The existence of Islamic political parties in the field of Indonesian politics has a very long history. The Islamic political parties had actually been found before the independence. Their quantitatively significant development, however, takes place after the era of independence. Throughout the development, there have been many researches on the existence of Indonesian political parties. Among those researches, however, it seems that there has never been a research carried out by employing visual sources such as symbols of political parties. These symbols are often neglected. They are as if something which cannot be explored and tend to be merely a complement for a political party. In fact without any symbols, it is impossible for a political party to follow election. Therefore, a symbol plays a very important role since it is not only to show the identity of a political party but also to fulfill the provisions of legislation. For the above reasons I am interested in carrying out this research. In relation to that, the research employs both political and cultural approaches in order to produce interesting findings about political parties’ symbols. Based on the study upon the symbols of Islamic political parties participating in 1955 – 2004 elections, it is found that the visualization of the symbols undergoes an incredibly dynamic development in both element and sense of form. There are several factors which cause the coming out of visual dynamics on political parties’ symbols such as the experience of national history, cultures built up in the society, and the improvement of design technology. The dynamics of the element of form shows a visual reality that the moon and the star, which are usually regarded as the representation of Islamic political parties, are not always used by Islamic political parties and they are not only used by them as their symbols as well. Furthermore, the dynamics of the sense of form also show interesting finding that the star as the element of form does not constantly produce the same sense of form

The study discusses the design of Iket Sunda as it is related to the life of Sundanese people and their associated culture. Iket is a type of traditional head-attire of Sunda, in which through its use we may grasp the function and status of those who wears it. Unfortunately, the use of traditional iket Sunda is no longer common and no one seems to wear it in daily basis. Yet, iket Sunda carries more than just fashion, as it also represent distinct identity amongst diverse ethnic cultures of Indonesia. This study exposes the knowledge behind iket Sunda, from the embedded aesthetic values, the associated behavior of the people who wears it, and its inter-related historical background. To address the purpose, this study applied qualitative approach based on cultural transformation theory, in order to understand the undergone changes that may relate to the design of iket-Sunda.  Results indicate that iket Sunda is not completely washed out of use in today's living, as a small group of Sundanese societies in Bandung and Sumedang still wear it on a daily basis. However, some Sundanese people only wear it as part of complete traditional attire in certain events, including dance costumes and other performance activities, therefore most are not aware of the various styles of iket-Sunda. Study found that through times, iket Sunda has undergone changes on the shape, use of clothes, size, decorations, colors, and way of wearing. As rare as it may be, iket Sunda represents the true identity of Sundanese people and their associated culture

The word café originated from coffee, which is commonly used to describe a place where one drinks coffee, i.e. coffeehouse. Generally, this place is not too large in space providing drinks and snacks, as well as accommodates other activities for use either in the morning or late afternoon. This habit of coffee-drinking is carried out by societies in various countries around the world, including in Indonesia. This research explores cafés that embed to the local context of Bandung as case studies. This is due to the increase number of cafés in Bandung during the early 2000s which demostrate conditions that are unique and perhaps unfounded in other places of Indonesia. There are 5 (five) design variables that illustrate the diversity of cafés in Bandung: (1) Scale (café dimensions), (2) Class (low, medium, high economic-level), (3) Type (internet-café, bookstore-café, music-café, gallery-café etc), (4) Location (part of a commercial area, in one’s front yard, along the street, within a public open space), as well as (5) Time (morning, afternoon, late afternoon, evening, or more than one period of time). It is found that cafés in Bandung have developed beyond the boundaries of their origin and denotative meanings. Their existences have become part of the everyday life of the society, it serves not only as a place to chat and spend free time during late afternoons, but also as transactional-spaces that accommodate diverse activities. Referring to Barbara Kirschenblatt-Gimblett [1] this situation illustrates the phenomenon of urban vernacularism that is marked by the following characteristics: sporadic, self produced, absence of author and creator identity, as well as free from any formal pressure

Defense and security are serious business, as they represent the integrity and dignity of a nation. It is understandable to assess military power and facilities as crucial to a nation's defense, shown in the use of fighter airplanes. A fighter airplane serves as a window to represent nation's values, philosophy and ideology; appeared through its design form and defense ability. The presented paper explores and compares 2 (two) types of fighter airplane, F-16 of US and SU-27 of Russia, in order to observe and characterize their design forms. Having acknowledged the characteristic of their design forms as tangible aspect of analysis, it is identified that this characteristic can be split into form design and numerical design. Comparative assessment of both fighter airplanes indicates that F-16 fighter airplane of US appears smaller than the SU-27 of Russia. The smaller size of F-16 form was meant to have superior maneuver-ability for air-to-air combat, while the size of SU-27 was meant to accommodate multi-tasking aspects of fighter airplane (air-to-air combat and interceptive act). As results, both airplane forms express different views and ideological perspectives. The F-16 of US shows great and superior ability to carry special task of becoming combat airplane (thrive to perfection), coming with a hefty price and catered for great quality.  On the other hand, SU-27 of Russia shows a wider purpose and not necessarily has superior ability in order to carry diverse tasks of an airplane (multi-tasking), coming with a cheaper price and catered in a great quantity.  Thus, it can be deduced that the American designer of fighter airplane tends to acknowledge specialization of military purpose compare to the Russian's generalization of military purpose

The earthware figurines of Majapahit  were clay-based artworks from the Majapahit Kingdom (1350-1389 AD) of Trowulan at Mojokerto, East Java. The name "majapahit" itself refers to the known great kingdom that unite "nusantara" (covering Malay peninsula, Sumatra, Java, Bali, Borneo, Celebes, up North to the Southern of Phillipine). Having exposed to the varieties and high-quality of earthware figurines of Majapahit from the Trowulan site, the study looks into their symbolic shapes and meanings which was known to be heavily influenced by Hinduism. To address this issue, the study applied qualitative-descriptive method by means of visual analysis. Study on clay-objects' shapes was carried out to explore the associated meanings of 4 (four) figurine groups: (1) male figurines, (2) female figurines, (3) child figurines, and (4) deformed-face figurines. Results indicate that shapes of the object cater their symbols and associated meanings to the way religion and/or beliefs were held. Figure of gods, kings, and the nobles were made to manifest values (truth, heroism, devotion, and loyalty). Yet, although Hinduism was the most associated values to appear on the objects, Budhism were also identified. This shows that earthware figurines of Majapahit were product of acculturation where different values are met, explored, and exposed to appease the spirits (dharma) through ritual and performance.
