophy and anthropology may be wider, particularly with the contribution that can come from psychology, especially social psychology, but not only. The underlying concept is that we can profoundly expand our vision through a number of psychological constructs and that their knowledge can be useful both for understanding the processes involved in inclusion and in planning training paths

    Get PDF
