Performance investigation of protective clothing against low-pressure steam and molten aluminium
62-69This study evaluates the performance of inherent flame-retardant (FR) fabrics under low-pressure steam exposure and characterises their response to hot surfaces, convective and radiant heat, and molten aluminium—one of the most common industrial hazards in India. The investigation compares FR-treated cotton, 100% para-aramid fabric (325 g/m²), and Savesplash® fabric (550 g/m²), a blend of FR viscose, para-aramid, and high-shrink PVC fibre. The fabrics are coated with neoprene on one side using the knife roller coating method. Results indicate that Savesplash® outperforms 100% para-aramid fabric in convective, radiant and contact heat resistance due to its higher thickness and weight. In the case of molten aluminium, both fabrics demonstrate superior performance when the molten aluminium is poured onto the coated side. However, under low-pressure steam conditions of 3 bar at 120⁰C, 100% para-aramid exhibits better resistance than Savesplash®. Further research is required to assess aluminised fabrics under higher temperatures, increased steam pressure, and varied molten metal exposures

Gamosa: Unique symbol of Assamese culture

Tracking the emergence and usage of farmer led innovations (FLIs) in maize ecosystem: A pan India exploration
177-184The study was carried out, by using case study method, to investigate the distinctive characteristics of a few selected farmer-led innovations (FLIs) in maize cropping systems created at the grassroots level across India. A total of five maize-based innovations produced at the grassroots level in various parts of India were purposefully chosen. The originality of these innovations is that they are based on the culture from which they originate and are based on local expertise. This study discovered that all farmer-led innovations generated by farmers were more useful than other existing options since these innovations were built with farmers' needs in mind. Furthermore, these were discovered to be and determined to be sustainable, owing to the fact that these inventions were produced using local resources and wisdom. All five innovations were discovered to be less expensive than alternative market-available technologies. The majority of selected technologies were determined to be profitable, with farmers benefiting after a specified period of hard labor and investment. All of the chosen technologies were discovered to be compatible with the needs of local farmers. The ideas generated by respondents were not commercialized due to several difficulties faced by the farmers to translate the innovations into marketable items, combined with the low demonstrability of these technologies
Evaluation of Tagetes Erecta (Marigold) Extract (MaQxan™ (20:2)) potency in induced learning and memory deficit by modulating neurotransmission and synaptic plasticity
355-362The ancient Indian medical system, Ayurveda, has identified numerous plants with antioxidant properties as beneficial for treating neurological diseases. The active ingredients in herbal plants are utilized to modulate synaptic plasticity and neurodegenerative disorders. Different strategies are used to treat neuronal diseases and their secondary consequences by modifying synaptic plasticity. Because herbal remedies are inexpensive and have fewer adverse effects, they are advantageous. The main strategies for achieving this were to study the phases of in vivo Tagetes Erecta (Marigold) Extract (MaQxanTM (20:2) administration in rats and, secondly, to study the potency of gene expression alteration on BDNF, TrkB, CREB, CAMKII, NMDA-R, nAChR, mGluR, and MAPK genes in the hippocampus. This study demonstrated that Tagetes Erecta (Marigold) Extract (MaQxanTM (20:2) at medium and high doses (10 mg/kg to 20 mg/kg) modulated the genes for BDNF, TrKB, CAMKII, NMDA-R, nAChR, mGluR, and MAP-K, showing neurotransmitter and synaptic plasticity control efficacy in animal models. Our study advances knowledge of the effects of Tagetes erecta (Marigold) extract (MaQxanTM (20:2)) on the central nervous system. Our results reveal that MaQxanTM (20:2) significantly enhances memory retention and synaptic plasticity while maintaining neuronal integrity. Hence, the synaptic plasticity improvement shown by MaQxanTM (20:2) can be attributed to the expression of plasticity-related proteins within the hippocampus, indicating its potential as a novel intervention for enhancing neurotransmission and cognitive function. These findings suggest that MaQxanTM (20:2) may serve as an effective therapeutic strategy for improving synaptic plasticity and alleviating depression and stress-related cognitive deficits
Compact High Gain and Bandwidth Enhanced RFID Reader Antenna for Handheld Applications
152-160A compact UHF RFID reader antenna, designed for handheld applications, has been proposed to meet the requirements
for high gain and wide bandwidth. The designed antenna exhibits linear polarization and delivers a maximum gain of 6.46
dBi along with a radiation efficiency of more than 90%. Furthermore, it achieves a maximum front-to-back ratio (FBR) of
19.75 dB and a 10 dB impedance bandwidth of 13.77 % spanning 125 MHz (from 845 to 970 MHz), thus covering the entire
UHF RFID band (860 – 960) MHz making it suitable for various real-world applications such as in logistics, inventory
management, asset tracking, healthcare and supply chain management. Notably, the antenna's compact profile, measuring
(100×100×1.6) mm³ or equivalently 0.3λ×0.3λ×0.004λ relative to the center frequency of the operational band (907 MHz),
facilitates seamless integration within handheld readers. A prototype of the design is fabricated on an FR4 substrate and its
performance is experimentally verified
Mapping Knowledge Diffusion: A Network Analysis
50-60This diffusion of knowledge through co-authorship, organizational collaboration and country collaboration networks from 2004 to 2023 has been studied in this paper. Utilizing a dataset of 1,349 documents from 830 sources, the research investigates the structure and dynamics of knowledge dissemination. Key metrics such as total link strength, citation counts, and co-authorship patterns are used to identify influential authors, organizations and countries. Thematic focus and trends are explored through author and index keyword analyses, while citation relationships among various entities are examined to map the intellectual structure and collaborative interactions within the field. The results highlight significant contributors like Yi Bu, Ying Ding and Wei Lu in the co-authorship network, with the United States, the United Kingdom, and China leading in international collaborations. The study also identifies prevalent themes such as knowledge diffusion and innovation and emphasizes influential sources like Scientometrics and Journal of Informetrics. Through bibliographic coupling and co-citation analysis, the research uncovers emerging areas and potential interdisciplinary intersections, enhancing the understanding of global knowledge flow. This comprehensive network analysis highlights the crucial role of knowledge diffusion efforts in fostering research, education and informed decision-making within society
Oxyphyllacinol reprograms red cell lifespan through calcium and p38 MAPK/CK1α signaling axis
221-228The medicinal value of Alpinia oxyphylla is attributed to numerous compounds with varied pharmacological activities.
However, no reports on oxyphyllacinol (OPC), a major antitumor diarylheptanoid in the plant′s capsular fruit, have been
published to date. Since anemia is a common complication of chemotherapy, this work examines the hemolytic and eryptotic
properties of OPC in human red blood cells (RBCs). RBCs were exposed to 10-100 μM of OPC for 24 h at 37oC and
photometric assays were used to measure hemolytic markers whereas eryptosis was detected by flow cytometry using Annexin-
V-FITC, Fluo4/AM, and H2DCFDA to quantify phosphatidylserine (PS) translocation, intracellular Ca2+, and oxidative stress,
respectively. OPC caused significant hemolysis at 100 μM with elevations in lactate dehydrogenase and aspartate transaminase.
Also, OPC significantly increased Annexin-V-FITC and Fluo4 but not DCF fluorescence. Importantly, OPC-induced hemolysis
was significantly inhibited by PEG 8000, SB203580, and D4476. OPC depleted hemoglobin content in whole blood and
increased mean corpuscular volume, fragmented RBCs, immature granulocytes, and large platelets. Altogether, this work shows
that OPC stimulates hemolysis and eryptosis in human RBCs which may be ameliorated by blocking p38 MAPK or casein
kinase 1α. These novel findings necessitate further safety assessment of OPC as an anticancer agent
Existing Knowledge, Skilled Person and Inventive Step under Indian Patent Law and the Problem of Borrowings
138-150Assessment of inventive step is difficult, with several tests being laid down for the same in different jurisdictions.
However, borrowing such tests, e.g. the Windsurfing test, the TSM test, or the concept ofPHOSITA from U.S. Law, into
Indian jurisprudence must be done with caution. As we argue here, Indian Law has certain peculiarities- (i) it requires
something more than a mere difference from prior art; it requires technical advance compared to existing knowledge, and
(ii) the person judging such technical advance for existence of obviousness is not ordinary, not average nor super-skilled but
a capable skilled person. Any interpretation or borrowing which loses sight of this statutory requirements can result in
interpreting the skilled person as less capable than what the Indian Act/ legislature expected it to be. This can result in
lowering the inventive step standard. This can have repercussions on the quality of granted patents, since it is the quality of
innovation and not merely the quantum thereof which ought to matter
