Mechatronics Education and International Stability: The Development of University-Level Education Programmes in Advanced Engineering in Kosovo
Emerging economies in the midst of fundamental restructuring of higher education can benefit from radical approaches to engineering education programme design. The authors present the case of the development of a Mechatronics Management curriculum in one of the new international universities in Kosovo in order to demonstrate that it is possible to develop higher-education programmes in advanced engineering, which have local economic context in an emerging economy. The authors illustrate how it is possible to use theories of engineering and technology professional competence to develop a coherent higher education programme which has the potential to deliver on aggressive economic and educational objectives
Consumer Motivations to Participate in Marketing-Events: The Role of Predispositional Involvemement
Confronted with the decreasing effectiveness of classic marketing communications, event-marketing has become an increasingly popular alternative for marketers in dealing with a changing marketing environment. Event-marketing is defined as the creation of 3-dimensional, interactive brand-related hyperrealities for consumers by staging marketing-events, which would result in an emotional attachment to the brand. However, as a pull strategy within marketing communications, successful event-marketing strategies require a thorough understanding of why consumers are motivated to voluntarily participate in those marketing-events. To narrow this information gap, this research, based on a thorough literature review, has developed a conceptual model suggesting that consumers’ motivations to participate in marketing-events are determined by their predispositional involvement either in the event-object, the event-content, event-marketing or the expected social interaction at the event. Hospital Governance: An Insight from the South East of Ireland
Recently the governance debate has moved from the private to the public sector. Growing concerns in health care systems have propelled governance to the forefront of the agenda of policy makers and managers alike. This study examines the concept of governance in a hospital setting and questions the drivers of this phenomena in both its internal and external environments. A similar approach was adopted in a Belgian study by Eeckloo et al 2002

New product development (NPD) is increasingly being viewed as a dynamic interplay between two or more actors. The basic tenet of this relationship is that linkages with other actors help firms create value by combining
resources, sharing knowledge, increasing speed to market, reducing risk and in general creating a competitive advantage that is likely to be sustainable. Despite the increasing importance attributed to the involvement of external actors such as users and suppliers in NPD, little is known about current practice in the Irish context. Based on empirical evidence collected from 572 Irish manufacturers, external cooperation remains latent and relatively unused as a mechanism for Irish firms to
develop new products. Implications of these findings for managers and researchers are discussed
Applying the P2P paradigm to management of large-scale distributed networks using a Model Driven Approach
This paper details an application of model-driven development undertaken within the Celtic initiative project Madeira. The objective of Madeira is to apply model-driven approaches to investigate large-scale distribution techniques in network management. So far, the project has concentrated on building a prototype system using the peer-to-peer (P2P) paradigm. For this one of the major challenges was to provide a model supporting P2P characteristics, such as 1) selforganisation, 2) symmetric communication and 3) distributed control and domain specific concepts for distribution and management as can be found in telecommunications. Our modelling approach had to consider the views of the different participants, such as equipment vendor (Ericsson and Siemens), network operator (BT) and service provider (BT, Telefonica). To minimise the complexity of the model, we have focused on fault and configuration management in a dynamically forming network of transient elements. This paper will explain the complexity of the networks we consider and of the management tasks we have to cover. This can be briefly characterized by comprising a multitude of different, sometimes proprietary, technologies and diverse business models. We will motivate the application of new paradigms, in our case the P2P paradigm, to simplify management for seamless service provision to customers. Based on this, we will provide a case study of how we applied a model-driven approach to capture the complexity of the task and the complexity of the management activities, which ultimately led towards the specification of management information and behaviour of network nodes. The methodology we use is presented in the form of a ‘vertical slice’, where a logical portion of the project, of limited scope and functionality, is brought from the meta-level right through to the development stage, covering all modelling and architectural work as well as the underlying platform aspects
On integer-sequence-based constructions of generalized Pascal triangles, J. Integer Sequences
We introduce an integer sequence based construction of invertible centrally symmetric number triangles, which generalize Pascal's triangle. We characterize the row sums and central coe±cients of these triangles, and examine other properties. Links to the Narayana numbers are explored. Use is made of the Riordan group to elucidate properties of a special one-parameter subfamily. An alternative exponential approach to constructing generalized Pascal triangles is briefy explored
Daidalos: A Platform for Facilitating Pervasive Services
Daidalos is an EU 6th framework programme Integrated research Project
with 46 partners coming from the academic, research and industrial sectors. It is
focused on the integration of various fixed and mobile communication technologies
such as Ethernet, WLAN, TD-CDMA and DVB-T, and the creation of a pervasive
services framework which leverages the underlying communications infrastructure
for the deployment of innovative multimedia services for consumption by both businesses
and personal users.
The framework embodies technologies and research work drawn from several different
areas to address the requirements of pervasive services : security and privacy,
accounting and charging, location and context awareness, personalisation, rules and
event management, dynamic service discovery and (re)composition. This allows the
creation of services which are aware of and capable of learning personal preferences,
are aware of where the user is and what he or she is doing and are capable of
changing their form and makeup to reflect changes. The accompanying video illustrates
an example scenario where several such pervasive services interact with the
user and his environment to help him with his daily tasks in a helpful and unintrusive
manner

Imagine that you are watching a soccer match on your mobile phone or handheld device, while sitting on the bus. As you enter your living room, the match automatically jumps from the handheld to your forty-inch HD TV. You sit back to enjoy the rest of the match in comfort. Then the handheld signals an incoming call. You accept that call. The match is paused and the call goes into video calling mode on the big screen. When you hang up, you are given the choice to continue watching the game where it paused or to pick up the live feed. Using your handheld device, you can select the live feed
