Since the middle of 1980s, Indonesian arts show striking growth, due to the dynamic appearance of painting market which was often referred as the boom of paintings. This phenomenon is triggered by the change of social-political-economical conditions of Asia, which are also influencing the infrastructure and suprastructure changes of the social-politics-and economy of Indonesia. It leads to the dialectical rise of the class of economical elite in Indonesia, which is dominated by the Chinese ethnic group. This group, which was politically pressurized during New Order regime, has built a tantalous room in economy. Their involvement in the arts market can bee seen as the starting point to comprehend the economical-capitalism of Indonesian Arts. It is expected that by constructing the role of Chinese ethnic group in art market, we will obtain a complete understandings of the social history of arts in Indonesia

One approach to understand urban space is by observing daily activities in the public space. By identifying the complexity of events in everyday activities, we can understand how meaningful an urban space is. In order to optimize the use of public space, we can identify its use on 24 hours time-span when several actors participate in sharing roles, spaces, and time in conducting commercial activities. Results of observation indicate that hidden-order can be identified as structured activities by order while hidden-power as controlled activities by social agreement. Both components serve as important elements for "sustaining-life" in public space

The book of "The Introduction of Preventive Conservation on Painting for Visual Art Students" explains how to apply preventive conservation techniques for objects of culture and collections, especially paintings. It is said that preventive conservation optimizes environmental conditions to which objects and collections are housed.  By controlling light and ultraviolet radiation, humidity and temperature, biological pets, dust and pollutants, we can prevent damages and decays of the paintings.  In addition, preventive conservation also means in ensuring that good handling, transportation, storage and displaying techniques are used at all times.  Thus, applying preventive methods can prolong and protect the life of artworks for the future. Yet, although the Introduction of Preventive Conservation on Painting provides information on how to give care of paintings as objects of culture and collections, it is important to understand that all except the simplest conservation treatments should be taken by trained conservators. Thus, active conservation treatment is a response skill to the damaging process of cultural artifacts, a highly skilled field that requires extensive knowledge on the use of chemicals and rigorous technical procedures

Prehistoric relics, especially those of megalithic traditions, were found many in the plateau of Pasemah. From several types of megalithic artefacts, megalithic idols are the one that excessively found in Pasemah. Unfortunately, scientific information about these ancient artefacts in Pasemah is still scarcely to be found, especially in the form of visual data and reports. Based upon this notion, this research conducted a study to investigate, document and describes the existence, depiction, the object, expression style, symbol, and attribute of the megalithic idols of Pasemah; using the approach of ungkap rupa. The study discovers that the proponent society of megalithic culture in Pasemah had used and applied bronze. They had good ability in chiseling idols from big stones of andesit, formed it in sharp corners and created accurate forms. The depicted idols show that its form has a dynamic pictorial postures and shapes, although some are also made in the style of realistic expression. The idols are formed in a leaning forwards posture, its head or face tilted upward, and its feet usually visualized in the bended forms, depicting austronesoid man and animals complete with its attribute and symbols. Further, the study indicates that these megalithic idols were representations of symbolic-mystical beliefs of a Pasemah's society which were based on cosmology of the past. Accordingly, these idols were inseparable parts of Pasemah's ancestor veneration rituals. The distinctiveness of these idols is found in their dynamics"”both in pictorial and realistic depiction"” that seem to be the masterpiece of megalithic idols of Pasemah at that time. The idols visualize the complete body part of austronesoid man and/or animals (head, body, foot/feet, and hand), which indicates that the megalithic idols of Pasemah represents a mystical culture of a society that whorshiped the spirit of their ancestors, live as an agrarist society of farmer (peladang) system, and encourages the patriotic characteristic of man

The shadow effect of leather puppet’s movements on the screen can be used to determine performance quality of the puppet and the creativity of a puppeteer. The most important tools to perform the shadows effect are blencong (traditional lamps), kelir (screen) and debog (banana tree trunk). Therefore, many of the terminologies used in this study refers to terminologies used in the puppet performance of Javanese customs, particularly Yogyakarta’s style, which originates from the School of puppet play performance of Habirandha in Yogyakarta - Indonesia. The study observed detailed ‘movement’ of Purwa in Yogyakarta’s style, as each detailed movement possesses its own story that determines the plays and body language of character in the leather puppet performance. To observe facial expression of puppet characters, the study uses the 11th sequence and 70 facial expressions (gambar) of movement in the Kedhaton Dwarawati acts. The study observes that in each “space” and “time” of plays there are stories of movement, which can be used to describe the visual language of shadow leather-puppet performance

This study looks to understand more on the possibility of improving the quality of housing environment based on community initiative that sustain residents' effort to accommodate changes of their surroundings, by observing housing-environment at jalan Gagak "“ Bandung as an area for case study. The analysis focuses on: (1) the socio-capital of community involvement, stating condition of internal organized efforts in addressing needs of the community, and (2) the roles of external parties, stating the involvement of external actors both of government and privates. For the study, the authors conducted focus-group discussions on group of residents at RW 18 and RW 19 Kelurahan Sadang Serang, Kecamatan Coblong "“ Bandung, as well as interviewing local leaders. Results of observation indicate that residents possess interests and self-trust to develop their environment and willing to provide supplies for it. They have tendency to set preferences on what orderly environment should look like including rejecting ideas of apartment-like housing as it is feared to create "slum"-ness and "inappropriateness" fire-emergency access. As residents put concern on the facts that there are no shared-values among them in addressing problems of space and inactivity of local leaders, resulting in the market-driven changes of spatial development that intervening the needs of public. Thus, it is necessary to decentralize the process of organizing public space, starts from government's unit to community's initiative. This requires strict guidelines that are fair to follow by allowing neutral parties to involve. In addition, there should be internal mechanism to build community's initiative through "musrenbang" as a way to initiate community based development. Having the results, the authors urge future studies on different cases of community and places, to understand the dynamics of development negotiation between interested stakeholders, whether they are formal and/or informal parties.

The Kraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat has been the center for the development of ideas, traditions, and cultural artifacts, giving it a unique status among Indonesia diverse cultures. Understanding the richness of Yogya's inherited artifacts, this research tried to investigate the existing styles of furniture in the Keraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat during 1755 to 1988. The span period was chosen because during that time the Keraton endured several cultural transformations, from the period where Hindu-Buddha was very much influential to the era of colonialism. Sources for this research were gained through direct observation, interview and documentation, amplifying descriptive qualitative method using historical approach for analysis. The study indicates that there exist visual data, left by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono VIth to IXth, in form of symbolic mean that could be seen on the furniture (ornaments) in the Keraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat. It shows that the most frequent used ornaments are geometric shape, flora-fauna, and imaginary creatures. The ornaments are usually placed at the top, center and lower parts of the furniture. Aside to fulfill aesthetical decoration, those ornaments, which also have symbolic mean, are used as a medium to express the social norms of the Kraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat

One of the alternative media, which is potential to be developed is the use of natural fiber materials from the environment (indigenous material). This natural fiber in foreign country such as Thailand, Japan, United States has crossed the threshold of the quality as a work of art that create by an artist. Meanwhile in Indonesia it is still brand new to be develop as a media of art expression. Indeed, art paper has already developed in Indonesia, but it is still a boundary production of pieces of paper that will be directly applied as a handicraft media. Moreover, the preparation process is still using the conventional method using chemical materials such as NaOH, Hypochloride, Boric acid, Chlorin, H2O2, etc., which burden the environment. Therefore an alternative, environmental friendly process is necessary to be developed to exploit natural fiber materials as a media of art expression. For this reason in this project a research on fiber-pulping process using xylanase enzyme has been carried out. The use of xylanase is enable to decrease chlorin consumption and reduce  chloro-organic concentration in pulp and waste, that also means a reduction in  production cost. The pulp was then used to make a paper to be tested for its quality by the Center for Pulp and Paper (Balai Besar Pulp dan Kertas, BBPK). This research resulted in a) enzyme formulations for the fiber-pulping and preparation from variety of fiber materials: banana's stalk, the abacca, hyacinth, straw, pineapple fiber and gold cocoon, b) data of paper quality, and c) work of arts from fiber/pulp material. In conclusion, enzyme can be applied in fiber-pulping process for lower impact on the environment and the workers
