Pengalaman, Usability, dan Antarmuka Grafis: Sebuah Penelusuran Teoritis
Experience is a significant matter for human beings. Man obtains as well as constructs the meaning of life through his very own experience. By investigating human experience, one can become fully aware of humanity, the world, and the mutual relationship between both entities. On the other hand, experience in relation to existence can also be investigated in a wider context. In the context of usability, investigation of experience can make a significant contribution, for example, when determining the effectiveness and efficiency of a system and/or a product of technology. This paper discusses human experience and then correlates it to the concept of usability. It includes observation of several graphical user interfaces that serve as a medium between people and a product or a system. The expected result is an understanding of experience that will complement the existing concept of usability
I Draw Therefore I Am: Drawing as Visual (Communication) Studies
This paper sets view to consider the significance of drawings as part of visual communication design. Drawing gives a chance to observe, to muse, to select and develop continuous thinking techniques. It is to present that drawing is not just a cursory to generate ideas, but it has its own energy and philosophy which deserve studying as a domain of art. In recent years, drawing has received attention; there is on the one hand a group of drawing practitioners, and on the other hand a group of drawing researchers. Drawing in design is a medium of visual and spatial thinking. Digging into research actually is a necessity for visual communication studies. It is suggested here three kinds of research approaches: research into art/design; research through art/design; and research for art/design. Indeed, it leads to four axis topics (topoi) for design studies: design practice, design product, design discourse, and design meta-discourse. A field of study called 'visual culture' which, departed from the study of critical theory and cultural studies which have set out relatively new field of study called 'visual studies'. Based upon to this perspective, visual (communication) studies should be more self-reflexive. The production of visual communication contributes to construct the visual culture in society

Relasi Penerapan Elemen Interior Healing Environment Pada Ruang Rawat Inap dalam Mereduksi Stress Psikis Pasien (Studi Kasus: RSUD. Kanjuruhan, Kabupaten Malang)
The pleasing atmosphere of medical environment is a friendly atmosphere so it can accelerate the adaptation process of patients. However, the medical environment is very often identical with fear, anxiety, and uncertainty that can suppress the immune system so that patients require longer treatment time and even hasten the complications during treatment occur. This study is conducted to analyze how to optimize the application of healing environment interior elements (such: circulation, lighting, color, interior supporting elements: natural elements, the position of social interaction and television) inside the treatment room directly affect the patients psychologically. The research is at Kanjuruhan public hospital which has simple and candid interior physical condition. The results demonstrates that the elements of nature and natural lighting are potential to reduce patient stress, given the daily conditions of people who tend to be close to nature. The Local Genius Typography as a Source of Idea for Latin-based Typeface Design in Visual Communication Today
During its long history, slowly but sure, Indonesia had accepted the influence of the written language from various nation and civilization. Approximately in the 15th century AD, European brought their language system, Latin, to Indonesia, which had been developed until present time. The usage of Latin alphabet for daily communication in Indonesia has created a disadvantage for the local/ethnic language, especially since the Latin provided an easier writing and speaking system. Latin uses alphabet system in which one sound represents one letter: A, B, C, etc. In contrast, the ethnic language uses syllable system in which one sound could consist of more than one letter (a, ba, ta, ka, nga, kha, etc). The growing of the nation of Indonesia with its various ethnic groups created the need for unification language, a language with a universal system. Furthermore, the alphabet system is easier to be used for various written and spoken language in the world. The richness of ethnic alphabet from Indonesia could become infinite ideas in developing computer typefaces. A typographer could design Latin alphabet with the characteristic of ethnic alphabets by capturing the traditional elements from the letters. These findings could enrich the field of visual communication nowadays.
Eksperimen Pengembangan Produk Fungsional Bernilai Komersial Berbahan Baku Tempurung Kelapa Berusia Muda dengan Teknik Pelunakan
Coconut shell, as coconut processing leftover, comes with unique characteristics, such as its strength, hardness, bending flexibility and also special texture of the surface. Those unique potentials and characteristics enable coconut shell to be used as craft materials. The objectives of this research are to find out the shell processing alternative technique and to know more about young age coconut shell's characteristics. The method used for this research is the material experiments and coconut shell as the craft materials, experiment of coconut shell utilization using generally known techniques, surface coloring technique, softening technique, reform technique with the help of base substance and experiment that refer to the unique characteristics of coconut shell. According to the evaluation, it is concluded that coconut shell utilization using softening technique resulted in products that show less visual character and least natural compared to other techniques. Product that came out as the result with softening technique is still considered as the most suitable product which goes along with the contemporary style and owns the greatest unique value. It brings consideration that the softening technique- product has a great potential to be developed as other craft products. In addition, coconut shell used in softening technique is the young age shell which has not been used widely.
