Pervasiveness in Converged Telecommunications: A Business Opportunity for the Operators

    Get PDF
Mobility has become a central part of the lives of European citizens. Rapid technological development in the areas of mobility and telecommunications has resulted in not only a bewildering technology picture, but also uncertainties regarding business models and the roles that different businesses can play within this new picture. In this paper we take the concept of pervasive and ubiquitous services as a starting point and outline a new value network, where Service and Network Aggregators cooperate with multiple content / service providers and access network operators respectively. In this new value network, we evaluate the opportunities for telecom operators and we investigate some novel business models with varying degrees of changes and adaptation required to the current market and business roles for telecom operators. Finally we discuss a service framework that provides a flexible and precise basis for the analysis of the above roles and business models

In this paper we present a flexible architecture providing a communication platform between heterogeneous components for inter-domain QoS and traffic analysis in large-scale, multi-domain Internet infrastructures

A service-centric model for intrusion detection in next-generation networks

    Get PDF
In this paper we argue for a new service-centric model for developing and implementing intrusion detection systems. This new approach is influenced by the convergence of computer networking and telecommunications systems, and ways that the telecoms industry manages issues of fraud. Interoperability of intrusion detection components with the rest of the system, in particular logging and billing subsystems, requires standardisation of usage data representation formats and development of a standard ontology for intrusion detection. Personalised, Context-aware Composition of Pervasive Mobile Services

This paper discusses some of the challenges encountered when using policy-based management to manage pervasive m-Government services. Users within a pervasive computing environment can take advantage of pervasive m-Government services if management of these services is developed and integrated into the environment's management system. The mobility of the user is a key feature of pervasive computing environments. Adapting the management system to account for user's mobility is a challenging and highly active research area. Application of policy based management techniques appears to have the potential to successfully manage the provision of services across multiple management domains, however this potential will only be realised if solutions to a number of challenging research issues are realised. In particular, current policy based management techniques do not fully support user or service mobility across management domains. Thus we argue that research into specific areas, including dynamic policy refinement, dynamic policy conflict detection and resolution, policy interoperability among domains, and inter-domain policy negotiation, must be carried ou

Modeling the timing considerations of an automotive-based time-triggered system

    No full text
This report has two main objectives, firstly to provide a brief understanding of the currently available time-triggered networks that exist in industry today. This is achieved in section one of this report by introducing a description of each of the main network types. The second objective is to investigate the timing models of a time-triggered network. This is done by producing a static model of the timing considerations of a network, which will then be simulated. The timing model and simulations are dealt with in section two

Towards a Privacy Framework for Information Systems Development

    Get PDF
Privacy issues are an increasing concern in our society (Pedersen, 1999). As information and communications technology (ICT) becomes increasingly pervasive, these concerns are being intensified. Privacy is a fundamental human right (UN, 1948) that continues to be violated by intrusive and unethical applications of technology in society and the workplace (cf. Baase, 2003). However, in spite of the ethical concerns and the pivotal role ICT plays in gathering and processing information on people, privacy remains a misunderstood and undervalued concept in ISD. Although literature addresses many ethical issues associated with intrusive technologies, privacy has received very little attention from ISD researchers, with mainstream literature treating privacy as analogous to data security. Palen and Dourish (2003) note that social and design studies of technology often unknowingly conflate the many functions of privacy and consequently fail to provide sufficient analytical treatment. Current ISD approaches are failing to recognise the significance of privacy ..

ADDRESSING TACIT KNOWLEDGE IN ISD METHODOLOGIES

    Get PDF
This paper identifies a gap in ISD methodologies regarding the exclusion of tacit user requirements in the development of information systems (IS). It recognises that this will lead to IS failure, since given that tacit requirements are not considered or incorporated, these systems will not address these types of requirements. In the mid 90’s Clegg et al (1997) argued that 80-90% of IT investments do not adhere to the performance objectives of the user. They identified a number reason for systems failure, one of them being the poor articulation of user requirements. Tacit knowledge is inarticulable (Wong & Radcliffe, 2000) and subjective (Baumard, 1999). Therefore requirements that result from tacit knowledge use are omitted from consideration in current ISD processes. This paper identifies three characteristics and five acquisition dimensions of tacit knowledge that have a significant impact upon the ISD process. Four well-known ISD methodologies are then critiqued in relation to these. This leads to a revised perspective on current ISD methodologies, which challenges the traditional view regarding the development of systems

Soil bacterial and fungal community structure across a range of unimproved and semi-improved upland grasslands.

    No full text
Changes in soil microbial community structure due to improvement are often attributed to concurrent shifts in floristic community composition. The bacterial and fungal communities of unimproved and semi-improved (as determined by floristic classification) grassland soils were studied at five upland sites on similar geological substrata using both broad-scale (microbial activity and fungal biomass) and molecular [terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (TRFLP), automated ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis (ARISA)] approaches. It was hypothesized that microbial community structure would be similar in soils from the same grassland type, and that grassland vegetation classifications could thus be used as predictors of microbial community structure. Microbial community measurements varied widely according to both site and grassland type, and trends in the effect of grassland improvement differed between sites. These results were consistent with those from similar studies, and indicated that floristic community composition was not a stable predictor of microbial community structure across sites. This may indicate a lack of correlation between grassland plant composition and soil microbial community structure, or that differences in soil chemistry between sites had larger impacts on soil microbial populations than plant-related effects
