    Low-field susceptibility of classical Heisenberg chains with arbitrary and different nearest-neighbour exchange

    Interest in molecular magnets continues to grow, o®ering a link between the atomic and nanoscale properties. The classical Heisenberg model has been effective in modelling exchange interactions in such systems. In this, the magnetization and susceptibility are calculated through the partition function, where the Hamiltonian contains both Zeeman and exchange energy. For an ensemble of N spins, this requires integrals in 2N dimensions. For two, three and four spin nearest neighbour chains these integrals reduce to sums of known functions. For the case of the three and four spin chains, the sums are equivalent to results of Joyce. Expanding these sums, the effect of the exchange on the linear susceptibility appears as Langevin functions with exchange term arguments. These expressions are generalised here to describe an N spin nearest neighbour chain, where the exchange between each pair of nearest neighbours is different and arbitrary. For a common exchange constant, this reduces to the result of Fisher. The high temperature expansion of the Langevin functions for the different exchange constants, leads to agreement with the appropriate high temperature quantum formula of Schmidt et al., when the spin number is large. Simulations are presented for open linear chains of three, four and five spins with up to four different exchange constants, illustrating how the exchange constants can be retrieved successfully

    The use of baited hair traps and genetic analysis to determine the presence of Pine marten

    The pine marten (Martes martes) is one of Ireland’s most elusive mammals. Between July 2003 and July 2005, hair tubes attached to trees with adhesive patches inside, were used to detect presence of marten in Portlaw Woods, County Waterford. Screening tests of potential lures to assess attractiveness and suitability were carried out on a variety of substances on free-living and captive pine marten. The use of chicken as a short-term lure was successful in attracting pine marten to the hair tubes. Peanut butter and marmalade scored highly as potential long-term lures. There was an increase in the number of visits to the hair tubes, which may mean that pine marten ‘learn’ where the hair tubes were. Samples retrieved were DNA species-typed to verify presence /absence of target animals and DNA sex-typed for gender distribution. A strong gender bias in favour of males was discovered. Findings have implications for field studies and how data is gathered for such studies while also important for conservation population management schemes

    CAN to FlexRay Migration Framework

    Abstract—As FlexRay is implemented in production vehicles (e.g. BMW X5 and 7 series) there is a growing interest within the automotive industry in optimising its utilisation. FlexRay is expected to become the standard network for backbone communications, replacing CAN in this area. However the complexity and cost associated with migrating from existing CAN based systems and designs to FlexRay can prove to be a barrier in its widespread adoption. One of the biggest problems in optimising a FlexRay cycle is formalising the static segment and dynamic segment parameters. This paper describes a migration framework for the complete migration from an existing CAN based application to FlexRay based network. This migration framework defines the static (ST) segment size by using basic CAN parameters and performing task graph analysis. The resulting payload is defined before a final ST frame size is obtained. The dynamic (DYN) segment size is verified by determining the worst case response time of tasks operating in this segment. A sample adaptive cruise control (ACC) application is implemented to verify the framework

    Modern automotive electrical and electronic systems are rapidly growing in complexity. An increase in the number of systems under electronic control has led to a corresponding increase in the complexity of the deployed software. AUTOSAR has been developed as a means of managing this complexity through a standardised architecture which separates an application from its infrastructure. Reusable software components constitute the application logic of an AUTOSAR-based system. However a major problem which faces AUTOSAR and component-based software engineering in general is the difficulty in selecting components which fulfil the system requirements. This thesis presents a framework which allows requirements to be mapped directly to software components. It includes the results from a study which was carried out in conjunction with automotive and software engineering experts to test the framework

    Bishop Pococke's Improvements to St. Canice's Cathedral, Kilkenny

    Born in Southampton in 1704 into a church family, Richard Pococke was educated at his grandfather’s school in Highclere rectory and matriculated at (or entered) Corpus Christi College, Oxford in 1720, aged only fifteen. He received a BA in 1725, a BCL in 1731 and a DCL (Doctor of Laws) in 1733. (4) While Precentor of Lismore Cathedral in 1725, aged only twenty-one (an appointment made by his somewhat unpopular uncle Thomas Milles, Bishop of Waterford and Lismore,) (5) his interests appeared to be concerned less with the church than with travel. It seems that the sinecure to which he was promoted required him to be present very little in Ireland, if at all. Several years later, together with his much younger cousin Jeremiah Milles, Pococke made his first Grand Tour to Italy. This is documented through a series of letters to his mother (6) outlining his six-month tour of the country from December 1733 to June, 1734 and is summarized in A Dictionary of British and Irish Travellers in Italy, 1701-1800. (7). In May, 1736, Dr Pococke (now having been promoted to Vicar-General of Waterford and Lismore) set out on a second, more extensive journey, this time alone. Travelling for a year through Germany and Eastern Europe, he spent a further year in Italy, where he befriended the Irishman Robert Wood, who was to become famous some years later for his two influential books on Palmyra and Baalbec. (8) His departure from Leghorn in September, 1738, took him on an extensive tour of the east, where he visited Alexandria, Cairo and Jerusalem over a period of three years, a voyage inspiring his famous travel book on the Levant, in two volumes, discussed below. His trip was almost contemporaneous with one made by another Irishman, William Ponsonby (Viscount Duncannon and future 2nd Earl of Bessborough), and his travelling companion Lord Sandwich, (9) and it is possible, though undocumented, that they may have met at some stage along the way. They certainly shared the same passion for knowledge about the east, for antiquities and for Turkish dress, all three commissioning portraits in such costume by the artist Jean-Etienne Liotard; and they were all, on their return, to become founder members of two London dining clubs devoted to promoting an interest in the east. Pococke returned to England in 1742 and in the February was elected Fellow of the Royal Society on the grounds of being “a Gentleman of Universal Learning, great Curiosity, every way well quallified and likely to be a very usefull and valuable member of the Same”. (10) He worked on his first volume of A Description of the East and Some other Countries: Observations on Egypt, which was published the following year and , interestingly, for the present study, he dedicated this volume to Henry Herbert, 9th Earl of Pembroke and Montgomery, commonly known as the “architect earl”. In his Dedication, Pococke immediately declared the objective of his book in his statement: “My Lord, As the magnificent buildings of Egypt, and antient architecture are the chief subject of this book, it could not be more properly addressed than to Your Lordship.’ (11) In the Preface to this volume, he draws attention to the illustrations in the book, noting: ‘The publisher of these observations [Pococke himself] had it only in his thoughts, to give the world the plans he had taken of the Egyptian buildings, together with some drawings of them, and to add an account, and designs of all the different orders of Egyptian architecture. He imagined even plans alone, with proper descriptions, not so defective as they might be with regard to other buildings….’ He continues: ‘What he has done will, he hopes, give a sufficient idea of the Egyptian manner of building; and if he had gone no further, it would have been very little more than publishing these plates; and it is but a little more at present, by the persuasion of some friends, to give an account of his travels, and of several accidents, that might give an insight into the customs and manners of people so different from our own, in order to render the work more acceptable to the generality of readers.’ (12) Volume II incorporates two parts. The first is entitled Observations on Palestine or the Holy Land, Syria, Mesopotamia, Cyprus and Candia, and the second is Observations on the Islands of the Archipelago, Asia Minor, Thrace, Greece, and some otherParts of Europe. Published in 1745, this volume and was dedicated to Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield, then Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, to whom Pococke was Domestic Chaplain. The dedication was rewarded by his appointment the same year to the Archdeaconry of Dublin, a position he retained until promoted to the Bishopric of Ossory, in 1756. This volume of his travels continues in an architectural vein, bringing to a total 178 magnificent plates, the most impressive of which are possibly the ten plans and elevations of temples and ‘apartments’ in Baalbeck (Pococke’s Plates X-XX). As was the custom with contemporary travel writers, Pococke frequently included in his illustrations a picture of himself, usually recognisable among the two or three figures present by being depicted either as taking measurements of the buildings, or engaged in drawing them

    Adding Discovery to Scholarly Search: Enhancing Institutional Repositories with OpenID and Connotea

    By linking Connotea to institutional repositories through the use of open standards the value of the data on the repositories can be enriched by social data from the service. Conversely, registered users from linked repositories acquire automatic membership of Connotea, boosting the quantity and quality of Connotea’s member base with quality membership, I.E. academic authors. This integration would provide the basis for a new ‘discovery and evaluation’ layer to be added to institutional repositories globally. In this scenario, repositories register with Connotea as trusted providers of Identity (Using OpenID). Aims *Encourage growth of Connotea’s data by making it easy for users of Repositories (like EPrints) to join/use Connotea through an implementation of OpenID. *Host JavaScripts on Connotea.org that can insert social data directly into record pages in repositories. Objectives *Provide for ‘discovery’ and evaluation of information on top of regular search. *Increase the amount of quality data in the Connotea database (in support of the previous objective) Success Indicators *New members of Connotea begin to join through OpenID *Web visitor statistics begin to indicate new usage patterns suggesting they are ‘discovering’ information thanks to the use of social data

    This work is a contemplative collection of histories surrounding the course of sugar in the human story. Though the selection for focus on particular episodes of history has been primarily subjective I have tried to keep a geographically balanced and even chronological composition paralleling the direction of sugar as a product, influence and catalyst of global culture and economics. I acknowledge and appreciate record of the refinement of sugar in Early China and the Far East however chose to involve them into the flow of the manuscript as part of an Old World/New World dynamic later in the timeline. The collection of poems arranges those poems relevant to sugar with others written during the course of the MA program

    Total automation of an industrial in-line quality measurement system

    This thesis summarises the design, development and installation of an automatic industrial in-line quality measuring and control system. The research project was initiated by a company manufacturing metallic balls for ball bearing assembly. The diameter tolerance of the components produced determines the value of the product and the market in which the company trades. Currently this company supplies the medium value market (automotive) and is striving to break into the higher value market (white goods). To do this, two aspects of the production system need be enhanced: 1. The frequency at which the product is sampled and 2. The level of precision measurement carried out during production. The project caters to both issues with the development of a closed-loop automated measurement system with machine control feedback. The overall objective of this project is to develop a prototype for a two-machine sampling operation and conduct tests and experiments to access the justification for company investment in an automatic sampling and measurement system. The thesis details the design and development of a component retrieval and transfer system, a component management system to normalize ball temperatures and feed the measurement device, an SPC based machine control system and the associated communication network. The design and proving of concepts, in a laboratory, is outlined. The building of the prototype, at the manufacturing plant, is described in detail; as is the rigorous testing and development of the prototype. Finally, the outcomes from this phase of the project are discussed and assessed and recommendations are made regarding the future development of the system
