Identifying the Meaning of Colors as Design Information for Design Tools: A Systematic Literature Review
The meaning of colors has been widely researched in various disciplines. In design, understanding the contextual meaning of color influences design decisions and, hence, is important design information. This research aimed to compile information about the meaning of colors that can be used as design information in design tools so that users can choose the right color palette. This research used a qualitative approach by conducting a contextual document review of reference books about color. Data collection was carried out by identifying relevant data regarding the meaning of colors. The data collected included color association, positive-negative meanings, and cultural links. Although the information derived from these three sources varied in terms of information themes, we could observe some consistent meanings shared by the sources. This research output can be implemented as design information in design tools such as web-based color palette generation applications, graphic design tools and others. It is hoped that the results of this research can provide comprehensive guidance in choosing an appropriate color palette based on the meaning of the colors contained
Nature Inspired Fashion: The Design of Patterned Fabrics Inspired by the Ylang-Ylang (Cananga odorata) Flower with the Application of Fragrance Microencapsulation using Biomimicry
Innovation in fragrance textiles reflects growing awareness of health, well-being, and aesthetic value. Nature has long served as a source of inspiration for designers and researchers, offering guidance for product innovation. Scents and fragrances are known to contribute positively to human well-being, and advances in textile technology have enabled the application of fragrance finishes through microencapsulation techniques. While visual appearance and fabric durability remain primary considerations for consumers, floral patterns—among the oldest and most favored textile design elements—continue to play an important role. This research employs mixed qualitative and quantitative methods to develop specialized textile products in the form of flower-patterned fabrics inspired by traditional Indonesian flora, specifically ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata). The study applies a biomimicry approach by using the ylang-ylang flower as both a visual and olfactory reference in textile design. Pattern development was combined with fragrance incorporation using a microencapsulation technique with PEG 6000 as the encapsulating agent. The resulting textile features a ylang-ylang floral pattern and releases a distinctive scent resembling the natural flower in bloom. This approach demonstrates the potential of integrating visual and sensory elements in textile design and supports future development of fragrance textile products to enhance consumer engagement

Visual-based Acculturation in Balinese Wayang for the Characters of Jesus and Mary
Beauty plays a vital role in persuasive communication, encompassing values such as goodness, usefulness, splendor, comfort, novelty, and metaphorical strength. This study aimed to reinterpret figures of Jesus and Mary through visual language of Balinese wayang, integrating traditional Balinese cultural values. Western visual portrayals often dominate depictions of these Biblical figures, making them appear generic and less engaging to contemporary audiences. Using a qualitative method, with Bishop Robert Barron’s research synthesis of Aristotle, Aquinas, and Balthasar aesthetic, which emphasizes evangelization through beauty. The concept of beauty is explored and expanded toward goodness and truth. Visual designs were developed through literature on Christian philosophy and interviews with Balinese dalang, artisans, Christian writers, and Catholic priests. The study faced challenges in balancing theological reverence with cultural adaptation, which were addressed through contextual design exploration. The outcome is a new form of visual metaphor of Jesus and Mary in Balinese wayang style that reflects both spiritual depth and local aesthetic sensibility, offering a fresh model of religious visual acculturation.Beauty plays a vital role in persuasive communication, encompassing values such as goodness, usefulness, splendor, comfort, novelty, and metaphorical strength. Living with the Past in the Present – Korean Furniture and Home Décor Design at the Milan Design Week
This article traces the historical outline of the development of design in South Korea. Foreign policies promoting Korean design will be discussed as evidence of the importance of K-design exports and to introduce the collaboration between Italian and Korean designers at Salone del Mobile. In 2023, the Korean government’s direct participation in Milan Design Week marked the 11th year of the Korea Craft and Design Foundation’s (KCDF) participation in the Italian international fair. Each year, the foundation curates an exhibition showcasing Korean furniture and home décor which exemplify the fusion of traditional Korean craftsmanship and contemporary design sensibilities. Notably, for the 60th anniversary of the Salone del Mobile in 2022, KCDF planned a special exhibition bridging Italian and Korean design cultures. This initiative facilitated a direct collaboration between Italian designer Francesco Faccin and Korean artisan Hur Sung-Ja, resulting in the realization of three projects. These projects serve as a benchmark for the reimagining and internationalization of traditional Korean crafts, epitomizing the concept idea of K-crafts. This article innovatively investigates the topic of Korean traditional crafts, highlighting the Korean government’s domestic policies aimed at promoting internationalization. Such policies seek to enhance Korean influence globally and strategically shape the future of K-Crafts
Factual Analysis of Factors Influencing Consumer Cognitive Thinking and Automobile Designing using Fuzzy-AHP
Consumer cognitive and emotional responses significantly impact consumers’ affinity for both tangible and intangible products. Recent research underscores the heightened influence of consumer emotional and cognitive perceptions in product design, surpassing reliance on designers’ instincts or experiences. This case study delved into the analysis of automobiles, using cars as focal product. While visual elements like curve lines, grill design, and color predominantly shape consumer perspectives, non-visual factors such as reliability, quality, and ergonomics play a pivotal role in purchasing decisions. Our investigation, involving six industrial experts and over 130 participants, explored non-visual factors affecting consumers’ cognitive perceptions during car purchasing. Through a two-phase experimental approach, we developed a framework to understand the disparities in ranking assigned by consumers and designers to these non-visual factors, revealing perception gaps. Utilizing the rank value methodology, the Pareto principle, and Fuzzy-AHP analysis, we identified mileage/fuel efficiency, safety features, and reliability as dominant factors influencing consumer perceptions. Designers, on the other hand, prioritize safety features, reliability, and quality/warranty. Our findings emphasize the strategic significance for automobile companies to enhance their success rates by prioritizing these key factors, ultimately elevating brand value, profile, and overall financial prosperity
Japanese and Western Influences on the Local Animation Character Design Identity in Malaysia
Identity is regulated by culture and can be delivered meaningfully in numerous expressions, among which animated designs. In tandem with technological evolution, animation today shows fusions of various cultures. Two main influences in the Malaysian animation industry are Japan and Western countries due to their status as pioneers in animation. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the influence of Malaysian, Japanese and Western animated character designs on the local university students’ production of their character designs. This study was conducted based on semiotic theory, followed by a research method that employed a content analysis approach using the SPSS software. Through the analysis of cross-distribution and Chi-Square, it was found that the criteria of physique, national characteristics, and colors in the students’ work showed similar characteristics to both local and foreign animations. Consequently, further studies should be conducted to comprehend why the students are inspired by Japanese and Western styles. These influences also raise the question of whether these cross-cultural forms lead to a new identity of Malaysian animation or only a trend
Sebuah Penelitian Tentang Pan-Sensualisme Sebagai Bentuk Silang Budaya: Karya Seni Oleh Jim Supangkat; Ken Dedes (1975)
This study examined the use of the term ‘Pan-Sensualism’ in the discourse on contemporary Indonesian new art and how this manifested itself in artworks created at the beginning of the Indonesian New Order era (1966-1998). Jim Supangkat was one of the artists and initiators in forming the artist group Gerakan Seni Rupa Baru Indonesia (Indonesian New Art Movement), which then organized the first Seni Rupa Baru 75 exhibition in 1975. Jim Supangkat presented six installation works with different narratives, but Ken Dedes was the only one that presented the dialectic of traditional and modern culture. The Prajnaparamita, or Ken Dedes statue is presented with a drawing of the body of a woman wearing jeans with the buttons open. In looking at the formal, social-historical, cultural, feministic, and other elements in the work of Ken Dedes (1975-1996), we used the iconographic research method. This method helps to see several aspects of Supangkat’s visual works related to the aesthetic paradigm of Pan-Sensualism and the intersection of two cultural elements, i.e., high and low art, which may be distinguished based on social class appreciation.
Crafting the Future: A Sustainable Practice of Endek Woven Cloth in Jinengdalem Village, Buleleng District, Bali Province, Indonesia
While Endek cloth weaving Bali is a long-standing tradition for Balinese people, there is currently an urgency to achieve sustainability. The concern of addressing environmental aspects makes traditional clothing more relevant to the present and future. This paper aims to connect Balinese Endek weaving with natural dyes to preserve the tradition and adapt it to today’s needs. Implementing a participatory approach and collaborating with Poni Songket, the weaver’s community and SME in the Buleleng district of Bali province, this research developed state-of-the-art innovative designs for Balinese Endek weaving by utilizing local potentials such as traditional architecture (paddy and paddy barns) as inspiration for the designs and local natural dyes from the surrounding area for colorization of the fabric. These practices will open advanced opportunities to enhance the community’s economic perspective and expand their knowledge to support sustainable purposes of Indonesia Emas 2045 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN
Reviewing Co-creation Method in the Context of Visual Arts Co-creation: A Case Study of Usungan Parade Project
In this paper, co-creation through visual art as a form of community engagement is explored and discussed through its definition, origin, method, practice, context, and potential. The Usungan Parade co-creation project at a khatam al-Quran event in Kabong, Sarawak, East Malaysia served as a case study through a qualitative analysis to explore the experiences and interpretations of the community related to the co-creation phenomenon. The study was conducted through participant observation and interviews with a sample drawn from heads of families, usungan craftsmen, and audience members. Six factors were identified in this community engagement project using the co-creation model. Then we elaborated how the participants interpreted the value of co-creation obtained from their activities. The objective was to build a strong argument for an in-depth study of implementing co-creation in a particular community. This research found that co-creation can contribute to reducing the gaps between those who can produce art and society, especially through the participation of ‘non-art affiliated’ communities and artistic excellence
