    Ultrafast response of tunnel injected quantum dot based semiconductor optical amplifiers in the 1300 nm range

    The ultrafast gain and refractive index dynamics of tunnel injected quantum dot based semiconductor optical amplifiers in the 1300 nm range are investigated using a heterodyne pump probe technique. In the gain regime, ground state wavelengths exhibit full gain recovery in less than 10 ps up to 3 times transparency, attributed to enhanced carrier refilling via the injector layer. The effect of the injector can also been seen in unusual phase dynamics at excited state wavelengths at this injection level

    Towards Developing a Research Roadmap for Service Innovation in Ireland

    The systematic development, design and testing of new and/or improved service offerings, processes and business models, i.e. service innovation, represents a timely and relevant growth area transcending European and Irish innovation and socio-economic recovery strategies. However, research into the development and practice of service innovation vis-àvis product innovation, is a relatively emerging domain and is at best characterised as emerging and fragmented. The existing body of research knowledge is derived largely from product innovation and fails to provide concrete processes by which to embed service innovation at the firm-level. Hindered by a lack of integrative theoretical and supportive framework models, success rates for service innovation are low and there is a lack of tailored instruments and tools for planning, designing and developing service innovations which has significant implications in terms of industry awareness, deployment and impact. Additionally, it has been well documented that innovation policy and supports have not been well attuned to service innovation, particularly as current framework mechanisms are predominantly biased towards technological and product innovation. Reflective of this, The European Expert Panel on Service Innovation has recently identified that the key underlying challenge facing Europe is the development of a coherent policy framework that enables and supports the transformative and horizontal cross-cutting economic potential of service innovation. Therefore, to underpin Ireland’s emerging service innovation agenda, informed research is required to address the underlying challenges that exist at policy, research and industry levels. Through a combination of desk research and semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders within Ireland’s innovation ecosystem, a range of challenges and action points relating to Ireland’s engagement and potential to exploit service innovation at policy, practice, research and education levels are surfaced. Moreover, the study subsequently proffers a responsive research roadmap, informed by EU best practice,as a starting point to stimulate further research developments within the field. Accordingly, the research impacts and has implications at various stakeholder levels, most notably in terms of informing policy development through evidence based research, prioritising applied and academic research gaps and challenges and also signals the need to prioritise industry awareness and practice of the discipline

    Air-tightness field data for dwellings in Ireland

    Air-tightness plays a major role in both building energy performance and indoor environmental quality. Ireland’s National Methodology for the calculation of energy performance of buildings, the Building Energy Rating (BER) includes air permeability characteristics. From an international perspective, many air permeability surveys have been carried out. However, there is a paucity of knowledge relating to the existing housing stock in Ireland. This paper reports the air permeability test results of 28 houses built between 1944 to 2008 and at varying stages of retrofit. The results are compared to past studies and compliance with the existing standards. The effect of construction type, age, design details and retrofitting on air permeability is examined. While statistically small the dwellings are broadly representative of the many that will be retrofitted over the coming years. This paper addresses the lack of practical research in air-tightness for new and retrofitted dwellings in Ireland. The results challenge the perception that newer dwellings are more airtight than older dwellings. The paper highlights design detailing, workmanship and building control deficits for the studied dwellings. The paper concludes that good design combined with high-quality workmanship, and rigorous control throughout construction is critical to ensure the delivery of a good product. The results can be complied with future research to establish a database for Ireland. The study will contribute to future research and facilitate building professionals to make informed decisions about how to achieve air-tightness standards in dwellings

In many occupations, the play element simply provides an antidote to the tedium of the work proper and allows the worker to return to the task refreshed and re-energised, but in some professions play is an intrinsic aspect of carrying out the work itself to the highest standards. Since I am addressing an audience of scholars and academics here today, I shall take the work of the academic as an example of this

    The thesis cites the identification of significant, contemporary, compositional techniques and their use as lateral drivers in developing new creativity. The process involves the preliminary definition of a position of contributory perspective and thus, of a standpoint and outlook which guides the subsequent re-interpretations, transformations, fusions and manipulations of the selected techniques. The consequent explorations, shaped by new developments, current context, practical insights and fusions of disparate influences, results in the production of results, which, by their very nature, contain new elements of contemporary creativity. The procedure, of informed, academically referenced research, supported by practical experience and a re-evaluation of certain performance conventions, when expressed within an innovative response, promotes the inclusion of such techniques as components of further creative advancement. It also provides renewed insight and increased functionality of the original methodologies. Each of the ensuing, accompanying compositions seeks to demonstrate, reinvigorate and extend such creative development across a range of genres and instrumental ensembles. The work produced is therefore subject to practical referencing, re-envisioned methodologies, creative applications, experimental fusions, pragmatic design and innovative combination. The propositions advanced are addressed primarily within the accompanying portfolio of compositions, (Vol. 2), with supporting analyses and further relevant data contained within the enclosed commentaries

    The effect and influence of gatekeepers on technology transfer in Institutes of Technology in Ireland

    The purpose of this study is to examine whether gatekeepers influence technology transfer within the Higher Education Institute (HEI) sector. It is important to note that the higher education sector in Ireland is known as a binary system of education in that it consists of both universities and Institutes of Technology (IoTs). Both sectors are treated differently in funding allocation and research and innovation. This study chose to research the IoT sector as the majority of literature surrounding technology transfer is written and commented on from a university perspective. A phenomenologist philosophy was employed using qualitative methods. Rice and Matthews (1993) and Duff (1994) stated that incubation centres, within an industry context, were the hub of technology transfer with incubator managers being gatekeepers of the technology transfer process. Therefore, it is not unreasonable to expect that campus incubation centres and their managers located in the 14 IoTs in Ireland would also be hubs of technology transfer. A sample was obtained of the 15 IoT campus incubation centres using a number of selection criteria. Data were collected for this study through semi-structured interviews with six incubation centre managers. The managers revealed that they did not consider themselves to be gatekeepers of technology transfer but instead identified 23 individuals who they believed were gatekeepers of technology transfer in the IoTs. The semi-structured interviews enabled the researcher to establish information regarding the gatekeepers’ education qualifications, industry experience, network contacts and whether the skills gained had an influence on technology transfer within the IoTs. Based on the interviews with the gatekeepers the researcher decided to interview ten key government officials in various government funding agencies in Ireland as it became apparent that there were some issues regarding the Irish government’s methods of allocating funding to HEIs. A number of important findings emerged from this study. The research identified that individuals identified as gatekeepers in IoTs possessed all the capacities of organisational gatekeepers described by Allen (1977). Furthermore, the research findings confirmed that technology transfer is not just a step-by-step process running from invention disclosures to wealth. In fact, this research has found that the technology transfer process starts with gatekeepers gathering and disseminating knowledge and sharing this knowledge with the academic community. They in turn motivate and inspire academic faculty to file invention disclosures and engage in the technology transfer process. It was also discovered that gatekeepers believed that without their presence in the IoT, technology transfer would not occur. The gatekeepers also believed that the skills gained as a result of their previous experience influenced the technology transfer process. However, from the research findings it emerged that skills gained during their education actually provided gatekeepers with more knowledge transfer capacities than they acknowledged. As mentioned previously Ireland possesses a binary education system consisting of seven universities and 14 IoTs. The university sector is traditionally more successful at obtaining research funding then IoTs. As a result of this, the research found that the allocation of funding by government funding agencies has caused dissatisfaction amongst the IoT sector in particular, towards the metrics used by Enterprise Ireland (EI) to measure technology transfer in HEIs. The gatekeepers believed the funding they received from EI was not adequate and that they were treated differently to universities regarding the level of support received for technology transfer. This research will add to the expanding body of literature on technology ii transfer as it was established that technology transfer required knowledge to be transferred in order to be effective and that knowledge transfer required the existence of individuals to disseminate knowledge in order to be effective. Finally, this study examined of the impact of policies enforced by government funding employees on gatekeepers’ ability to encourage technology transfer in IoTs. Therefore, this study has implications for researchers, policy makers, higher education authorities, government funding agencies in Ireland and individuals engaged in technology transfer

    This report is from a conference in August 2012 hosted by Wexford County Council in conjunction with Waterford Institute of Technology and Ireland Newfoundland Connections. It summarises the presentations made at the conference and provides a synopsis of the propsals made by attendees with view to rendering more effective partnerships within and for the Region. It also examined some comparative dimensions with respect to Newfoundland and Labrador, a province in Canada with which the South east of Ireland has strong social and cultural connections. The conference drew on economic and institutional aspects of such partnerships and sought to identify pathways which could enhance the impact of such partnerships prospectively
